Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections of the State of Pennsylvania The proverb says Charity begins at home. The study of history ought to begin at home also yet how many men are there in this state, as in others, who are far more familiar with the history of England, or with the career of Alexander, Caesar, or Napoleon, than with the events that have occurred upon the very fields which they themselves are tilling And this arises not so much from the want of intelligence On the part of the people, as from the lack of proper books and documents within their reach. It is believed, therefore, that a Work of the kind here pre sented is needed by the intelligent yeomanry of the state, for whose use it is especially intended and the compiler hopes that, while it may serve to enliven their long winter evenings, it will awaken in their minds a spirit of inquiry into the history of their own immediate neighborhoods, and at the same time furnish them with a fund of instructive incidents relating to the more dis tant sections of the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania, the Keystone: A Short History This work gives in outline the history of Pennsylvania. It is the outcome of long special study with more than ordinary advantages. The author has here indicated his view of the manner in which that history ought to be presented with greater fulness and detail. Much of the story has been based upon original materials preserved in the Library of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania never before utilized. The facts which go to prove the unequalled influence of Pennsylvania in the development of American affairs are narrated, but comment and opinions are omitted. Many heretofore accepted conventions have upon investigation been discarded. And, using the language of a recent author, "I have been sparing of references that encumber the foot of a page like barnacles on the keel of a vessel and delay progress." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Pennsylvania The purpose of this little book is to provide the boys and girls in the schools of Pennsylvania with a brief and clear account of the origin and growth of our state and its institutions. Believing that history is not merely past politics, but past life, the writer has tried to place due emphasis upon every phase of that life - social, industrial, political, intellectual, and religious. It has been his aim to state the principles upon which Pennsylvania was founded, to trace the steady growth of the state from small beginnings to its present imperial greatness, and to introduce the men, many of them well-nigh forgotten, who were the makers of that greatness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Province of Pennsylvania The History of the Province of Pennsylvania has been printed from Samuel Smith's manuscript in the library of The Historical Society of Pennsylvania. As an examination of his history of New Jersey indicates, this manuscript would have been carefully edited by the author before publication, but it has been deemed best to follow the orthography and punctuation of the original. The author divided his work into two parts, of which this is the first. The second part contains: The introduction, and some account of the religious progress of the people called Quakers therein, [Pennsylvania] including the like account respecting the same people in New Jersey, as constituting one yearly meeting. This second portion was printed by Samuel Hazard in The Register of Pennsylvania, Volumes VI and VII, 1830-1831, with the exception of Chapters XVI and XVII, which were omitted as they contain nothing but a letter from Elizabeth Webb, giving an account of her religious experience, to Dr. Boehm, and his reply, both of which have we understand been published in a pamphlet; and as directions are likewise given to the transcriber of Smith's Ms. to omit copying them. Samuel Smith, the author of The History of the Province of Pennsylvania, was of Quaker stock, the great-grandson of Richard Smith of Bramham in the West Riding of Yorkshire, one of the original proprietaries of West Jersey and a signer of The Concessions and Agreements of the Proprietors, Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Province of West New Jersey, in America, 1676. He had by his wife Anne Yeates, Samuel Smith of Bramham, who settled in West Jersey in 1694, married Elizabeth Lovett, and was a member of the General Assembly for several years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Civil Government of Pennsylvania The meaning Of a vote and the sacredness of the ballot can be taught in connection with many of the lessons in American history. The perpetuity Of a free government depends very largely upon the faith of the people in the purity and efficacy of the ballot. The boy who asked his teacher whether it is justifiable to accept money for doing what is right, say for an honest day's work. And if so, whether it is not justifiable to accept money for a vote provided one votes the right ticket, was sadly in need of instruction showing why the law has made it a crime either to buy or to sell a vote. An excellent point Of departure for a lesson on the wickedness of bribery is the famous reply of Gen. Joseph Reed: I am not worth purchasing; but such as I am, the King of Great Britain is not rich enough to buy me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State Works of Pennsylvania What is known technically in the history of Pennsylvania as the state works comprised a system of transportation which was built, owned and operated by the commonwealth. Public works and internal improvements are other names commonly applied to the system. The writer has, therefore, used these three terms interchangeably. The popular movement for the state itself to provide an adequate means Of transportation to the growing West may be said to have commenced in Pennsylvania in 1823. The work of construction was undertaken in 1826 and within a few years an extensive sys tem Of canals and railways was built and in operation. By 1859, however, there was not a single mile of public-owned canal or railway in the commonwealth. It is thus seen that the present study is limited to a definite field which furnishes an historical example Of public ownership and control of a transportation system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Centuries of Pennsylvania History Pennsylvania justly merits the proud title, The Key tone State. Her history more than her geography gave her commanding relations to the sister colonies clustered along the western margin of the Atlantic. Her great founder and first English owner, William Penn is the noblest character in America's colonial history. In Penn sylvania every creed and every nationality was not only tolerated but welcomed. Her colonial life was more com plex than that of any sister colony. To mould this life, so unlike in nationality, in religion, in civic ideals, and in industrial experience, into a unified people is one of the noblest records in the annals of any nation. To the credit of her people this was done without persecution and with out coercion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the History of Pennsylvania The earliest European settlers of Pennsylvania were the Swedes and the Dutch. Henry Hudson, in his daring voy age in the Half Moon, in 1609, entered the Delaware Bay, thus establishing the Dutch claim to this region. The river and the bay took their name from Lord Delaware, a governor of Virginia who entered the bay the next year. In 1616, Captain Hendrickson, a Dutch navigator, explored the Delaware River as far as the mouth of the Schuylkill. His vessel, the Onrust or Restless, had been built on the Hudson, taking the place of his original ship from Holland. The Dutch in 1623, under Captain Mey, settled on the Jersey shore of the Delaware, nearly opposite where Philadelphia now stands. This Captain Mey is new best remembered by the cape that bears his name. From this settlement the Dutch went into Pennsylvania, establishing a valuable trade in beaver-skins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania, Province and State: A History From 1609 to 1790 As the French formed an alliance with the Indians during the war of 1755, so now did the British form an alliance with those whom twenty years before they sought to destroy. If the white settlers had brutalized and degraded them with rum, cheated them in trade, robbed them of their lands, and coarsely showed their mastery on every occasion, more than once did they pay a heavy penalty for their selfishness, shortsightedness and rascality. The American colonists feared the union of the Indians with the British, for they knew the nature of Indian warfare. An Indian was not a brave, open fighter, but a cowardly, mean one. Though hiding himself for days and weeks, and almost perishing with cold or hunger, to secure the chance of shooting his foe undiscovered, he was averse to forming into ranks and engaging in battle. Possessing a strong spirit of revenge, every white man knew that the Indian would prove relentless and untiring in compassing his destruction. It was now too late to win his good-will, for his spirit of revenge was at white heat His hour to lay low his despoiler had come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Account the Pocono Region of Pennsylvania Probably the truest estimate of Penn's peace policy with the Indians is obtained by considering that he neither originated the policy nor first introduced it into practical use, but that he was the first who gave it such prominence in the establishment of the Province as to instil into it a real dynamic force. A forcible illustration of similar conditions in modern times is furnished in Mr. Roosevelt's identification with anti-trust legisla tion, for notwithstanding the fact that he neither originated it, nor did he originally enforce it, yet he so aroused the public mind on the subject at a peculiar psychological period in the history of the nation, as to practically regenerate the anti-trust policy of the government, and under President Taft's administration of law and reason it became a distinct moral question to be reckoned with by all parties.
