Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of St. Paul's School The hesitation which I feel in submitting this, the first history of St. Paul's School which has ever been written, to the consideration of the public, and more especially of Old Paulines, would be far greater were it not for the help and advice which I have received from the high master. Dr. Hillard read a portion of the ms. At a very early stage, and I doubt if I should have completed it but for the encouragement which he gave me. Subsequent History I have been asked to give some account of why and how I was led to try to do something toward the establishment of a boarding-school for boys in connection with the Episcopal Church. I had been a member of a public grammar school of the city of Boston, and at the age of nine I was sent to the Latin School, and was a member of that school for three years. Thence I went to the Round Hill School, Northampton, a principal reason for the change being the advantage of a country life. The school had been established nearly two years, and already had a great reputation; I was the seventieth boy and found there companions from all parts of the country. The effort to improve education was made there under favorable auspices. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Admission Registers of St. Paul's School, From 1748 to 1876: Edited With Biographical Notices and Notes on the Earlier Masters and Scholars of the School, From the Time of Its Foundation It was thought however that the approaching crisis in our School's history would justify. The publication of its records, and so I venture to intrust to your kindness the results of my work, undertaken in the leisure of a Schoolmaster. I am sensible that another ten years' labour would still have left the work imperfect, but I hope that the interest of the present juncture will excuse its production. C: Preparatory and High School for Boys and Girls, Eleventh Academic Year, 1909-1910 About a half-century ago the Rev. D. V. Van Antwerp came to Beaufort and began his efforts to reestablish a parish where old St. John's parish had flourished in colonial days. In connection with, this work he saw the need of a good school and forthwith gave\ of his energy freely to establish such a school. This was the beginning of St. Paul's Parish and St. Paul's School, and the present St. Paul's is but a restoration of the lov ing work of Mr. Van. Antwerp, Mrs James C Davis, Miss Elizabeth Robinson and others. In 1875 Mrs. Geffroy took up the work, continu ing the life-work of her mother (mrs. Davis), and since that time a continuous effort has been alive to build up and improve the school and push the work: forward. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of St. Paul and Vicinity, Vol. 2: A Chronicle of Progress and a Narrative Account of the Industries, Institutions and People of the City, and Its Tributary Territory A similar enlightened policy has dictated the opening, by the St. Paul board of education, of a continuation sch'ool for pupils under Six teen years of age who are compelled to work and who have not completed the grade course in the public schools. This is an important provision of the compulsory education law and its strict enforcement is essential to the protection of the working children. Under the proposed system the working children who come within the provisions of the law will be given certain hours each day in school in order to do the study equivalent to a completion of the grade course in the public schools. The cooperation of employers, by which the little toilers will not lose any of their wages while attending the school for a few hours each day, is an important feature of the plan and should be secured without difficulty. Both the children and their employers will derive ultimate benefit by compliance with the terms of the plan. It is unfortunate that children under sixteen years of age should be compelled to become wage earners, but the evils of the condition will be greatly lessened by successful conduct of the continuation school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of John Colet, D. D: Dean of St. Paul's, and Founder of St. Paul's School; With an Appendix of Some of His English Writings My dear Bishop, In dedicating this Life of Colet, by permission, to yourself, I am linking together two names which have been before associated. No one in the United States appreciates the work of our Founder more highly than you do; few have done more to make it known and honoured among your countrymen. When, in the summer of 1884, after an interval of forty years, you came on an important mission to London, it was one of your first cares to visit Dean Colet's school, then just housed afresh in its stately home in the western suburbs. As you stood before the ancient bust of the Founder, your visit might well have seemed to you something of a pilgrimage. Nearly four centuries had rolled away since Columbus first set foot on the island shore of San Salvador. Those centuries passed, the land whose outskirts were then discovered had become a mighty nation; and one of its bishops was standing before the image of an English contemporary of Columbus, a pioneer, in the world of religion and letters, with a faith as strong and a vision as far-reaching as his. In the presence of such memories as those raised by the names of Columbus and Colet, the petty differences of the hour, that may spring up between two great branches of one common stock, will fade into their proper insignificance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul: A Study in Social and Religious History Summing up the effect of my travels upon myself, I may say that the good germs of an historical appreciation of St. Paul, which I owed to my teachers and my own studies, underwent new growth in the apostle's own field and beneath the rays of his sun, but that many rank shoots that had sprung up in the shade of the school walls withered under the same beams. Never for one moment, however, have I experienced the dis appointment which has come to be characteristic of the newspaper writer of letters from abroad. The New Testament and the prophets whose souls are vibrant in the Sacred Book have become greater to me than before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Public Schools, Their Influence on English History: Charter House, Eton, Harrow, Merchant Taylors', Rugby, St. Paul's, Westminster, Winchester How far distinguished men have been influenced by the public schools at which they were educated must always remain a question which can receive no final and conclusive answer. I can only submit that the more keenly alive a man is to the influences of his time and generation - and who were more so than Shakespeare, Milton, and Byron the more liable must be his mind to receive a bent and a direction from his environment at school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Travels of St. Paul: Written for the American Sunday School Union In the lives recorded in the Bible, we have real examples, which not only give us right views of the human heart, but lead us to see how necessary and how perfect is that salvation which the Lord Jesus Christ has wrought out by his death and sufl'erings, and of which he has given us such full assurance by his glorious resurrection from the dead. Among those whose names have found a e in the d record, these is none '8f more note th he whose history we now seem. No human being has dens so much by his writings and life to extend the knowledge of the Gospel, and to none are mankind more indebted for the labours he has done and the sufferings he has borne for the cause of Truth and the good of his fellow men.
