Book excerpt: The STAR Collaboration proposes to construct a state-of-the-art microvertex detector, the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT), utilizing active pixel sensors and silicon strip technology. The HFT will significantly extend the physics reach of the STAR experiment for precision measurement of the yields and spectra of particles containing heavy quarks. This will be accomplished through topological identification of D mesons by reconstruction of their displaced decay vertices with a precision of approximately 50 mu m in p+p, d+A, and A+A collisions. The HFT consists of 4 layers of silicon detectors grouped into two sub-systems with different technologies, guaranteeing increasing resolution when tracking from the TPC and the Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) towards the vertex of the collision. The Intermediate Silicon Tracker (IST), consisting of two layers of single-sided strips, is located inside the SSD. Two layers of Silicon Pixel Detector (PIXEL) are inside the IST. The PIXEL detectors have the resolution necessary for a precision measurement of the displaced vertex. The PIXEL detector will use CMOS Active Pixel Sensors (APS), an innovative technology never used before in a collider experiment. The APSsensors are only 50 mu m thick and at a distance of only 2.5 cm from the interaction point. This opens up a new realm of possibilities for physics measurements. In particular, a thin detector (0.28percent radiation length per layer) in STAR makes it possible to do the direct topological reconstruction of open charm hadrons down to very low pT by the identification of the charged daughters of the hadronic decay.

Book excerpt: This project is in the area of Relativistic Nuclear collisions and the commissioning of a new silicon vertex detector, the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) in the STAR experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). BNL hosts RHIC, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the world’s most advanced dedicated heavy ion and polarized proton accelerator facility. Heavy Ion collisions at RHIC provide a unique probe into the understanding of several aspects of the behavior of nuclear, i.e. strongly inter- acting, matter. Among the many insights that can be provided is the description of parton interaction inside the hot and dense medium produced in the early stages of a collision. It also allows us to search for evidence for a phase transition in nuclear matter, a phase where partons [quarks and gluons] can move freely over an extended volume. Production of heavy quarks in high-energy nuclear collisions at RHIC occurs mainly during the initial collisions where energetic gluon and quark interactions can create heavy quarks. Thus, heavy flavor provides an ideal probe in studying the hot and dense medium created in the early phases of high-energy nuclear collisions. A detailed study of heavy flavor is essential to better understand the parton dynamics and select among competing theoretical approaches, however, precise measurements of heavy flavor are diffcult to obtain due to relatively low production rates and short lifetimes of heavy flavor hadrons. The combinatorial background in nuclear collisions makes the measurement of heavy flavor a challenging task. One approach to dramatically reduce the combinatorial background by several orders of magnitude is to separate the heavy-flavor hadron’s decay vertex from the background. This is done with the help of high resolution vertex detectors. The Heavy Flavor Tracker upgrade for the STAR experiment, which made its debut during the year 2014 RHIC run (Run14), greatly improved the experiment’s track pointing capabilities making STAR an ideal detector for heavy flavor studies. The HFT consists of three subsystems, each deploying a different silicon technology. In the heart of HFT there are two layers of 400 thin silicon pixel sensors, each sensor having about one million individual pixels. The HFT is used to extend the tracks reconstructed in the Time Projection Chamber towards the event vertex, increasing at the same time their pointing resolution from a few millimeters down to about 30 microns. The achieved resolution allow us to fully reconstruct the heavy flavor hadron’s decay vertex. In this Thesis we present work and results on HFT calibration issues using a sample of the first data taken with HFT, the Run14 data set. We will focus on event vertex resolution, alignment, particle identification and selection, and track pointing resolution. We also compare our results with previous analyses and the design goals of HFT.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research field of this work is experimental nuclear physics. I use data taken with the Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC (STAR) experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), an accelerator facility located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Long Island, NY. RHIC accelerates beams of protons, light and heavy ions (e.g. Au nuclei) to relativistic velocities and collides them. The collisions compress and heat the nuclear matter to very high temperatures and densities, over one trillion degrees Celsius. Under such conditions a phase transition might occur in nuclear matter, a transition, where quarks and gluons become de-confined, i.e. free to move around, forming the so-called Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). The study of the properties of QGP, its properties and dynamics, provide a deeper understanding of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD), the theory of strong force, and the conditions in the early universe. A key finding by the experiments at RHIC is the unexpected strong suppression of heavy flavor at high transverse momentum values in Au+Au relative to elementary proton-proton collisions. Heavy quarks are mainly produced during the early stages of the collision when the most energetic interactions occur. The suppression of heavy flavor particles is caused by their interaction with the produced medium, as they traverse it. Charm and bottom quark production can be used as a tool to better probe the matter created during the early phases of the collision. The available theoretical models at that time under-predicted the observed suppression. In order to better understand the observed phenomenon and the details of the interaction between heavy flavor quarks and the hot nuclear medium, precision measurements of mesons containing charm or bottom quarks needed to be performed by the experiments. Heavy flavor mesons are unstable particles and most of them decay weakly within the first millimeter from the production vertex. Their relative low production rates, low branching ratios (B.R.) to useful channels and short lifetimes (ctau), e.g. D0 -> K¿ + pi (B.R. = 3.89% and ctau = 123μm) makes their reconstruction a challenging task. One needs a very-high precision vertex detector in order to separate the decay products from the thousands of particles produced in the collision. The STAR collab- oration built such a detector, the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) with state-of-the-art silicon pixel technology. The HFT gives us the track pointing precision required to efficiently reconstruct charm and bottom meson decay vertices from background. The work in this Thesis is concentrated around the track pointing performance of HFT, sometimes called DCA (Distance of Closest Approach). More specifically we studied the HFT performance using data taken during its first physics run, Run14, that took place in 2014. We present and discuss the details of our analysis methods and the obtained results. We demonstrate that the HFT achieved and exceeded its original design goals in terms of track pointing resolution.

Book excerpt: This thesis covers several important topics relevant to our understanding of quark-gluon plasma. It describes measurement of the third-order harmonic flow using two-particle correlations and isolation of flow and non-flow contributions to particle correlations in gold-gold collisions. The work also investigates long-range longitudinal correlations in small systems of deuteron-gold collisions. The former is related to the hydrodynamic transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in gold-gold collisions. The latter pertains to the question whether hydrodynamics is applicable to small systems, such as deuteron-gold collisions, and whether the quark-gluon plasma can be formed in those small-system collisions. The work presented in this thesis was conducted with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where the center-of-mass energy of both collision systems was a factor of 100 larger than the rest mass of the colliding nuclei. The results contained in this thesis are highly relevant to our quest for deeper understanding of quantum chromodynamics. The results obtained challenge the interpretation of previous works from several other experiments on small systems, and provoke a fresh look at the physics of hydrodynamics and particle correlations pertinent to high energy nuclear collisions.

Book excerpt: This exhaustive survey is the result of a four year effort by many leading researchers in the field to produce both a readable introduction and a yardstick for the many upcoming experiments using heavy ion collisions to examine the properties of nuclear matter. The books falls naturally into five large parts, first examining the bulk properties of strongly interacting matter, including its equation of state and phase structure. Part II discusses elementary hadronic excitations of nuclear matter, Part III addresses the concepts and models regarding the space-time dynamics of nuclear collision experiments, Part IV collects the observables from past and current high-energy heavy-ion facilities in the context of the theoretical predictions specific to compressed baryonic matter. Part V finally gives a brief description of the experimental concepts. The book explicitly addresses everyone working or planning to enter the field of high-energy nuclear physics.
