Book excerpt: Ilya Vinitsky's Vasily Zhukovsky's Romanticism and the Emotional History of Russia is the first major study in English of Vasily Zhukovsky (1783–1852)—a poet, translator of German romantic verse, and, crucially, mentor of Pushkin. It focuses overdue attention to an important figure in Russian literary and cultural history. Vinitsky’s "psychological biography" argues that Zhukovsky very consciously set out to create for himself an emotional life that reflected his unique brand of romanticism, different from what we associate with Pushkin or poets such as Byron or Wordsworth. For Zhukovsky, ideal love was harmonious, built on a mystical foundation of spiritual kinship. Vinitsky shows how Zhukovksy played a pivotal role in the evolution of ideas central to Russia’s literary and cultural identity from the end of the eighteenth century into the decades following the Napoleonic Wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian literature between 1750 and the romantic age presents a confus ing picture. Various literary movements arose and existed side by side, while new trends made themselves felt. At no other time in the history of Russian literature was there a similar influx of widely disparate literary and intellectual influences from the West. The complex evolution of literature is reflected in the area of literary classification. Period terms have been used in great variety, yet without general agreement as to the extent, or even the nature of the trends described. The essays of this study are devoted to two major literary trends of the 18th and early 19th century, -sentimentalism and preromanticism. They aim to elucidate their evolu tion as well as at defining and describing the conceptual framework on which they rest. Since the 18th century did not draw a sharp line between translated and original literature, both have been included here. Literary, philosophical, and general cultural influences from the West were of consi derable importance for Russian literature. The concepts, motifs and themes which reached Russian writers in translations moulded their own original works. The 18th century witnessed the formation of an adequate literary language which culminated in Karamzin's style. The distinction of two stages in the development of sentimentalism as suggested here and the differentiation between both of them and a third literary trend, preroman ticism, is an attempt to reflect adequately the rapid change in stylistic and poetic norms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balanced precariously between fact and fiction, the historical novel is often viewed with suspicion. Some have attacked it as a mongrel form, a “bastard son” born of “history’s flagrant adultery with imagination.” Yet it includes some of the most celebrated achievements of Russian literature, with Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Leo Tolstoy, and scores of other writers contributing to this tradition. Dan Ungurianu’s Plotting History traces the development of the Russian historical novel from its inception in the romantic era to the emergence of Modernism on the eve of the Revolution. Organized historically and thematically, the study is focused on the cultural paradigms that shaped the evolution of the genre and are reflected in masterpieces such as The Captain’s Daughter and War and Peace. Ungurianu examines the variety of approaches by which Russian writers combined fact with fiction and explores the range of subjects that inspired the Russian historical imagination. Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Magazine “Ungurianu has produced a most valuable work for literary scholars.”—Andrew M. Drozd, Slavic and East European Journal “[Ungurianu’s] overwhelming knowledge, impeccable documentation, erudite notes, and valuable addenda make for a treasure house of information and keen analysis. . . . Essential.”—Choice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the North in Russian romantic literature as a symbol of national particularity. It largely ignores the vogue of Ossian, being primarily concerned with the significance of the North for Russia's national self-image. The author demonstrates how, starting with Lomonosov, the North initially functions as a symbol of Russia's 'new' European identity. Gradually it acquires a different ideological charge, giving voice to growing resentment over the inroads of western culture. By the turn of the century, the North no longer denotes Russia's supposed Europeanness, but its 'unique national' spirit, believed to have been polluted by the slavish imitation of the West. By this time, the theme of winter was discovered as an appropriate vehicle for the expression of nationalist sentiments, culminating in the popular myth of the winter of 1812 as an ally of the Russian people. This study also investigates the theme of 'northern homesickness' as opposed to the lure of the South and concludes by examining the national stereotypes of Russia's northern neighbours, the Swedes and the Finns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Russian fiction was born in the age of Pushkin and in a remarkably short period of time the Russian novel became one of the glories of world literature. This book tells part of the story of how this happened. Of course, Pushkin, Gogol and Lermontov are the primary figures of the Romantic era, and Mr. Mersereau devotes many pages to them. But it is the context of their works which is the main subject of this history-the entire development of Russian prose from the start of the 19th century until 1852. This background makes the appearance of such masterpieces as Dead Souls, A Hero of Our Time, The Captain's Daughter, and The Queen of Spades more understandable, but none the less amazing."--Page 4 of cover.
