Carter shares openly about her difficult past in her touching memoir, A Heart to Live in Troubled Times. Gloria first gave her life to Jesus at nine, but she was unprepared for the challenges she would later endure. The pressures of being a teenager and the constant struggles between her parents drove her into the streets of Los Angeles, where she spent the next thirteen years in and out of drug rehabilitation centers. After what seemed a lifetime of trouble, she decided to end it all. Following several unsuccessful attempts at suicide, she began to cry out to God for help. Gloria expresses her turmoil through heartfelt poems, which complement narratives of her past. A Heart to Live in Troubled Times offers a compelling reminder of where joy can be found from one who has battled for hope.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD--BIOGRAPHY Elie Wiesel was a towering presence on the world stage--a Nobel laureate, activist, adviser to world leaders, and the author of more than forty books, including the Oprah's Book Club selection Night. But when asked, Wiesel always said, "I am a teacher first." In fact, he taught at Boston University for nearly four decades, and with this book, Ariel Burger--devoted prot g , apprentice, and friend--takes us into the sacred space of Wiesel's classroom. There, Wiesel challenged his students to explore moral complexity and to resist the dangerous lure of absolutes. In bringing together never-before-recounted moments between Wiesel and his students, Witness serves as a moral education in and of itself--a primer on educating against indifference, on the urgency of memory and individual responsibility, and on the role of literature, music, and art in making the world a more compassionate place. Burger first met Wiesel at age fifteen; he became his student in his twenties, and his teaching assistant in his thirties. In this profoundly thought-provoking and inspiring book, Burger gives us a front-row seat to Wiesel's remarkable exchanges in and out of the classroom, and chronicles the intimate conversations between these two men over the decades as Burger sought counsel on matters of intellect, spirituality, and faith, while navigating his own personal journey from boyhood to manhood, from student and assistant, to rabbi and, in time, teacher. "Listening to a witness makes you a witness," said Wiesel. Ariel Burger's book is an invitation to every reader to become Wiesel's student, and witness.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Life by : Shane Claiborne
Download or read book Rethinking Life written by Shane Claiborne and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on Scripture, church history, and his own story, Shane Claiborne explores how a passion for social justice issues surrounding life and death--such as war, gun ownership, the death penalty, racial injustice, abortion, poverty, and the environment--intersects with our faith as we advocate for life in its totality. Many of us wonder how to think about and act on issues of life and death beyond abortion and the death penalty--yet the heated debates in our churches and the confusion of our own hearts sometimes feel overwhelming. What does a balanced, Christian view of what it means to be "pro-life" really look like? Combining stories, theological reflection, and a little wit with a Southern accent, activist Shane Claiborne explores the battle between life and death that goes back to the Garden of Eden. Shane draws on his childhood growing up in the Bible Belt, his own change of perspective on how to advocate for life, and his years of working on behalf of all people to help us: Learn from the Bible and the early church about valuing life Deepen our understanding of what a pro-life stance can look like Discover ways to discuss topics that are dividing our culture and churches Find encouragement when we feel politically homeless Renew our hope that there is a good way forward, even in difficult times We need a new movement that stands up for life--without exceptions. This moving and incredibly timely book creates a larger framework for thinking about God's love and our faith as we embrace a consistent ethic that values human life from womb to tomb.

Book Synopsis Spirit Vs. Flesh by : Dr. Pamala Wilson
Download or read book Spirit Vs. Flesh written by Dr. Pamala Wilson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us can one day realize that we have been spending our lives walking in sin. The realization can come suddenly, or it can appear to us over some time, but what we do next can mean the world—even our eternity. In Spirit vs. Flesh, author Dr. Pam Wilson shares her personal testimony of immediate deliverance and her life of victory in the battle between spirit and flesh. The burden God has put on her heart to help other Christians learn how to overcome the constant battle between our flesh and our spirit is the passion and motive behind her writing. The message she confronts head on is the reason why we as Christians are living a life of hypocrisy and are both “in and of the world.” We are not living differently than the world and making a difference for the kingdom of God because we are not revealing God in the way we live our lives. Yet by accepting Christ and equipping ourselves for spiritual warfare, we can be victorious in the battle between the spirit and the flesh!
Book Synopsis Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled (Foreword by Elizabeth Catherwood and Ann Beatt) by : Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Download or read book Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled (Foreword by Elizabeth Catherwood and Ann Beatt) written by Martyn Lloyd-Jones and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2009-06-08 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1951, with the Second World War not long over and the menace of the Cold War generating anxiety in the West, Martyn Lloyd-Jones preached eight sermons on John 14:1-12 at Westminster Chapel in London. These sermons, presented in Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled, were intended to comfort, strengthen, and build up Christians in their "most holy faith" and to bring unbelievers to a knowledge of the only way men and women can face matters of life and death. Lloyd-Jones went through these verses carefully, showing that the way to deal with our fears is first to recognize and confront them and then to realize that the answer is only to be found in the great and unchanging truths of the gospel. Pastors, Lloyd-Jones readers, and anyone needing encouragement will benefit from this work by one of the twentieth century's foremost preachers.
