Book excerpt: Gold sparked the major migration of white settlers to the Dakota Territory a century ago, but for South Dakota, grass proved to be the real bonanza. Today more and more Americans are coming to understand the almost mystical appeal of the horizon and the primitive pull of the earth that make South Dakota one of the few remaining places where the individual can enjoy real isolation and a sense of standing apart from the crowd.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dakota Territory, And, South Dakota, Its History and Its People, Vol. 3 Probably no subject is of greater historic interest to the people of the state than the development of the natural resources. South Dakota did not start out on the perilous but prosperous voyage of statehood with either a bankrupt treasury or a dearth of resources that could be made useful. Three very important resources shone above all others when the young state began its career, namely: (1) The mines; (2) the plant products, and (3) the live stock industry. All three had grown wonderfully under the sunny skies of territorial existence, but had in reality only well commenced. In addition and only of secondary importance, were the following additional means of resource (1) Lignite and coal beds; (2) artesian water supply; (3) cement formations; (4) building stone; (5) fer tile soil; (6) available moisture for crops; (7) abundant timber in the extreme western part and along many streams; (8) extension of the corn growing area; (9) introduction of drouth resistant plants; (10) irrigation and intensive farm ing; (11) improvement of live stock; (12) diversified farming and rotation of crops (13) extension of the fruit growing area; (14) oil and natural gas deposits; (15) available water power; (16) the intelligent, mixed and industrious popula tion; (17) healthful climate; (18) large amount of annual sunshine; (19) wild game for food, furs, pelts, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dakota Territory, Vol. 1: South Dakota, Its History and Its People Regarding the early inhabitants of this country, trustworthy history goes no farther into the past than to the discovery and settlement of the Atlantic region by the Europeans. Conjectures have been formed from the traditions of the Indians, and from relics discovered in ancient mounds and earthworks taken in connection with the course of events narrated in sacred and profane history, that lead to the belief that this country was peopled at a very early period by colonies from Eastern Asia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American democratic ideals, civic republicanism, public morality, and Christianity were the dominant forces at work during South Dakota’s formative decade. What? In our cynical age, such a claim seems either remarkably naïve or hopelessly outdated. Territorial politics in the late-nineteenth-century West is typically viewed as a closed-door game of unprincipled opportunism or is caricatured, as in the classic film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, as a drunken exercise in bombast and rascality. Now Jon K. Lauck examines anew the values we like to think were at work during the founding of our western states. Taking Dakota Territory as a laboratory for examining a formative stage of western politics, Lauck finds that settlers from New England and the Midwest brought democratic practices and republican values to the northern plains and invoked them as guiding principles in the drive for South Dakota statehood. Prairie Republic corrects an overemphasis on class conflict and economic determinism, factors posited decades ago by such historians as Howard R. Lamar. Instead, Lauck finds South Dakota’s political founders to be agents of Protestant Christianity and of civic republicanism—an age-old ideology that entrusted the polity to independent, landowning citizens who placed the common interest above private interest. Focusing on the political culture widely shared among settlers attracted to the Great Dakota Boom of the 1880s, Lauck shows how they embraced civic virtue, broad political participation, and agrarian ideals. Family was central in their lives, as were common-school education, work, and Christian community. In rescuing the story of Dakota’s settlers from historical obscurity, Prairie Republic dissents from the recent darker portrayal of western history and expands our view and understanding of the American democratic tradition.
