Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1903 the Cody Road opened, leading travelers from Cody, Wyoming, to Yellowstone National Park. Cheyenne photographer J. E. Stimson traveled the route during its first week in existence, documenting the road for the state of Wyoming's contribution to the 1904 World's Fair. His images of now-famous landmarks like Cedar Mountain, the Shoshone River, the Holy City, Chimney Rock, Sylvan Pass, and Sylvan Lake are some of the earliest existing photgraphs of the route. In 2008, 105 years later, Michael Amundson traveled the same road, carefully duplicating Stimson's iconic original photographs. In Passage to Wonderland, these images are paired side by side and accompanied by a detailed explanation of the land and history depicted. Amundson examines the physical changes along "the most scenic fifty miles in America" and explores the cultural and natural history behind them. This careful analysis of the paired images make Passage to Wonderland more than a "then and now" photography book--it is a unique exploration of the interconnectedness between the Old West and the New West. It will be a wonderful companion for those touring the Cody Road as well as those armchair tourists who can follow the road on Google Earth using the provided GPS coordinates.

Along with fascinating facts and anecdotes, readers will learn of Yellowstone's geyser basins and the frequency of the geysers, out-of-the-way hikes, and flora and fauna. Easy-to-understand scientific explanations and diagrams complement an array of short walks, the right season for camping, and the park's campgrounds and facilities. Updated road logs highlight more than 100 historical points of interest, including the often misidentified locale from which artist Thomas Moran painted his "Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone" masterpiece and where five stagecoach robberies occurred along the Grand Loop Road. New text examines areas that have changed in recent years, including the reconstructed Canyon-to-Dunraven Pass and the newly completed North Rim Drive at the Grand Canyon. Additionally, numerous new photographs feature historical and contemporary images.

Janet Chapple shares her tips to pack for your trip, spot wildlife, see the best views, catch geyser eruptions, stay safe, and escape the crowds. The author's passion for the park, which began when her parents worked at Old Faithful Inn in the early twentieth century, shines throughout. Whether you want to hike in the geyser basins and forests, drive the mountain passes, ride horseback, or take a boat out on the lake, the mile-by-mile road logs prepare you. The description is enlivened by entertaining historical anecdotes. This sixth edition, fully updated for 2020 by editor Beth Chapple and geologist Jo-Ann Sherwin, includes which geysers and hot springs are active, the new overlooks at Grand Prismatic Spring and the south rim of the canyon, a new time line of the geology, and explanations of the geological forces like lava flows and the Yellowstone hot spot. The book is in full color with 38 new and revised maps. Charts of the facilities and a field guide to the wildlife and wildflowers round out this comprehensive guide to America's first national park. After the first edition won Gold in the Travel Guides category in ForeWord Magazine's 2002 Book of the Year Awards, later editions won Silver in the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards in 2010 and 2018.

Book excerpt: When the scenery out the car window is breathtaking, drivers and their passengers want maximum gaze time. Our popular road guide, completely revised and updated, features contiguous text and maps so visitors can follow the maps and descriptions as they drive along. The book's efficient design eliminates having to flip back and forth between maps and text and count odometer mileage--a major frustration of other road guides. This indispensable guide tracks the major roads within Yellowstone National Park and its neighbor Grand Teton National Park. Detailed topographical maps point out where to look for wildlife such as mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, and bear; geological formations; historical sites; and plants. Also included are locations for camping, fishing, and boating within the Wyoming parks. Several pages of maps and accompanying text cover the popular Grand Loop Road, describing the formation of the 308-foot Lower Falls, Yellowstone Canyon's best views from Artist's Point, and how Mud Volcano lives up to its name. This road guide not only helps visitors find their way around but also makes the trip richer, more interesting, and more enjoyable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of years ago, the North American continent was dragged over the world's largest continental hotspot, a huge column of hot and molten rock rising from the Earth's interior that traced a 50-mile wide, 500-mile-long path northeastward across Idaho. Generating cataclysmic volcanic eruptions and large earthquakes, the hotspot helped lift the Yellowstone Plateau to more than 7,000 feet and pushed the northern Rockies to new heights, forming unusually large glaciers to carve the landscape. It also created the jewel of the U.S. national park system: Yellowstone. Meanwhile, forces stretching apart the western U.S. created the mountainous glory of Grand Teton National Park. These two parks, with their majestic mountains, dazzling geysers, and picturesque hot springs, are windows into the Earth's interior, revealing the violent power of the dynamic processes within. Smith and Siegel offer expert guidance through this awe-inspiring terrain, bringing to life the grandeur of these geologic phenomena as they reveal the forces that have shaped--and continue to shape--the greater Yellowstone-Teton region. Over seventy illustrations--including fifty-two in full color--illuminate the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, while two final chapters provide driving tours of the parks to help visitors enjoy and understand the regions wonders. Fascinating and informative, this book affords us a striking new perspective on Earth's creative forces.
