Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rugged individuals armed with hand tools, sweat, and ambition began building covered bridges in Oregon during the mid-1850s. These bridge builders often camped out at remote sites, living off the land or contracting with local farmers for food. Early owners of covered bridges financed construction by charging tolls--3¢ for a sheep, 5¢ for a horse and rider, and 10¢ for a team of horses and wagon. In the early 20th century, the state provided standard bridge and truss designs to each county, and most of the resulting structures incorporated the Howe truss. With the abundance of Douglas fir and the shortage of steel during the world wars, the construction of wooden covered bridges continued well into the 1950s, mainly in the Willamette Valley. During the 1920s, Oregon boasted more than 350 covered bridges.

Book excerpt: The remaining 52 covered bridges in the state of Oregon. Complete with page numbers, maps, directions, crossroads, and GPS coordinates, this book has a colored photo of each of the bridges and depicts the history that exists in the state. I am not a historian, but I wanted to include a little bit of information pertaining to each bridge. This is information was obtained from a variety of searches, books and asking questions of the people that live in the area. By either exploring the bridges as we did or just taking them one at a time when you have the time. My hope is that you enjoy exploring and finding these hidden treasures as much as I did.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covered Bridges are historic pieces of American and Canadian rural history, gracing the countryside from Oregon to Tennessee and from California to New Brunswick and across Canada. In this lavishly illustrated volume Joseph D. Conwill recounts the rich, romantic history of covered bridges as they developed from early timber bridges, born out of the traditions of Medieval times, into modernized structures designed for the motorized traffic of the early twentieth century. Reflecting on the efforts to keep covered bridges in service as the face of the rural landscape is transformed, and the challenge of preserving their historic character while making them safe for modern traffic, Conwill guides the reader across the diverse range of covered bridges to be found throughout the North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oregon Covered Bridges is one such project. For my wife and I we just took day trips and visited covered bridges in our area, soon it grew and became a journey. It started in October 2004 visiting the coverered bridgs of Cottage Grove and ended with a visit to Cedar Crossing in February2007. The project turn to this book, a quick view of the bridges, the history, facts of covered bridges. Many people leave their state to take a vacation, never really seeing where they live, this book is a reminder that we here in Oregon have a lot and should be seen. It is also a chance to bring visitors to our state, to see these covered bridges. There on the backroads and these roads really show off Oregon. It is a "Coffee Table" book, pick up and enjoy the pictures, the reading is light. Need to "Stop and Smell the Roses", take a break from this fast pace life, this is what this book was meant to do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covered bridges are gaining public attention as states and counties make investments in their repair and preservation, offer tours of them, and build new ones. This work documents all extant covered bridges in the southeastern United States: Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia. (Mississippi has none.) The book is arranged by state, then by county and bridge name. The bridges are in four categories: authentic historic, authentic modern, non-authentic historic, and non-authentic modern. For each, a history and description, the World Guide Covered Bridge identification number, and length and width dimensions are given. To be included, a bridge must have been originally built as a true covered bridge, used as a means of traveling over an obstacle, usually water, not for access to a building or between buildings, and have a covered portion at least ten feet in length. There are 65 black & white and 55 color photographs.
