Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of California and an Extended History of Its Southern Coast Counties, Vol. 2 of 2 Mr. Bard was made a Mason in Ventura and is now a member of Oxnard Lodge, F. A. M., and of Oxnard Chapter, R. A. M., and of the Ventura Commandery, K. T. He is a member and liberal supporter of the Presby terian Church, and a man of superior integrity and rectitude. There is a pronounced yet un explainable influence felt in the presence of some people that can be accounted for in no other way than that it is caused by the in ward thoughts and high motives of the per son to whom thev are ascribed. \vhen in the presence of such a man one feels, instinctive lv. That he has lived a pure and upright life and is one who can be trusted implicitly with out fear that any confidence imposed in him will be betrayed. There is no necessity to eulogize a man of the well known reputation and eminence of Senator Bard, yet it will not be out of place to mention that he possesses to a remarkable degree this personal magnet ism, as it is popularly called. While naturally endowed with the qualities which win the love and esteem of his fellow men, there is a strength of purpose in all his actions without which it would be impossible for him to live the blameless life he has with a career so filled with public and private duties as have fallen to his share. Here, through the exercise of that thrift and frugality which had been instilled into them in a home where principle and char acter and common sense constituted the ani mating spirit rather than more idle catchwords of daily life, they managed to save a few thou sand dollars, which they first invested in a small mountain farm supplying produce to the mines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the State of California and Biographical Record of San Joaquin County, Vol. 2 of 2: Containing Biographies of Well-Known Citizens of the Past and Present Concerning the home of Captain Webe the famous poet and traveler, Bayard Taylor, writes as follows: We were greatly delighted with our visit to Captain Weber's, who transformed a tract of land between two sloughs into a garden. There is no more delightful villa in existence. A thick hedge, outside of which is a row of semi tropical trees, surrounds the peninsula. The gate opened into a lofty avenue of trellis work, where the sunshine strikes through branches of ame thyst and chrysolite, while on either hand beds of roses fill the air with odor. The house is low but spacious, the woodwork of natural red wood. Vine - covered verandas surround it and every window discloses a vision of plants that would be the glory of any greenhouse on the Atlantic coast. In Mrs. Weber I found the ac quaintance of my former visit. Well I remem ber the day when, hungry and footsore, I went to the door of her father's house in the valley of the San Jose and found her reading a poem of mine. Her father saddled his horse and rode with me to the top of the mountain, and her own hands prepared the grateful supper and breakfast that gave me strength for the tramp to Monterey. The garden delighted us beyond measure. The walks were waist deep in fuchias and geraniums, and the pepper trees, with their loose, misty boughs, hailed us as do friends from Athens. A row of Italian cypresses were shoot ing rapidly above the other boughs in the gar den. How they will transform the character of the landscape when their dark obelisks stand in full stature! Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura Counties, California, Vol. 2 John F. More. Distinguished not only as one of the early promoters of Santa Barbara County, and a prominent figure in its material develop ment, but for the remarkable sagacity and discernment he has displayed in all of his business transactions, John F. More holds an important position among the more extensive and progressive agriculturists of Southern California, his highly improved and finely equipped ranch, containing between and acres, being advantageously located on the sea coast, about five miles from Santa Barbara. A native of Ohio, he was born in Medina County, August 19, 1839, and was there brought up and educated. Mr. More was one of a family of twelve children, six boys and six girls, all of whom eventually settled in California. His eldest brother. A. B. More, who served for a time in the Mexican war, came to this state in 1846, and three years later two other brothers, T. Wallace More and A. P. More, also located here, and in 1850 they were joined by another brother, Henry H. More. These enterprising brothers invested largely in land, at one time owning a strip extending from within a mile of the sea up the Santa Clara Valley for more than thirty-two miles, a valuable property, from which they subsequently sold acres to G. G. Briggs. On March 24, 1877, T. Wallace More was brutally assassinated by masked men who first set fire to his barn in order to get him out of his house, and when he appeared at his door shot him, even continuing to pierce his body with bullets while he was dying. A. P. More, whose death occurred in 1893, was at that time sole owner of Santa Rosa Island. Three of the brothers, A. P. More, Henry H. More and A. B. More, are buried in Oakland, California, while the bodies of two other brothers, T. W. More and F. W. More, were laid to rest in the Santa Barbara Cemetery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural and Civil History of California, Vol. 2 of 2: Containing an Accurate Description of That Country, Its Soil, Mountains, Harbours, Lakes, Rivers, and Seas; Its Animals, Vegetables, Minerals and Famous Fishery for Pearls The year 1717 began in the midst of the solicitudes and cares mentioned in the preceding volume. The indefatigable Salva-Tierra was now stooping beneath a weight of years and disorders; the stone, with which he had been long afflicted, became more violent; but his zeal would not allow him to remit his useful labours, except when he was not able to stand, and even then he took care to direct every particular with the greatest cars and attention. It was however too soon conspicuous, that his labours drew near their period. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
