Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book for Visitors to Dehli, and Its Neighbourhood Humayun towards the end of his troubled life, settled at Dehli, where he died (infra, p. And the city was immedi ately seized in the interest of Shah Adi], his Afghan rival. Oil Akbar' s overthrowing the latter, the seat of Government was once more removed to Agra which 13 therefore almost exclu sively a Moghul city, and which continued to be the capital of the empire till Shahjahan removed, for a time at least, to the modern city of Dehli, which he built and called by his own name, Shajahanfibfid. It thus comes to pass that Dehli - un derstauding by the term the parallelogram above referred to is more interesting than Agra, if less beautiful. The very monarch who last chose it as a 'capital dowered the forsaken rival with a treasure which, as it is unique in the world, is quite an agproached by anything at Dehli. But if the latter has no T it offers to the visitor interested in ethnolo in hist ry, and in architecture, a series of records that may float be compared to the stratified annals of geology. With harder work and less enjoyment than 1n Agra, the visitor to Dehli will nevertheless find his mind interested, and his knowledge of men and their works sensibly increased. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agra, Historical Descriptive: With an Account of Akbar and His Court and of the Modern City of Agra Much has, no doubt, been written about Agra by historians and travellers, but beyond Mr. Keene's Handbook to Agm, a meritorious little work, intended chiefly as a guidebook for travellers, there is no book that gives a connected account of this historical city, dealing with its past and present history and its archaeological remains and antiquities in a way which might commend itself to the attention of the student and the traveller, the antiquarian, and the general reader. The inscriptions, too, which form the chief value of the several more important monuments, and help to furnish correct data on which to base the accounts, are entirely omitted, and what is most important seems not to have received adequate attention. Namely, the associa tion of past events with the interesting architectural objects which meet the view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2023-03-03 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other city in the Indian subcontinent can lay claim to having so many lives as Delhi. This book examines Delhi in the politically and culturally dynamic nineteenth century which was marked midway by the 1857 uprising against British colonial rule as a watershed event. Following British occupation, Delhi became a receptacle for encounters between the centuries-old Mughal traditions and the incoming colonial ideal, producing a traditionalism-modernity binary. Employing the built environment lens, the book traces the architectural trajectory of Delhi as it transitioned from the seventeenth-century Mughal Badshahi Shahar (imperial city) first into a culturally hybrid Dilli-Delhi combine of the pre-uprising era and thereafter into a modern British city following the uprising. This transition is presented via four constructs that draw on the traditionalism-modernity binary of Mughal and British Delhi and include Marhoom Dilli (Dead Delhi); Picturesque Delhi; Baaghi Dilli (Insurgent Delhi) and Tamed Delhi. The book goes beyond the nineteenth century to examine the vestiges of Delhi’s four nineteenth-century lives in the present while making a case for their acknowledgement as a cultural asset that can propel the city’s urban development agenda. By bringing together the city’s past and its present as well as addressing its future, the book can count among its readers not just scholars but also those interested in cities and their evolving landscapes.
