As to the frequency of repetition, we are guided by the following rule: the remedies which produce symptoms on the healthy in a short period of time, repeat at short intervals - minutes and hours; one which takes a long time to produce symptoms, repeat at longer intervals and continue for a longer period of time. AS it is impossible to keep the time Of all rem edies in mind, we give the following: put in class I the gases, volatile salts, and those drugs which act directly upon the nerves; class 2, the earthy salts and those drugs which act upon the blood; class 3, compounds of the first and second classes to be repeated at medium intervals. For auxiliary treatment such as diet, exercise, rest, change of climate, we are guided by the modalities Of the drug, e. G., conditions which are worse from motion, advise rest, etc. As to diet, there is a sad need Of reliable information. Anyone who would write a book on the dietetics of each remedy would bestow a great boon upon the human race. The remedies dis cussed are the polychrests and those Of the others which have been most frequently and successfully used by the author. The latter include those which have been most recently proven and come into use. NO claim is made for anything newer or better than is found in other text-books on materia medica. The method Of presenting the Old is not wholly original. We have gleaned from all our text-books on materia medica but more especially from Allen's Handbook, Clark's Dictionary and Boger's Synoptic Key. We hope that by following the method of grouping the symptoms in their study Of remedies, undergraduates and busy practitioners may become more ac curate and successful prescribers. All I roposed to myself, was, that in making a mistake, one must be nu er a half degree. I do not assert, that within these limits one will always be right. All I can affirm is, that I have not spared either trouble, care, or precaution, to render errors as rare as possible. The plan of this work is easily comprehended, and requires no long explanation. It is divided into seven parts perfectly distinct from each other, and in each of these divisions, to facilitate, inquiry, the systematic order has been as much as possible combined with the alphabetical. Although each part ought to be considered as a complete whole, it never yields, however, more than a part of a symptom, which re ceives its complement from one or many of the other parts. In odontalgia, for example, the seat of the pain is found in the second, the nature of the pain in the third, the exacerbation or diminution of pain, according to time, place, and circumstances, in the sixth; and that which is necessary as an accessory to complete the descri tion of the malady, and warrant the choice of medicaments, must sought for equally in the different chapters. As regards the first part, we wish it to be particularly observed on one hand, that our Materia Medica Pura is no where richer in secondary symptoms than in moral symptoms; and on the other hand, that a great num ber of homeopathists, at the beginning of their career, are in the habit of neglecting or overlooking that part of a complete picture of the malady, or of committing great mistakes. I have there fore thought it would be useful to collect here, under the smallest possible number of rubrics, every thing most essential to facilitate inquiry. The chapter entitled Intellect, (intellectual Faculties), may be, in like manner, considerably simplified, because many phe nomena take their precise signification from another cause; as, for example, the mental alienation from the different moral gradations. F. Allen) did not embrace the whole list of homœopathic remedies. The excellent handbook of Professor Allen contained the greatest number, while the text-books of Drs. Cowperthwaite and Jessen (the latter also a good book for the wants of practitioners) have been found more serviceable in size for daily employment. I accordingly took the text-book of Cowperthwaite as my basis, and added to this a great number of notes, which the author intends to embody in the new edition. The remedies, that were not found by me in the text-book of Cowperthwaite, I in particular brought together to form a text-book of materia medica and therapeutics of the rare homœopathic medicines. A physician, by means of the text-book of Cowperthwaite and with the help of the present Supplement, will now have the whole homœopathic materia medica at his disposal.
