Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of London, Vol. 1 of 2 I have endeavoured, therefore, in the first of these volumes to weave the history of the city of London as told by the chroniclers into a continuous narrative pre facing it with a topographical account of the site, and by an attempt to describe the effects on London of the Roman and Saxon invasions. The mediaeval history includes that of the guilds, the wards, the churches, the monasteries, and the companies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London, Vol. 1 of 2: Historic and Social It is difficult to write without a certain emotion of the world's greatest metropolis. London has a history so varied, a past so majestic, a present so important, and a future so problematic that even in a partial and incomplete appreciation of so vast a subject all the emotions and well nigh all the resources of description and rhetorie could well be called into requisition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of London, Vol. 2 of 2 Thorney, according to a well qualified authority, ' was 470 yards long and 370 broad, and was washed by the Thames on the east; by a rivulet which ran down College Street on the south by a streamlet which crossed King Street on the north; and by a moat called the Long Ditch, which united the two streams and ran along the line of Prince's and Delahay Streets. Stone walls de fended the whole precinct, pierced by handsome gates, one of which was in King Street, one near New Palace Yard, one opening on Tothill Street,1 and one in College Street where stood the abbey mill. Bridges crossed the brooks, and are said to exist still, but far beneath the present streets, for Thorney has been raised about nine feet, on the average, above its ancient level. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tower of London, Vol. 1 of 2 It would be vain to search any other city, Rome itself not excepted, for another such group of buildings, or to match the historic interest and splendid record of the ancient Norman structure. The Tower is indeed rife with interest; the most dramatic events of our country's history during more than seven hundred years have been enacted within or near its walls. To see it is to conjure up a vision of scenes, some brilliant and stately, some tragic and awful, but all full of deepest interest to the hearts and minds of Britons, to whom the history of their land is dear. Although several works - some voluminous, such as the two ponderous quartos by John Bayley, published in 182 5, and some more recent, such as the histories of the Tower by Britton and Brayley, and, more recently still, those by Lord de Ros and Doyne Bell - have appeared, I venture to think that in writing the present account of the Tower I have not undertaken a thankless or a useless task. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of London The history of Roman London is meagre. Seven teen years after the building of the Citadel, on the rebellion of Boadicea, the Roman general Suetonius abandoned the place, as unable to defend it. All those who remained were massacred by the insurgents. After this, so far as we know, for history is silent, there was peace in London for 200 years. Then one Carausius, an officer in command of the fleet stationed in the Channel for the suppression of piracies, assumed the title of emperor. He continued undisturbed for some years, his soldiers remaining faithful to him on account of his wealth: he established a Mint at London and struck a large amount of money there. He was mur dered by one of his officers, Allectus, who called himself emperor in turn and continued to rule in Britain for three years. Then the end came for him as well. The Roman general landing with a large force marched upon London where Allectus lay. A battle fought in the south of London resulted in the overthrow and death of the usurper. His soldiers taking advantage of the confusion began to plunder and. Murder in the town, but were stopped and killed by the victors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Royalty Restored or London Under Charles II, Vol. 1 of 2 No social history of the court of Charles II. has heretofore been written. The Grammont Memoirs, devoid of date and detail, and addressed 'to those who read only for amusement, ' present but brief imperfect sketches of the wits and beauties who thronged the court of the merry monarch whilst the brilliant Frenchman sojourned in England. Pepys, during the first nine years of the Restoration, narrates such gossip as reached him regarding Whitehall and the practices that obtained there. Evelyn records some trifling actions of the king and his courtiers, with a view of pointing a moral, rather than from a desire of adorning a tale. To supply this want in our literature, I have endeavoured to present a picture of the domestic life of a king, whose name recalls pages of the brightest romance and strangest gallantry in our chronicles.
