Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief covers the technical material related to large scale hierarchical classification (LSHC). HC is an important machine learning problem that has been researched and explored extensively in the past few years. In this book, the authors provide a comprehensive overview of various state-of-the-art existing methods and algorithms that were developed to solve the HC problem in large scale domains. Several challenges faced by LSHC is discussed in detail such as: 1. High imbalance between classes at different levels of the hierarchy 2. Incorporating relationships during model learning leads to optimization issues 3. Feature selection 4. Scalability due to large number of examples, features and classes 5. Hierarchical inconsistencies 6. Error propagation due to multiple decisions involved in making predictions for top-down methods The brief also demonstrates how multiple hierarchies can be leveraged for improving the HC performance using different Multi-Task Learning (MTL) frameworks. The purpose of this book is two-fold: 1. Help novice researchers/beginners to get up to speed by providing a comprehensive overview of several existing techniques. 2. Provide several research directions that have not yet been explored extensively to advance the research boundaries in HC. New approaches discussed in this book include detailed information corresponding to the hierarchical inconsistencies, multi-task learning and feature selection for HC. Its results are highly competitive with the state-of-the-art approaches in the literature.

Book excerpt: Multilevel decision theory arises to resolve the contradiction between increasing requirements towards the process of design, synthesis, control and management of complex systems and the limitation of the power of technical, control, computer and other executive devices, which have to perform actions and to satisfy requirements in real time. This theory rises suggestions how to replace the centralised management of the system by hierarchical co-ordination of sub-processes. All sub-processes have lower dimensions, which support easier management and decision making. But the sub-processes are interconnected and they influence each other. Multilevel systems theory supports two main methodological tools: decomposition and co-ordination. Both have been developed, and implemented in practical applications concerning design, control and management of complex systems. In general, it is always beneficial to find the best or optimal solution in processes of system design, control and management. The real tendency towards the best (optimal) decision requires to present all activities in the form of a definition and then the solution of an appropriate optimization problem. Every optimization process needs the mathematical definition and solution of a well stated optimization problem. These problems belong to two classes: static optimization and dynamic optimization. Static optimization problems are solved applying methods of mathematical programming: conditional and unconditional optimization. Dynamic optimization problems are solved by methods of variation calculus: Euler Lagrange method; maximum principle; dynamical programming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of these lectures is to tri gger the interest of the restless under graduate student of physical, mathematical, engineering, or biological sciences in the new and exciting multidisciplinary area of the evolution of "large-scale" dynamical systems. This text grew out of a synthesis of rather heterogeneous mate rial that I presented on various occasions and in different contexts. For example, from lectures given since 1972 to first- and final-year undergraduate and first year graduate students at the School of Engineering of the University of Patras and from informal seminars offered to an international group of graduate and post doctoral students and faculty members at the University of Stuttgart in the aca demic year 1982-1983. Those who search for rigor or even formality in this book are bound to be rather disappointed. My intention is to start from "scratch" if possible, keeping the rea soning heuristic and tied as closely as possible to physical intuition; I assume as prerequisites just basic knowledge of (classical) physics (at the level of the Berkeley series or the Feynman lectures), calculus, and some elements of probabil ity theory. This does not mean that I intended to write an easy book, but rather to eliminate any difficulty for an eager reader who, in spite of incomplete for malistic training, would like to become acquainted with the physical ideas and con cepts underlying the evolution and dynamics of complex systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first reference of its kind in the rapidly emerging field of computational approachs to materials research, this is a compendium of perspective-providing and topical articles written to inform students and non-specialists of the current status and capabilities of modelling and simulation. From the standpoint of methodology, the development follows a multiscale approach with emphasis on electronic-structure, atomistic, and mesoscale methods, as well as mathematical analysis and rate processes. Basic models are treated across traditional disciplines, not only in the discussion of methods but also in chapters on crystal defects, microstructure, fluids, polymers and soft matter. Written by authors who are actively participating in the current development, this collection of 150 articles has the breadth and depth to be a major contributor toward defining the field of computational materials. In addition, there are 40 commentaries by highly respected researchers, presenting various views that should interest the future generations of the community. Book excerpt: This volume contains almost all of the papers that were presented at the Workshop on Stochastic Theory and Control that was held at the Univ- sity of Kansas, 18–20 October 2001. This three-day event gathered a group of leading scholars in the ?eld of stochastic theory and control to discuss leading-edge topics of stochastic control, which include risk sensitive control, adaptive control, mathematics of ?nance, estimation, identi?cation, optimal control, nonlinear ?ltering, stochastic di?erential equations, stochastic p- tial di?erential equations, and stochastic theory and its applications. The workshop provided an opportunity for many stochastic control researchers to network and discuss cutting-edge technologies and applications, teaching and future directions of stochastic control. Furthermore, the workshop focused on promoting control theory, in particular stochastic control, and it promoted collaborative initiatives in stochastic theory and control and stochastic c- trol education. The lecture on “Adaptation of Real-Time Seizure Detection Algorithm” was videotaped by the PBS. Participants of the workshop have been involved in contributing to the documentary being ?lmed by PBS which highlights the extraordinary work on “Math, Medicine and the Mind: Discovering Tre- ments for Epilepsy” that examines the e?orts of the multidisciplinary team on which several of the participants of the workshop have been working for many years to solve one of the world’s most dramatic neurological conditions. Invited high school teachers of Math and Science were among the part- ipants of this professional meeting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tribute to 40 years of contributions by Professor Mo Jamshidi who is a well known and respected scholar, researcher, and educator. Mo Jamshidi has spent his professional career formalizing and extending the field of large-scale complex systems (LSS) engineering resulting in educating numerous graduates specifically, ethnic minorities. He has made significant contributions in modeling, optimization, CAD, control and applications of large-scale systems leading to his current global role in formalizing system of systems engineering (SoSE), as a new field. His books on complex LSS and SoSE have filled a vacuum in cyber-physical systems literature for the 21st Century. His contributions to ethnic minority engineering education commenced with his work at the University of New Mexico (UNM, Tier-I Hispanic Serving Institution) in 1980 through a NASA JPL grant. Followed by several more major federal grants, he formalized a model for educating minorities, called VI-P Pyramid where K-12 students(bottom of pyramid) to doctoral (top of pyramid) students form a seamless group working on one project. Upper level students mentor lower ones on a sequential basis. Since 1980, he has graduated over 114 minority students consisting of 62 Hispanics, 34 African Americans., 15 Native Americans, and 3 Pacific Islanders. This book contains contributed chapters from colleagues, and former and current students of Professor Jamshidi. Areas of focus are: control systems, energy and system of systems, robotics and soft computing.
