CHAD TO THE REIGN OF OFFA, KING OF MERCIA. FEW years after the death of St. Chad, during the prelacy of Winfrid, who was his immediate successor, Theodore, Archbishop of Canterbury, proposed at a national synod convened by him at Hertford (a frequent residence of the East Saxon kings) that the immense see of Mercia should be divided into several smaller bishoprics. Winfrid, objecting, was deprived of the Mercian see by Theodore, and Saxulf, who consented to the subdivision of the diocese, was appointed; consequently four new sees were created, Saxulf remaining at Lichfield. In 676 a bishop was placed at Hereford, in 678 one at Sidnacester (for Lindsey), and in 680 the sees of Worcester and Leicester were founded.W By this time ecclesiastical influence had become very great throughout the whole of England. In 696 we read of the first church rate being levied. The legislature of Ina, King of the West Saxons, exacted that the requirements of church worship should not be left to be provided for by oblations upon the altar, but that a regular assessment should be made upon houses. Every dwelling was to be valued at c Christmas, and the rate so imposed, called " church-shot," or "church-scot," was payable on the following Martinmas. Money being scarce, the payment was made in produce--usually in grain or seed, but sometimes in poultry. Defaulters were to be fined forty shillings, and to pay church-shot twelvefold. The influence and power of the court of Rome gradually spread over the church in England. The habits and customs of the Italian priesthood were imitated generally throughout the country, and papal supremacy and papal interference were soon felt throughout the whole Heptarchy.
