Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Amalgamated Ladies' Garment Cutters' Union, Local 10, Affiliated With the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union When the writer was approached last March by Officials of Local 10 and asked if he would consider writing a his tory of the union he hesitated. The volume was to be ready for delivery to the members by December 12. At the ute most this gave but eight months for research, interviewing members, digesting convention proceedings, consulting min utes of the union, pawing over files of Justice and the Ladies' Garment Cutter, reading numerous undated broadsides, leaflets, manifestos and other material. All this would have been formidable enough if the author could have given his full time to it, but this was not the case. Editing a weekly publication, he could give only his spare time each day to the book - Sundays and holidays more fully. Only an in tense interest in American economic history induced him to accept the assignment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Master of Seventh Avenue is the definitive biography of David Dubinsky, one of the most controversial and influential labor leaders in 20th-century America. A “character” in the truest sense of the word, Robert D. Parmet reveals that Dubinsky was both revered and reviled, but never dull, conformist, or bound by convention. A Jewish labor radical, Dubinsky became president of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) in 1932 and went on to lead it for thirty-four years. Dubinsky famously championed “social unionism,” which offered workers benefits ranging from health care to housing. Dubinsky's boundless energy was not limited solely to labor, and The Master of Seventh Avenue chronicles the activist's influential role as in local, national, and international politics. An extraordinary personality whose life and times present a fascinating lens into the American labor movement, Dubinsky leaps off of the pages of Parmet's meticulously-researched and vividly-detailed biography. The paperback edition of The Master of Seventh Avenue: David Dubinsky and the American Labor Movement was made possible with the generous support of the 21st Century ILGWU Heritage Fund.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1900s, thousands of immigrants labored in New Yorks Lower East Side sweatshops, enduring work environments that came to be seen as among the worst examples of Progressive-Era American industrialization. Although reformers agreed that these unsafe workplaces must be abolished, their reasons have seldom been fully examined.Sweated Work, Weak Bodies is the first book on the origins of sweatshops, exploring how they came to represent the dangers of industrialization and the perils of immigration. It is an innovative study of the language used to define the sweatshop, how these definitions shaped the first anti-sweatshop campaign, and how they continue to influence our current understanding of the sweatshop.

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the half-million workers who make the clothes which the American woman wears. The scene is a changing one, shifting from the shops where the clothes are made ot the arena of the public forum and of the national life. The theme is the struggle of an industrial group, once economically weka and neglected, for the recognition of its right and for the humanization of the conditions under whihc it works and lives. It is one of the most poignant and dramatic chapters in the general story of the movement of American Labor for a higher life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume enhance our understanding of Canadians on the job. Focusing on specific industries and kinds of work, from logging and longshoring to restaurant work and the needle trades, the contributors consider such issues as job skill, mass production, and the transformation of resource industries. They raise questions about how particular jobs are structured and changed over time, the role of workers' resistance and trade unions in shaping the lives of workers, and the impact of technology. Together these essays clarify a fundamental characteristic shared by all labour processes: they are shaped and conditioned by the social, economic, and political struggles of labour and capital both inside and outside the workplace. They argue that technological change, as well as all the transformations in the workplace, must become a social process that we all control.
