Book excerpt: Bridgetown Cemetery, located in Hamilton County, Ohio's Green Township, was established in 1864 as the First German Protestant Cemetery with seven and a half acres along Cleves Pike. This cemetery was, from the beginning, a community cemetery, a final resting place for many of the township citizens who could not spend the time traveling across the rough county roads by horse and wagon to one of the larger public cemeteries located closer to the city of Cincinnati. In 1871, the cemetery donated a half-acre of land to the First German Protestant Church for their building. Many notable local politicians from Green Township, Cheviot, and western Hamilton County chose the cemetery for their final resting place. In 1939, the cemetery bought the Schaeperklaus farm directly to the north, bringing the total land to twenty-two acres. Since the new property has been developed and opened in 1961, the cemetery has been the non-denominational last resting place of choice by those seeking to remain close to their suburban, western Hamilton County roots. This book celebrates the history, heritage, and story of the over 150-year-old Bridgetown Cemetery, and its journey from a seven and a half acre rural cemetery, to a twenty-two acre non-denominational cemetery that mimics the suburban landscape it is situated within. The images of Noah’s arche, king Salomon’s maritime activities or the miracle of the parting of the Red Sea immediately come into mind, however, only illustrate a few aspects of Jewish maritime activities. Consequently, the relations of Jews and the sea has to be seen in a much broader spatial and temporal framework in order to understand the overall importance of maritime spaces in Jewish history and culture. Almost sixty years after Samuel Tolkowsky’s pivotal study on maritime Jewish history and culture and the publication of his book “They Took to the Sea” in 1964, this volume of PaRDeS seeks to follow these ideas, revisit Jewish history and culture from different maritime perspectives and shed new light on current research in the field, which brings together Jewish and maritime studies. The articles in this volume therefore reflect a wide range of topics and illustrate how maritime perspectives can enrich our understanding of Jewish history and culture and its entanglement with the sea – especially in modern times. They study different spaces and examine their embedded narratives and functions. They follow in one way or another the discussions which evolved in the last decades, focused on the importance of spatial dimensions and opened up possibilities for studying the production and construction of spaces, their influences on cultural practices and ideas, as well as structures and changes of social processes. The parish had three separate cemeteries: the churchyard cemetery and Centre Burial Ground were for whites, but the Northern Burial Ground was officially consecrated for nonwhites in 1826 by the Bishop of Jamaica. In Honoring Ancestors in Sacred Space, Grace Turner posits that the African-Bahamian community intentionally established this separate cemetery in order to observe non-European burial customs. Analyzing the landscape and artifacts found at the site, Turner shows how the community used this space to maintain a sense of social and cultural belonging despite the power of white planters and the colonial government. Although the Northern Burial Ground was covered by storm surges in the 1920s, and later a sidewalk was built through the site, Turner's fieldwork reveals a wealth of material culture. She points to the cemetery's location near water, trees planted at the heads of graves, personal items left with the dead, and remnants of food offerings as evidence of mortuary practices originating in West and Central Africa. According to Turner, these African-influenced ways of memorializing the dead illustrate W. E. B. Du Bois's idea of "double consciousness"--the experience of existing in two irreconcilable cultures at the same time. Comparing the burial ground with others in Great Britain and the American colonies, Turner demonstrates how Africans in the Atlantic diaspora did not always adopt European customs but often created a separate, parallel world for themselves.
