Book excerpt: The rich and bountiful poetry of Armenia is presented in this collection, adeptly and sensitively translated to English to preserve the expressive beauty in the verses. Armenian poems are rich with passionate expression, sometimes voicing pride in the national culture, history and identity. Some of the poems are outright romantic; celebrating the beauty, aesthetics and emotive intensity of youthful courtship. Other verses celebrate Armenia's martial prowess; with differing cultures on multiple sides, the land often saw battle. The importance of the country's location at the border between the European and Asian continents finds allusion, as authors nod to past glories, and predict future prowess. Reference to the scenic lands of Armenia, its local dances and the way of life abound in the verse, the poetry often brimming with cultured allusions. Significantly, this anthology includes the most famed and celebrated works by the lauded national poets, together with older poetry and hymns dating back as far as the early-Medieval era. The reader thus acquires an acute impression of how Armenian poetic works evolved through the centuries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Poetry, Vol. 3 In the first volume of this History I expressed the hope that my work might be completed by the close of the last century. I have observed without surprise that by my failure to make good this anticipation I have exposed myself to some, perhaps not unmerited, reproach. But I venture to think I am not without excuse. Had it indeed been my purpose to make this History a mere record of biographical facts and isolated studies of individual poets, I might have been able to perform what I promised. But to accomplish the task that I have proposed to myself - namely, to trace through our poetry the growth of the national imagination, and to estimate the place occupied by each poet in a continuous movement of art - steady concentration of thought is required; and here circumstances have been against me. For to say nothing of my official duties, my election in 1895 to the Chair of Poetry at Oxford, which I could not have foreseen when making my first calculations, turned the thoughts of my leisure hours in a different direction, and it was not until the close of 1900 that I was able to resume my interrupted work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Poetry in English is designed to offer a fresh, multi-voiced, and comprehensive analysis of 'poetry': from Anglo-Saxon culture through contemporary British, Irish, American, and Global culture, including English, Scottish, and Welsh poetry, Anglo-American colonial and post-colonial poetry, and poetry in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, India, Africa, Asia, and other international locales. The series both synthesises existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge research, employing a global team of expert contributors for each of the volumes. Sixteenth-Century British Poetry features a history of the birth moment of modern 'English' poetry in greater detail than previous studies. It examines the literary transitions, institutional contexts, artistic practices, and literary genres within which poets compose their works. Each chapter combines an orientation to its topic and a contribution to the field. Specifically, the volume introduces a narrative about the advent of modern English poetry from Skelton to Spenser, attending to the events that underwrite the poets' achievements: Humanism; Reformation; monarchism and republicanism; colonization; print and manuscript; theatre; science; and companionate marriage. Featured are metre and form, figuration and allusiveness, and literary career, as well as a wide range of poets, from Wyatt, Surrey, and Isabella Whitney to Ralegh, Drayton, and Mary Herbert. Major works discussed include Sidney's Astrophil and Stella, Spenser's Faerie Queene, Marlowe's Hero and Leander, and Shakespeare's Sonnets.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Poetry, Vol. 4 of 4: From the Twelfth to the Close of the Sixteenth Century Soon after the year 1500, Lilly, the famous grammarian, who had learned Greek at Rhodes, and had afterwards acquired a polished Latinity at Rome under Johannes Sulpicius and Pomponius Sabinus, became the first teacher of Greek at any public school in England. This was a Saint Paul's school in London, then newly established by Dean Colet, and celebrated by Erasmus;and of which Lilly, as one of the most exact and accomplished scholars of his age, was appointed the first master. And that ancient prejudices were now gradually wearing off, and a national taste for critical studies and the graces of composition began to be diffused, appears from this circumstance alone; that from the year 1503 to the Reformation, there were more grammar schools, most of which at present are perhaps of little and importance, founded and endowed in England, than had been for three hundred years before. The practice of educating our youth in the monasteries growing into disuse, near twenty new grammar schools were established within this period: and among these, Wolfey's school at Ipswich, which soon fell a sacrifice to the resentment or the avarice of Henry the Eight, deserves particular notice, as it rivalled those of Winchester and Eton.
