Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1872 edition. Excerpt: ...Black and White Kingfisher. Abundant throughout Egypt and Nubia. It may be daily seen, generally in pairs, perched upon the steep bank or the stranded roots of some tree that has been carried down by the river. At times, with beak directed downwards, it hovers over the water, into which it darts boldly after its finny prey; if unsuccessful, it will repeat the performance until it captures a fish, when it flies to the bank to enjoy the repast at its ease. Sometimes it flies slowly close over the surface of the water. It begins breeding about the end of March, when it drills deep holes in the steep river-banks to place its nest in. Head crested. The whole of the upper plumage, with the wiiigs and tad pure black and white, sharply defined; under surface of the body pure silvery white, with the following markings: --in the adult female, only one large black patch on each side of the upper part of the breast, which nearly meets in the centre, and a few black marks on the flanks; the male has in addition an entire narrow black collar across the chest; in not quite adult plumage some of the feathers on the neck and crop are narrowly edged with dull black. Beak and legs black, irides dark brown. Entire length 115 inches; culmen 23; wing, carpus to tip, 55; tarsus 05. Fig. Sharpe's Monogr. Alced. pi. 19. Fam. CORACIADJE. 146. Coracias Garrula, Linn. Roller. This is only a bird of passage in Egypt and Nubia, arriving on its way north about the end of April. I first met with it at Koos on the 26th of that month; and two days later I killed three out of a party of four that I saw near Dendera. In the spring of the year they are not rare in Egypt. They are rather shy; but, owing to a fancy they appear to have for certain clumps of trees, they may be..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handlist of the Birds of Egypt Since the late Captain G. E. Shelley published his "Handbook on the Birds of Egypt" in 1872 no scientific work dealing entirely with the avifauna of this country has been produced. Shelley enumerates 352 species as inhabiting Egypt, but many of these he rightly casts some doubt on and only includes them on the authority of older writers, and one - the ostrich - is extinct in the country. In 1875 Mr. J. II. Gurney spent six months bird-collecting in Egypt, and the results of his trip were published in 1876 in his excellent work entitled "Rambles of a Naturalist," in which the author treats of 220 species from Egypt. Short papers have since been published in the "Ibis" and other publications dealing with the birds of Egypt, but it is unnecessary to enumerate them here. For the past thirteen years I have been collecting specimens and notes with the intention of publishing a handlist on the avifauna of the country. Shortly after the outbreak of war, owing to the presence of many persons in the E.E.F. interested in ornithology, and the consequent stream of questions re the identification of birds seen by them, it was decided to bring out as complete a list as possible of the birds of Egypt, giving the status and adding a short description of each form. This was practically completed three years ago, but owing to shortage of paper in the country it was found impossible to put this book in the press until quite recently. This handlist will, I trust, be a help to my brother ornithologists in this and in other countries. About 437 forms of birds are admitted as inhabiting or having been recorded from Egypt. Of these the majority arc migrants, and some few very rare stragglers. Apart from records taken from formerly published works, the notes in this list arc based on a collection of about 4,000 skins which I have brought together during a thirteen years' residence in Egypt and which are now in the Zoological Museum at Giza. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as a sumptuously produced and finely illustrated outstanding contribution to ancient Egyptian studies, this facsimile reprint of Patrick Houlihan’s 1986 comprehensive study makes a welcome return in the Oxbow Classics in Egyptology series. Animals of all kinds are amply illustrated in Egyptian art, none more so than birds, in both secular and religious contexts and in hieroglyphic scripts. A great variety of bird species has for millennia made twice yearly migrations passing over Egypt, which is also an important overwintering area for many. These migrant birds, together with indigenous species were an abundant and easily exploited source of food for ancient Egyptians, for domestication and status display. Tomb scenes displaying birds provided as food for the deceased are abundant, as are procession scenes of offering with bearers bringing gifts of fowl. Many birds also had religious associations. Houlihan provides a systematic and unparalleled survey of all the bird life depicted by the ancient Egyptians in art and hieroglyphic writing, some 72 species (plus bats), with a list of known mummified species, and discussions on their religious and secular associations and many illustrations. Their present-day distributions are compared with that known from the time of the Pharoahs. A checklist of the birds of modern Egypt is provided by Steven Goodman.
