Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for Apprenticed Machinists It does not aim to take the place of the excellent engineer's pocket books, already published, some one of which an apprentice should obtain. He should also subscribe for a mechanical paper. Besides skill, an important element of success is a readiness in applying to practical purposes what can be learned in books and in periodicals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sparrett Book for Machinists Apprentices But laying out requires some knowledge of mathe maties, some skill at mechanical drawing, and an acq'uaint ance with machinists' fine tools and shop operations. Attention to details and extreme care are of utmost im portance. Increased labor cost, as well as material wasted because of errors in laying out, are the penalties of mistakes. The apprentice, then, should lose no opportunity to make himself capable of laying out work. Close observa tion of pieces laid out by skilled machinists is one way of becoming/ acquainted with the art. The fortunate apprentice may also have Opportunity to observe a skilled machinist while laying out various jobs. The number of measuring and laying out tools or instruments now purchasable is very great and the ap prentice must become familiar with practically all of them. He must know what he can accomplish with each so that he will instinctively select those best suited to the job in hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apprentice, or First Book: For Mechanics, Machinists and Engineers There being no Elementary treatise on Practical Mechanics in the English language, the present work is designed to supply the deficiency. It may be asked how can this be, while there exist so many elementary treatises on the theory and application of Mechanics, or why not translate, or copy the great French works, as the German and other nations do. To understand the elementary treatises on the theory and application of Mechanics employed as class books in our schools and colleges, requires considerable mathematical skill, and after all, the elementary know ledge acquired is of little value to the practical man. On the general theory of Mechanics, there are also many popular works clear of mathematical formula and serviceable to the general reader, but of no practical value. French elementary writers on practical Mechanics, take for granted that they are writing for those who understand the theory of Mechanics, and when these works are copied or translated, they are far from being elementary. As practical mechanics is based upon what is termed the principle of work, to be able to distinguish with ease, units of work from other units, would greatly facilitate the acquisition of this branch of knowledge; I have, therefore, introduced a new and simple notation to effect this object, which French writers and their copyists have neglected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sparrett Book for Machinists Apprentices Laying out work preliminary to machining is transferring blue-print instructions on to the metal. While the blue-print gives dimensions accurately, without any great precision in the drawing itself, lines laid out on the metal are to be worked to and must therefore be accurate. No one can consider himself a skilled machinist unless he can lay out his own work and, when called upon, lay out work for the less experienced. To become skilled in laying out should be the aim of every apprentice. Possessing this skill gives more opportunity to show ability than the running of a machine. It is a qualification one must have for advanced positions such as toolmaker, foreman, or superintendent. But laying out requires some knowledge of mathematics, some skill at mechanical drawing, and an acquaintance with machinists' fine tools and shop operations. Attention to details and extreme care are of utmost importance. Increased labor cost, as well as material wasted because of errors in laying out, are the penalties of mistakes. The apprentice, then, should lose no opportunity to make himself capable of laying out work. Close observation of pieces laid out by skilled machinists is one way of becoming acquainted with the art. The fortunate apprentice may also have opportunity to observe a skilled machinist while laying out various jobs. The number of measuring and laying out tools or instruments now purchasable is very great and the apprentice must become familiar with practically all of them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine Shop Practice: A Manual for Apprentices and Journeyman Machinists, and for Use in Trade, Industrial and Technical Schools In preparing this text the author has endeavored to present the fundamentals of Machine Shop Practice rather than to produce a complete or advanced treatise. Above all, he has desired to lead the pupil in the shop to think and not merely to do. For this reason, the why of each step or operation is emphasized quite as much as the how. If the apprentice or the trade student can once be imbued with an attitude of thoughtfulness and investigation in connection with his work, his future progress toward skill and efficiency may be regarded as assured. The material is drawn mainly from mimeographed notes which were tried out for over twelve years in the shops of the School of Science and Technology, Pratt Institute. With the desire, however, to meet more closely the needs of the increasing number of secondary technical and industrial schools offering machine shop instruction, the original text in which these notes were published has been carefully revised by Mr. J. A. Chamberlain, Supervisor of Manual Training in the schools of Washington, D. C. It is believed that the value of the book as a practical manual for apprentices and journeyman machinists has in no respect been lessened in this revision, while at the same time the order of treatment and the time demanded for the completion of the work laid down have been brought to a closer agreement with the conditions under which machine work is taught in the secondary school shop. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Students' Illustrated Guide to Practical Draughting: A Series of Practical Instructions for Machinists, Mechanics, Apprentices, and Students at Engineering Establishments and Technical Institutes A machinist cannot do good or rapid work with dull, badly tempered tools, neither can the draughtsman produce fine, creditable drawings with dull, clumsy, badly-jointed and pointed, unadjusted, disproportioned drawing instruments. A few first-class instruments are infinitely more valuable than a great number of inferior ones. Explicitness on this subject is desirable. Beginners in the Study of practical draughting may assure themselves that if there is anv one time more than another when they need good instruments. It is when they commence to learn.
