Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Banks, Bankers,& Banking: In Northumberland, Durham, and North Yorkshire, Illustrating the Commercial Development of the North of England, From 1755 to 1894 The attention of the reader is asked to a few words by way of preface. In the year 1860 Northumberland became the county of my adoption, and very soon after my settlement I was impressed with the wide and varied field that it offered for antiquarian research. I grew deeply interested in the past records of the county, and became personally acquainted with many present day contributors to the pages of local history. There is only one step from admiration to imitation, and soon after becoming a member of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, I began to contribute short papers bearing upon unnoticed local incidents of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The investigations necessary for these purposes led me to notice, that while the books on the shelves of our libraries gave many interesting accounts of the various Trade Guilds in which the city is so exceptionally strong; and the MS. volumes of the "Merchants-adventurers" were full of unpublished records of Hostmen and Boothmen - the merchant princes of their day - no mention was made of Banking, the occupation in which my lot had been cast. The early historians treated of pre-banking days, and the modem writers of history, from some unexplained cause, made the barest possible reference to the bankers. Further search revealed that Newcastle had possessed one of the earliest provincial banks, but there was no written account of it. I therefore contemplated gathering all available particulars of the "Old Bank" of Newcastle, intending to offer the result to the Society of Antiquaries. From Mr. Cuthbert Carr, whose ancestor had founded the bank, I received most generous aid. I also consulted Mr. C. J. Spence, whose father, Mr. Robert Spence, had been a collector of manuscripts and original documents relating to a variety of subjects, amongst others, that of banking. He readily showed me the collection, and generously offered the use of it in any way I thought most desirable. Book excerpt: This substantially expanded new edition of the Guide to the Historical Records of British Banking contains details of over 700 archive collections held in local record offices, university and local libraries and of course, banks. Wider coverage is given to the records of major domestic banks, British-owned overseas banks, merchant banks and discount houses. There are also additional listings of records of long defunct banks. Arranged alphabetically by name, the entries for each bank contain in most cases: · A brief history of the bank to explain numerous name changes. · Information as to where the bank's records are held. · Details of what the records consist of. The entries are set in context by introductory chapters covering the historical structure and function of British banking and the purpose, format and research value of the chief series of historical records commonly found in bank archives. Bank records concern not just banks but the varied activities that they financed. In addition to its contribution to the study of banking history, this monumental reference work facilitates a wider knowledge and understanding of the history of British finance.

Download or read book The Early History of Banking in England (RLE Banking & Finance) written by Richard Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is widely acknowledged as a scholarly and well-documented study of early banking in England. It bridges gaps in the early history of English banking and deals with the operations of the pre-Bank of England bankers, the evolution of English paper money and the remarkable transactions of the early directors of the Bank of England. Although the main body of the book concentrates on the 16th and 17th centuries, the volume includes a brief survey of English banking in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
