Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to Historical Fiction Tales, has written an able defence of the reading of this kind of romance, to which I have little to add except by the way of emphasis. Historical fiction is not history, but it is often better than history. A fine historical painting, a pageant, or a play, may easily teach more and carry a deeper impression than whole Chapters of description and analysis. Esmond and Tom fones are indispensable adjuncts to Lecky. Scott and Dumas will always have a larger history class than any two regular historians you could name. Even a second-rate historical novel may have ample excuse for existence. But a good one - good, that is, merely as a story - though chronology may be at fault and facts inaccurately stated, will probably succeed in making a period live in the imagination when text-books merely give us dry bones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Historical Novels and Tales It has been very gratifying to learn that the Guide has continued to sell regularly through all the seven years which have elapsed since it appeared in its third life-stage at the beginning of 1904; and this, in spite of competition in two new quarters. The much longer pause in republication (the last edition was by far the largest) has enabled me to effect what I regarded in the first instance as an impossible ideal; for, besides bringing my lists up to date through the entry of new books, I have once again gone over old ground, and have sought to include all those novels and tales which ignorance or ill-consideration caused 'me to omit in previous editions. And, let it be stated here that, in rectifying former omissions, I have not gone to workers in the same field of Bibliography and stolen their honey but I have, throughout, taken an independent line. Hence, although, in the Supple ment now added, there are descriptive notes on several hundred novels and tales which appeared before the 'publi cation of Mr. Bowen's Catalogue of Historical Novels (second edition) and of Dr. Baker's History in Fiction, not one of these notes is based upon the particulars furnished in either work. Wherever possible, I have obtained my infor mation from w actual novel or tale described. Four years ago (vide Dr. Baker's kindly allusion in the Preface to his admirable work just named), it was hinted that the Guide was somewhat lacking in its degree of com prehensiveness such a criticism could scarcely be maintained now. If there is still exclusion to some extent, there is (fourth edition) inclusion to a very much larger extent. I have allowed the utmost elasticity in my later decisions as to his torical qualification. How comprehensive has been my selection, may be judged from the fact that, while in my enlarged third edition the annotated lists covered between twelve and thirteen hundred novels and tales, I have now passed under review about seventeen hundred more. In the total of nearly three thousand novels and tales thus reached, over two thousand are not to be found in Mr. Bowen's catalogue, and some thirteen hundred are absent from Dr. Baker's lists. Comprehensiveness alone, however, would be a poor advantage, and I believe that, in its present form, besides being the largest bibliography of its kind, the Guide is also the most accurate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to British Historical Fiction NO attempt need be made to demonstrate the value of historical fiction as a handmaiden to history proper. Prompted by the consideration that teachers of History have rarely sufficient time to read or to search for suitable novels to recommend to their pupils, the authors have prepared this guide in the hope that it Will be found useful to teachers in Secondary and Elementary Schools, and by students of History generally. The list, which is representative and not exhaustive, has been compiled with a view to illustrating every phase of British History to which reference is usually made in an ordinary School course. In the case of events which might be termed historical landmarks, a wider range of choice has been presented, and efforts have been made to include books which treat of the events from different, and often conflicting, points of View. In certain periods, mediocre works have, faute de mieux, found a place, while in others, e.g., the Civil War, the Revolution, the 'forty-five, the 'ninety-eight, the task has been that of selection rather than that of investigation. Some works which are out of print have been included, but libraries - private and public - are still stocked with many of these the same consideration has led to the inclusion of most of the works of Ainsworth, James and other standard authors, whose volumes decorate - and, it is to be feared, Often gather dust on the bookshelves of many English households. In the late 19th Century it has been necessary to tread warily, and novels dealing with controversial and debatable questions have been largely excluded. In conclusion, it should be observed that perfect accuracy is not claimed for the dates assigned to the books: they are intended to point out rather than to point the period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History in Fiction: A Guide to the Best Historical Romances, Sagas, Novels, and Tales It is hoped that the arrangement Of the books by the country and date of the subject, with the appendix at the foot Of the page giving contem porary or nearly contemporary stories when such are available, will prove of use to lecturers, teach ers and students, and also to the general reader who may perhaps be induced by reading a group Of novels about a period, a man, or an event, to take a more serious interest in history. Some Of the works included lie very near the borderland Of history and romance, if not right on the other side. Many of the Icelandic sagas, for instance, are substantially history, though cast by the drama tic instinct oi the chronicler in an artistic mould. Much the same must be said Of several of Defoe's narratives. But the principle Of inclusion has been simply this: when in doubt, it is better to leave in than turn out. The entries of books have been made approximately according to the chronological order of succession of the chief events or the periods dealt with but this arrange ment is Of course not more than approximate, exactness being practically unattainable. Every effort has been made to fix the dates Of the period with which each work is concerned; but, as can well be imagined, with such an irresponsible Class Of literature as historical romance, this has been a difficult and deceptive task, and it is as well to apologize for inevitable inaccuracies beforehand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Fiction in English Where American novels have been published in England with an altered title, or English novels with an American title, the spurious desig nation is quoted in the note.' The original titles Of foreign works of fiction are given in italics after the English title, In most cases where they are not practically identical, with the exception of Russian and other languages in which the transliteration of titles is not uniform and the information would be of trifling value to the ordinary reader. It is hoped that in this and other points a fair degree of accuracy has been attained, but the possibilities of error in such a compilation as the present are innumerable, and the writer can only trust that his faults Of omission and commission are not serious, and that attention will be called thereto in order that they may be reduced in a future edition. It should be noted that books published since 3ist December, 191 I, do not come within his present purview. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Novel and Other Essays Historical fiction suffers in France from the same discredit as historical painting, and for the same reasons. It is either too easy to be worth while - a French critic might say - or so diffi cult as to be impossible. When a young man once went to Courbet for advice, saying that his vocation was to be a historical painter, the artist promptly responded: I don't doubt it; and therefore begin by giving three months to mak ing a portrait of your father! Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Fiction, English and American: Including Translations From Foreign Languages The object has been to supply as complete a list as might be of the most notable prose fiction in English, with as much characterization of the contents, nature, and style of each book as would go into a few lines of print. Manifestly, such a list must include along with the very best many novels that cannot be described as even among the second-best. It is a guide, not an autocratic proclamation that such and such are the world's best novels, and that all the rest are inferior. A proclamation of that sort would instantly meet with the same fate as sooner or later has befallen certain too authoritative pronouncements, whose authors have singled out what they considered the best books without reflecting that best is a relative term, relative, that is to say, not only to the other things with which there is a comparison, but also to the purposes of the books and the needs of readers. Best really means most suitable for some individual or for promoting some particular purpose. It is hoped in the present case that those using the Guide will be enabled to see for themselves what novels are recognized by most intelligent people as the best, and how and why they are the best, and also what others come nearest to them in interest and artistic merit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creative Art of Fiction With fiction it is far otherwise. The writer of a novel may sin against every law of narrative art without fear that his error will be mentioned in the critical reviews. Not one of the criticisms, in this country, of a recent work of fiction, Helbeek of Bannisdale, defined the author' s purpose and general plan of development; yet the closing scene, the death of the heroine by drowning, cannot be justified without reference to the motif of the story. There is in print no satisfactory treatment of fiction as an art; scholarship and critical opinion on the subject are inchoate; even among institutions of learning wherein courses of instruction on this topic are given, there is little agreement. In some, no better device has been hit upon than the application of accepted theories of dramatic structure to the study of the novel; in others, the history of fiction forms the subject-matter of study, and, incidentally, some attention is given to characteristics and schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Readers Guide to Great Twentieth-Century English Novels In varying ways, Conrad's emphasis on the individual artist's con scious mind as guide to his artistic conceptions - an anti-traditionalist position and a throwback to the philosophy of the 1890's, the time of Conrad's apprenticeship - found its counterpart in the statements of Huxley, Virginia Woolf, and Joyce. Conrad was following, in his way, Flaubert's attempt to make the novel a major artistic form, not merely a type of entertainment. Concern with form, a major French preoccu pation, did not significantly begin in England, we remember, until George Eliot, Meredith, and Conrad turned to the novel, and only the latter practiced what he theorized. After Conrad, we find several state ments of novelistic theory incorporated into the novel itself: as exam ples, Stephen's sermon on art in A Portrait, the remarks in Philip Quarles'journal in Point Counter Point, and, indirectly, the tense discussions between Loerke, the devilish creator, and Ursula and Gud run Brangwen near the end of Women in Love. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern English Literature: A Selection of the Best Known Works Circulated, With Which Is Embodied a Guide to Popular Works of Fiction Since the issue of the last general catalogue in October, 1902, this business has undergone a great development. The membership has increased to an enormous extent, a result brought about in great measure by the recommendation of members to their friends. For this emphatic approval of our endeavours we tender our best thanks to the public, and intend in the future, as in the past, still to merit its confidence. When the scheme, formulated by the management, has been realised in its entirety the Library will be the largest and most popular in the kingdom. The frontispiece shows one of the new London depots, and is typical of the way in which a number of the new branches are fitted. All true book-lovers find great pleasure in handling clean books, and this pleasure is intensified if the volumes are housed in quiet and comfortably furnished rooms, such as the one depicted. The system of exchanging books, too, that is in use at this Library, works extremely well, saving the members much annoyance, and the assistants a great deal of time and unnecessary labour. The list, it is said, does not claim to include the one hundred best novels. About sixty of the books are acknowledged classics; the remaining forty include some of the more noteworthy of the recent novels others were added to give variety, and to insure that no one consulting the list would fail to find the titles of at least a few books that he had read and enjoyed. In the same spirit the Aurora Public Library presents the list to its readers as a guide in the selection of what is worth reading in fiction. We miss from the list the names of Fielding and Richardson, fathers of the English novel; of Sienkiewicz, the brilliant Polish novelist; of Cervantes, the Spaniard, whose Don Quixote is among the world-famous books; of Freytag and Auerbach, who have given us such convincing pictures of German life and manners; of Mrs. Stowe, whose Uncle Tom's Cabin was an epoch-making book. But we take the list as we find it, assured that it contains nothing unworthy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
