Navajo Tribal cops Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito, and their mentor, the legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, investigate two perplexing cases in this exciting Southwestern mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Spider Woman’s Daughter. Doing a good deed for a relative offers the perfect opportunity for Sergeant Jim Chee and his wife, Officer Bernie Manuelito, to get away from the daily grind of police work. But two cases will call them back from their short vacation and separate them—one near Shiprock, and the other at iconic Monument Valley. Chee follows a series of seemingly random and cryptic clues that lead to a missing woman, a coldblooded suspect, and a mysterious mound of dirt and rocks that could be a gravesite. Bernie has her hands full managing the fallout from a drug bust gone wrong, uncovering the origins of a fire in the middle of nowhere, and looking into an ambitious solar energy development with long-ranging consequences for Navajo land. Under the guidance of their mentor, retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Bernie and Chee will navigate unexpected obstacles and confront the greatest challenge yet to their skills, commitment, and courage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Juan County was established in 1880 following the famous winter trek and steep descent through the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail to Bluff, Utah. Behind the settlement of this community by the San Juan River is a story of tenacity, determination, and hardship. The Hole-in-the-Rock was a sandstone crevice discovered fortuitously by pioneers when a wild ram escaped its pursuers and descended to the river by that route. After blasting, building up the grade, and lowering by ropes, the wagon train finally emerged through the crevice to the river below and finished the last difficult miles into Bluff. Miner and photographer Charles Goodman documented the early days of San Juan County, from the production of bricks and molasses to the establishment of Bluff Oil Company, and many of his unique images, dating from 1892 to 1913, are included in this volume.

Book excerpt: When Friday Harbor, Washington, was incorporated in 1909, some wanted the town's name changed. In a misunderstanding, the British had named it in 1858 for a shepherd named "Friday," who thought they were making introductions, not asking the name of the sheltered bay where he minded sheep. But the name stuck. As with many of the young state's small port towns, timber, salmon fishing, and farming fueled Friday Harbor's early economy. However, by midcentury, the lumber mill was gone, the introduction of irrigation in Central Washington swamped fresh produce markets, and the fish and pea canneries were shut down. Life slowed and some left, but in being passed by--until tourism caught on in the late 1970s--the town (and island) developed a unique sense of community that survives to this day.

Book excerpt: While Creede, Colorado, had the reputation as a wide-open mining town in the early 1890s ("there is no night in Creede"), Creede's miners went two miles up the hill to nearby Bachelor to drink, gamble and enjoy the ladies of the night. Riches made at nearby silver mines during the day were lost in a night at one of the Bachelor's numerous saloons, gambling halls, and brothels. Among its 1,500 residents, nearly 200 prostitutes plied their trade nightly "Poker Alice" Tubbs, the notorious female gambler who dealt faro and played poker, said that Bachelor "ran ceaselessly at a most turbulent pitch. Ed O'Kelley--a Bachelor founder and its town marshal--murdered Bob Ford, the "dirty little coward" who had assassinated Jesse James just ten years earlier. World heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey, lived in Bachelor as a child and probably began to learn his pugilistic skills here. Murders, violence, accidents and destructive fires were commonplace. One man killed his mining partner because he was getting too friendly with his daughters; another killed a man following a dispute over a "turkey shoot." Amid this turmoil, town residents also found time to go to the Bachelor Opera House, attend church, enjoy July 4th celebrations, or simply enjoy a walk in the spectacular scenery. Young children explored the hills and local mines in search of adventure--and found it. Read this exciting story of a ghost town whose candle burned brightly for a short period of twenty years only to return to its natural state as a high mountain meadow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1893, a light has been shining from Patos Island, the northernmost island in Puget Sound. Built to guide ships through treacherous waters, the lighthouse was also a happy home for many, including Edward Durgan and his family in the early 1900s. Boundary waters smugglers and rumrunners once visited the island to stash their contraband, and it was a front-line guard for the nation during World War II. Manned for eighty-one years by the U.S. government, the light was automated in 1974 and is now maintained by the Coast Guard. Join authors Edrie Vinson and Terri Vinson, members of the Keepers of the Patos Light, as they explore the history of this unique Washington landmark.
