Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is the heart and soul of any place. In the past it had a heart beat, a pulse. Every place, person has a unique story. Grandview Cemetery is located in Bryan, Texas. This cemetery is one of the largest African American burial grounds in Brazos County with over 1000 people buried there. It had very hopeful beginnings with freed slaves, black business owners and veterans of several wars buried there. There has been an African American presence in Bryan, Texas since early history, they played a major role in the development of the city. The current resting place of so many people is filled with garbage, over grown brush, weeds and so much more. The haunting image of Malinda Cunningham inspired the author to tell the stories of the dead, for the dead do tell tales. This book is dedicated to them.
Book Synopsis War Monuments, Museums and Library Collections of 20th Century Conflicts by : Steve Rajtar
Download or read book War Monuments, Museums and Library Collections of 20th Century Conflicts written by Steve Rajtar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique state-by-state directory covers monuments, memorials, museums, markers, statues and library collections that relate to the veterans, weapons, vehicles, airplanes, victims or any other aspect of war in which the United States participated. While a site may have been created before 1900 (such as a fort), there must be some operational or historical tie to a twentieth century conflict to be included here. General collections, such as museums of aviation, are included if they house materials related to a twentieth century conflict. The coverage is so thorough that statues honoring veterans of the Civil War appear if veterans of later wars are on their rosters of honorees. Another example of the comprehensiveness of this compilation is in the inclusion of memorials to victims of war such as the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas. For each site, the following information is given: street address, phone number, website and email address (if applicable), days and hours of operation, admission fees, other necessary information, and a brief description of the site.

Download or read book Public Places written by Carl T. Hyden and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book rhetorically and historically examines the contextual and experiential dimensions of a wide range of public places—from memorials to stadiums—that are rife with political implications. Fourteen public places ranging from the national to local, from 9/11 memorials to a baseball park are analyzed. The authors investigate the histories of these public spaces, examine their designs, and discuss their political implications in order to outline their role within the public sphere. This book begins with a loose theoretical framework for understanding public places as rhetorically drawn from extant scholarship, and concludes with a systematic means of exploring the allocation of power by public places. Recommended for scholars of communication studies, rhetoric, political science, and architecture.
Book Synopsis Pennsylvania in Public Memory by : Carolyn Kitch
Download or read book Pennsylvania in Public Memory written by Carolyn Kitch and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What stories do we tell about America’s once-great industries at a time when they are fading from the landscape? Pennsylvania in Public Memory attempts to answer that question, exploring the emergence of a heritage culture of industry and its loss through the lens of its most representative industrial state. Based on news coverage, interviews, and more than two hundred heritage sites, this book traces the narrative themes that shape modern public memory of coal, steel, railroading, lumber, oil, and agriculture, and that collectively tell a story about national as well as local identity in a changing social and economic world.
Download or read book OH! SUSANNAH written by Gary Beckley and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was it really like living as a woman in rural Ohio before, during, and after the Civil War? Beckley's grandfather's grandfather was the son of an unpretentious woman who did just that. Unknowingly, she became a family matriarch; and through the use of family documents handed down over the generations, along with governmental archives, and courthouse documents, Beckley is able to reconstruct her life. His research leads him to overgrown vacant lots, dilapidated cemeteries, and down many dusty gravel roads between Ohio and Kentucky, where on the 156th anniversary of the Perrysville Battle, he lies on the ridge where his distant ancestor's brother dies in combat. No effort is spared to reveal the emotion, life, and times of this woman who is long forgotten and yet one who should be forever remembered, thanked, and loved for her devotion to her family.
