Fortunately, however, it has been found possible, after much laborious research, to obtain accurate staflstia from most of the State banks in more extended form. Oficial publications have been consulted for this information in those States having a State banking department. The statistics of the National banks are from the reports of the Comptroller of the Currency, and are full and accurate from the befinning of the system to the present time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Bank of the United States IN this book an effort has been made to write the history of the Second Bank of the United States in its various aspects, laying particular stress, however, upon its relations to politics, and upon its operations as a commercial bank. My thanks are due to the Honorable Craig Biddle, of Philadelphia, the distinguished head of a distinguished family, whose members for over a century and a quarter have won honor in the annals of our country as seamen and soldiers, jurists, bankers, and historians. With a generosity as rare as it is grateful he has permitted free and complete access to the papers of his father, Nicholas Biddle, which still exist in their entirety at his summer home in Andalusia, Pennsylvania. Without this courtesy much of this history of the Bank of the United States could not have been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Banking in Florida, 1828-1954 For three centuries following the discovery of Florida in 1513 there was no institution or organization of a character that would be presently recognized as a commercial bank. The first bank, the Bank of Florida at Tallahassee, was chartered in 1828. There were, however, organizations and institutions which carried on public and private business during the three hundred years of Spanish and English occupations of Florida. The financial his tory of the state in' these periods can be related through the story of the commercial operations of public and private agencies before American acquisition in 1821. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Banking System of the United States and Its Relation to the Money and Business of the Country The exact relations of our banking system to the business prosperity and money of the United States do not seem to be fully com prehended by our people. The writer is a business man, to whom his dealings with banks, in the ordinary course of business, has suggested the preparation of this little volume, in which he discusses that serv ice of banks to the community which to him seems at once the most important, and, at the same time, most commonly ignored. In his judgment there can be no proper understand ing of the monetary problems of the day unless the relation of the bank-credit money of the country to the money of the Govern ment is 'fully comprehended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming Battle: A Complete History of the National Banking Money Power in the United States In this volume the author endeavors to give an accurate history of the present National Bank System of currency, including an account of the first United States Bank, - both of which were borrowed from Great Britain by those statesmen who, like the father of Sir Robert Peel, believed that a national debt was the source of prosperity. It is believed that the facts adduced in the following pages will be productive of some good, in pointing out the immense evils lurking in that system of banking, - a system which has produced panics at will, and which is the active abettor of the stock gamblers, rail road wreckers, and those industrial tyrants of modern times, the enormously overcapitalized and oppressive trusts. It is sought to point out the great dangers of delegat ing purely government powers to these greedy monopo lists, by which they are enabled to organize a money trust, far more tyrannical than all the other combina tions now in existence; and by which they absolutely defy the authority that endowed them with corporate life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Commercial Banking Institutions in the United States The early settlements in America, like all new agricultural communities, were deficient in capital. The colonists knew that they required something for the development of their trade and natural resources which they did not possess, but their attempts to supply this deficiency show that they did not clearly understand their need. Their need was capital, but they fell into the error common.to persons possessing land in a new country. They thought what they needed was merely more money, and accordingly, instead of establishing agencies which might have enabled them to make the best and most systematic use of the limited capital and credit which they did possess, they resorted to what seemed to them a much easier course, the issue of paper money. To these have now been added an introductory chapter, a chapter on com bined reserves or the system of Clearing House loan certificates, and one on the Bank of Amster dam. The whole has been revised and the notices of current history brought down to the present date, and the book is now laid before students and readers with the hope that it may aid in the sys tematic study of a subject, the treatment of which by writers upon economics is generally either too summary or too diffuse for ordinary purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the First National Bank of Chicago: Preceded by Some Account of Early Banking in the United States, Especially in the West and at Chicago The inauguration of the national system was only the first step in the introduction of safe and sound economic theories. Uniformity in banking has inevi tably been a lesson of prime importance to the people. Slowly and almost unconsciously they have been taught that honesty in monetary legislation and abso lute protection against the schemes and projects of unscrupulous speculators are the foundation-stones of material prosperity; starting from these principles, and steadily erecting the superstructure in the same spirit, they have, under these in uences, won the respect and admiration of rival powers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Paper Money and Banking in the United States, Including an Account of Provincial and Continental Paper Money: To Which Is Prefixed an Inquiry Into the Principles of the System A brief exposition of the principles of Banking, was all that the writer originally intended to give. In the first draft of the work, the historical sketch was part of a chapter. It has been extended to its present length, from a belief that a tolerably full account of incidents in the History of American Banking would be acceptable to the reader. If additional illustrations of the nature of the system were wanted, they might be derived from its history in Great' Britain. These, our limits will not permit us to introduce. We have, however, room for a sketch of _the changes of opinion that have taken place in that country, in regard to paper money. Mr. Joplin, in his History of the' Currency Question, after collating different passages in the treatise on The Wealth of Nations, gives the following as a summary of the views of Adam Smith.
