Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with liverworts and hornworts of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Biogeographically it covers the Mediterranean and Eurosiberian regions. This handbook comprises identification keys to generic and specific level with corresponding illustrations. Each genus includes a short morphological description referring only to the species that appear in the present work. In monospecific genera the species name follows the description; if plurispecific a key to species is given. We recognised 286 species, which represent 68% of the European hepatic flora.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference provides information about recent trends in bryology in parts of India, tropical rainforests and arctic regions. Bryophytes are the earliest land plants and quite fascinating in their overall diversity. All through its history, bryological study has contributed considerably to the field of plant sciences, for instance, the discovery of sex chromosomes in plants. The study of bryophytes is fundamental to our understanding of land plant evolution, and the latest progress in molecular phylogenetics and genomics have given researchers a clear depiction of land colonization of plants and subsequent terrestrial progression. Ecologically, the importance of bryophytes for the participation in biogeochemical cycles, in particular carbon cycle is now appreciated. Further, there has been an escalating interest in the conservation biology of bryophytes. The contributors have put forward holistic information regarding current research scenario of bryology in a range of environments to readers learning about research in applied bryology. The compilation of reviews presents reported findings related to various aspects of the subject, such as, conservation, diversity, tissue culture, bio-monitoring, computational bryology, molecular bryology, and species. Botanists and bryologists will receive updated information that will be valuable for their research work. The reader-friendly text is also suitable for beginners in applied plant science. Recent Advances in Botanical Science provides updated research and reviews on topics related to plant biology, genetics, taxonomy and ecology. The series is a useful resource for readers interested in applied plant science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This endeavour is aimed to be comprehensive and innovative. It covers the entire course of reading in Bryology. After a brief Introduction, there is an account of array of diversity and development of Bryophytes. In three chapters on Liverworts, Hornworts and Mosses, one can find an illustrated and concise account of all representative types. It is followed by comparative morphology. In two chapters on Gametophyte and Sporophyte are unravelled the elements of unity in diversity. Due emphasis has been given to experimental studies. In five chapters are traced the events of life cycle; Spore germination, Protonema differentiation and Gametophyte initiation, Sexuality and Sporophyte development, Regeneration, and Alternation of generations. Experimental studies – a backbone of this book – are not only interesting in a class room but informative to decipher different aspects of differentiation. Finally, there is food for thought in chapters on Cytogenetics and Evolution, and Origin and Fossil History. At the end is an extensive bibliography of old and new Literature, for further reading.

Book excerpt: Bryophyte Biology provides an extensive overview of the hornworts, liverworts, and mosses; diverse groups of land plants that occupy a great variety of habitats throughout the world. This edition covers essential aspects of bryophyte biology, from morphology, physiological ecology and conservation, to speciation, and genomics. Revised classifications incorporate contributions from recent phylogenetic studies. Six new chapters complement fully updated chapters from the original book to provide a completely up-to-date resource. New chapters focus on the contributions of Physcomitrella to plant genomic research, population ecology of bryophytes, mechanisms of drought tolerance, a phylogenomic perspective on land plant evolution, and problems and progress of bryophyte speciation and conservation. Written by leaders in the field, this book offers an authoritative treatment of bryophyte biology, with rich citation of the current literature, suitable for advanced students and researchers.

Book excerpt: Bryophytes were a pivotal step in land plant evolution, and their significance in the regulation of ecosystems and the conservation of biodiversity is becoming increasingly acknowledged. This introductory textbook assumes no prior knowledge of bryophyte biology, making it ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as amateur botanists. The authors expertly summarise the diversity of bryophytes and outline recent advances in our understanding of their evolutionary history, their ecological roles and preferences, their distribution patterns and conservation needs. The text is highly illustrated throughout, with boxed summaries of topics of current relevance in bryophyte biology, and a glossary of technical terms.

In Recent Years There Has Been An Increasing Emphasis On Investigations Concerning The Ultrastructure, Reproductive Biology, Ecology, Morphogenesis, Physiology, Biochemistry And Related Aspects Of Bryophytes. These Themes Have Also Rightfully Found Their Place In The Syllabi At All Levels In Most Universities All Over The Globe. However, The Writing Of Texts In This Area Has Lagged Behind. Since The Literature Is Scattered And At Times Not Easy To Reach, There Is An Urgent Need For A Book Which Deals With The Modern Topics Of Bryology. This Volume Is Intended To Fill This Gap. The Authors Have Tried To Make The Compilation Of The Literature As Up-To-Date As Possible, And The References Cited In The Text Have Been Listed At The End Of Each Chapter For Those Interested In More Details. Most Of The Illustrations Have Been Taken From Recent Research Publications And These Have Not Previously Been Included In Any Book As Far As We Aware. Book excerpt: This book will enrich the readers theoretical knowledge about the fundamental aspects of bryology. There is a great significance of bryophytes in land plant evolution, water retention, prevention of soil erosion, nutrient cycling, nitrogen fixation and pollution monitoring. Considering this, the authors found it necessary to provide a basic guideline to the students to study the bryoflora. The present manual for bryophytes will provide practical guidelines for collection and recording of bryophytes, methodologies for studying it's morphology, morphometry and internal structure, modern approach to bryophytes systematics and characterization of genera, taxonomic importance of spore ornamentation as revealed by the Scanning Electron Microscopy, significance of bryophyte conservation and basic methods of in vitro study. This book was released on 2008 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an illustrated guide to an important component of New Zealand's green plant flora. The liverworts and hornworts, together with the mosses, make up the bryophytes. Liverworts are morphologically a more diverse group than the mosses in that they have both leafy and thallose forms, the leafy forms at times being mistaken for mosses. This volume, the first of three, deals with leafy liverworts, as will Volume 2; Volume 3 will deal with the remainder of the leafy liverworts together with the thallose liverworts and the hornworts. Volume 1 provides keys and descriptions to 211 of the 595 liverwort species, and provides a key to all genera of the largest order, the Jungermanniales. Detailed notes are provided on distribution and habitat, and discussions under the family and genus descriptions place the New Zealand flora in the context of the world liverwort and hornwort flora. To complement the descriptions, 172 black-and-white plates illustrate details of many of the species and 101 colour images illustrate almost all of the 60 genera in this volume. Volume 1 includes a detailed Introduction, which presents a history of exploration of the New Zealand flora; provides a detailed overview of the region's climate, geology, and vegetation; and includes a special contribution on endophytic fungi associates in New Zealand liverworts and their ecological and evolutionary significance. When this three-volume flora is completed, it will be the first flora for these two groups of bryophytes since Hooker's 1864-1867 Handbook of the New Zealand Flora.
