Book excerpt: Institutions and their history matter; and not only because they are crucial elements in explaining a country’s socio-political evolution, but also as determinant factors of economic development, wealth and prosperity. Usually, the history of institutions has been taught the point of view of legal science, an approach that made the topic little attractive and often difficult to assimilate for students of other fields such as Economics, Business Studies, Marketing and others. And precisely these groups are the ones that this book addresses. It presents, in a rigorous yet entertaining way the evolution of Spanish institutions the first human settlements in the peninsula to date and does so explaining the main points in a succinct, but well-contextualised form. For this purpose, each chapter combines the exposition of a given period’s historic facts with the description of its most characteristic institutions. Each chapter then complements its content by explaining the history of one notable symbol of Spain (its flag, the different coat of arms, feasts, orders, etcetera). This modular structure, together with the presentation of the information according to its degree of relevance, allows readers — depending on their specific interests and needs—, to adapt and combine the texts that compose this book as to optimise the results of their study. “The modern didactic approach followed by the authors, their understanding of institutions in a broader sense than usual, the extraordinary work of synthesis […] has produced a basic tool for the study of this subject, one that will give students fruitful results, even if they have very heterogeneous backgrounds in Spanish history.” Esther Valbuena

Book excerpt: In A History of Spanish Institutions the evolution of Spanish institutions from the first human settlements on the Peninsula to the present day is offered in a succinct and appropriately contextualised manner. To this end, each chapter combines a description of the historical context of a period with the description of its most characteristic institutions. These are complemented by an explanation of the main “symbols” of Spain and their history. The importance of institutions and their historical evolution as a determining factor in economic and socio-political development has been proved by numerous studies. Hence, the knowledge of the main national institutions from a historical, legal and economic perspective is essential for those who wish to operate in the Spanish market. The modular structure of the handbook, together with the differentiated presentation of the content according to its level of relevance, will allow the readers to adapt and combine the texts that make up this book according to their specific needs and interests, thus optimising the outcome of their study. This revised and expanded second edition has added a selection of empirical works to the introductory chapter, reflects the latest historiographical developments, updates the bibliography, includes new examples of symbols, and expands on the main historical milestones and their institutional impact up to the time of going to press.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Institutions of the Southwest The present work was suggested to the writer while a student at the Johns Hopkins University. There coming in contact with the large amount of work which has been done iri the study of Teu tonic institutions as represented in England, Germany, and America, it seemed to him that spanish-american institutions were also worthy of investigation and especially interesting in comparison with anglo-american institutions as developed in the colonies of the Atlantic coast. A former residence of a number of years in California, where certain forms of the old civilization still remain, served to heighten the writer's interest in the subject. Its study has been profitable and interesting to the writer, though carried on during a busy university life. To the latter fact may be attributed, in part, many of the imperfections of the book, which is far removed from the author's ideal. However, it is hoped that this volume will at least awaken a deeper interest in a long neg lected part of American history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Spain The present work is an attempt to give in one volume the main features of Spanish history from the standpoint of America. It should serve almost equally well for residents of both the English-speaking and the Spanish American countries, since the underlying idea has been that Americans generally are concerned with the growth of that Spanish civilization which was transmitted to the new world. One of the chief factors in American life today is that of the relations between Anglo-Saxon and Hispanic America. They are becoming increasingly important. The southern republics themselves are forging ahead; on the other hand many of them are still dangerously weak, leaving possible openings for the not unwilling old world powers; and some of the richest prospective markets of the globe are in those as yet scantily developed lands. The value of a better understanding between the peoples of the two Americas, both for the reasons just named and for many others, scarcely calls for argument. It is almost equally clear that one of the essentials to such an understanding is a comprehension of Spanish civilization, on which that of the Spanish American peoples so largely depends. That information this volume aims to provide. It confines itself to the story of the growth of Spanish civilization in Spain, but its ultimate transfer to the Americas has been constantly in the writer's mind in the choice of his material, as will appear from the frequent allusions in the text. An attempt is made to treat Spanish institutions not as static (which they never were) but in process of evolution, from period to period. The development of Spanish institutions in the colonies and the later independent states, it is hoped, will be the subject of another volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974. The close connection between universities and bureaucratic institutions such as church and state was perhaps first noticed by Max Weber. Such institutions, he observed, require a dependable source of cadres to run them. Thus, the size and composition of university enrollments are often a function of bureaucratic needs. Richard Kagan examines the dynamics of this relationship historically by racing the growth and decline of the university system in Castile, the heart of the Spanish monarchy, between 1500 and 1809. This period marked the emergence of a strong Habsburg state and a militant Catholic church, both of which looked to the universities for "educated" men. Accordingly, the universities grew rapidly, and by 1600 Castile was perhaps the best-educated kingdom in Europe. But this did not last. Jobs were increasingly filled through nepotism, causing students to abandon the universities in search of other careers. By 1700, the universities were small, backward institutions. Kagan begins by examining the nature and position of primary, secondary, and university institutions in Hapsburg Spain, concentrating on the extent and purpose of literacy. In Part II, Kagan discusses the growth and development of the ruling hierarchies in the bureaucratic world and gives special consideration to the criteria used to recruit officials. The author concludes with an assessment of the impact of bureaucratic changes in church and state on the universities of Castile. The data he collects on changes in the curriculum, the professorate, and the social and geographical backgrounds of the students are used to support hypotheses about the spectacular rise and collapse of university education in Spain, the process of modernization, the development of bureaucracies, and the crisis of the Spanish monarchy. Students and Society in Early Modern Spain demonstrates that institutions of higher learning often collapse when they become over-professionalized and fail to respond to changing conditions. Thus, Kagan provides a study of education and social change—of why educational institutions are central to a society in one century but only peripheral to it in the next. The author casts new light not only on the short lived educational revolution of the sixteenth century but also on education in other societies, both past and present.
