Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History Notes for Eighth Grade Causes of the Revolution. The chief causes of the Revolution were the Navigation Acts, the Stamp Act, the unjust taxation without representation, the Boston Massacre and the Declaration of Independence. 1. Navigation Acts. England wanted to make money out of her colonies. Various Navigation Acts were passed by Parliament. The Navigation Acts of 1663 forbade the colonies to import 01* export goods in anything but British or colonial vessels, to send goods to any other country than England, or to import goods from any other country than England. To prevent smuggling, Writs of Assistance were passed, allowing the customs officers to enter any person's house to search for smuggled goods. This angered the colonists greatly. The Navigation Acts ruined New England commerce and aroused their hatred of England. 2. French and Indian War Taxes. England had spent enormous sums to expel the French from America, and they expected the colonists to aid in paying the expenses of the French and Indian War. The colonists objected to any such taxation, as they had already given troops and money freely in that war. 3. Taxation without Representation. The outline is based upon the idea that pupils in history should be led to feel and participate in the life of the people they are studying, - feel the problems of daily living which confronted them and strive to solve them. Like all outlines, it must be filled in with material drawn from books, pictures, maps, stories, poems, and other illustrative material, in order to be made effective. It is simply a skeleton; the teacher and pupil must clothe it with flesh, and breathe into it the pulsating life of history. To aid toward this end, in addition to the history of which this book is an outline, a list of books has been suggested at the close of the outline of work for each grade. In making these lists care has been taken to give teachers such information as will enable them easily to judge something of the nature and fitness of each book for their particular needs. The purpose Of history teaching in these grades is to awaken interest, encourage supplementary reading, and present worthy ideals; it is not to prepare for any kind Of examination. As the same characters will be presented in chronologic sequence in the seventh and eighth grades, no time in the fifth and sixth grades should be spent in general reviews. Textbooks written from the biographic point Of View may be used very sparingly in the fifth grade, _ more profitably in sixth, but the zgreat value Of the work for these years will depend on the teacher's power Of story-telling.
