Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the 17th Lancers: Duke of Cambridge's Own The first and two last of the coloured plates in this book have been taken from original drawings by Mr J. P. Beadle. The remainder are from old drawings, by one G. Salisbury, in the possession of the regiment. They have been deliberately chosen as giving, on the whole, a more faithful presentment of the old and extinct British soldier than could easily be obtained at the present day, while their defects are of the obvious kind that disarm criticism. The portrait of Colonel John Hale is from an engraving after a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the original of which is still in possession of his lineal descendant in America. That of Lord Bingham is after a portrait kindly placed at the disposal of the Regiment by his son, the present Earl of Lucan. Those of the Duke of Cambridge and of Sir Drury Lowe are from photographs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A more general statement of the chief authorities used may be given here. Down to 1803 I have followed in the main Mr. Fortescue's History of the British Army. For the Peninsular War down to the end of 1812 Pro fessor Oman's History, and after that date Napier's have been used. The account of the Crimean War is, of course, derived chiefly from Kinglake's great work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Handbook of British Regiments (Routledge Revivals) by : Christopher Chant
Download or read book The Handbook of British Regiments (Routledge Revivals) written by Christopher Chant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the creation of the standing army in 1661, when each regiment was known by the name of its current colonel, there have been many reforms and rationalizations of the British army. From 31 cavalry regiments and 113 infantry regiments in 1881, at the time of this title’s first publication in 1988, the army had reduced to just 16 regiments of armour and 39 regiments of infantry through processes of absorption and amalgamation. The Handbook of British Regiments provides insight into the lineage and history of the approximately 85 regiments and corps which formed the British army towards the end of the 1980s. Comprehensive in coverage, each has a separate entry giving factual details in a layout standardized for easy comparison, including current title, colonel-in-chief, uniform and history, amongst others. A key title amongst Routledge reference reissues, this handbook provides an accessible guide to specialists as well as lay enthusiasts, and illustrates a sense of the continuity and inherited tradition of each regiment and corps.
