Book Synopsis Dictionary of Construction Terms by : Simon Tolson
Download or read book Dictionary of Construction Terms written by Simon Tolson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Construction Terms offers clear and concise explanations of the most commonly encountered legal and technical terms, phrases and abbreviations used throughout the construction industry. It will save valuable time when searching for an authoritative explanation of a frequently used term and will become a practical reference for construction lawyers, practitioners and students, as well as those in related industries including planning, property and insurance. Why you should buy this book: There is no other all-inclusive collection of legal and technical terms available at present Convenient source of information for lawyers, practitioners and students Includes a list of common technical acronyms (ie. DPC, DPM, FFL) Lists acronyms of common institutions such as the ICE, JCT and ACE Examples of definitions: Modular construction A modern construction method whereby the building is constructed using prefabricated or pre-assembled building sections or modules. The three-dimensional building sections are typically fabricated and assembled in an enclosed factory environment and then delivered to site, ready for installation. Modular construction is aimed at minimising construction time by standardising design components, providing consistent quality and allowing site preparation and building activities to commence concurrently with the construction of the factory-made modules. Snagging The process of formally inspecting the construction works to identify any incomplete works or defects in completed works. A snagging list (or ‘punch list’) is a schedule of defects resulting from this inspection. These items typically need to be rectified prior to the issuing of a completion certificate or handing-over of the works although in some cases a completion certificate will be issued with a snagging list attached.

Book Synopsis A Glossary of Terms Used in English Architecture by : Thomas Dinham Atkinson
Download or read book A Glossary of Terms Used in English Architecture written by Thomas Dinham Atkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Terms Used in English Architecture This little book is limited to the historical aspect of Architecture, and only deals incidentally with words used in art and art criticism and in building. But at the same time many technical terms are to be found, and constructional terms in particular; for construction lies at the very root of the matter. More attention than is usual in books of this kind is devoted to that part of the subject which bears on social and religious life. Thus more space is given to houses and churches and proportionately less to purely architectural terms such as capitals and vaults. Definitions are in most cases unnecessary; they are sometimes given, as in arch, because it is interesting to work out a definition; and this particular instance, by the by, illustrates the importance I attach to construction. Derivations are given where they are illuminating or curious. When there has been a choice the most familiar word or form of word has generally been adopted without much regard to philology on the one hand or to medieval use or monkish slang on the other. Many terms used in Greek and Roman architecture are included because they are necessary to a proper understanding of Renaissance architecture and church-building. For this reason the general principle has been to include those terms which have a direct bearing on English architecture, whether they deal with decorative forms or with the planning of buildings. Book Synopsis The Complete Illustrated Book of Development Definitions by : Harvey S. Moskowitz
Download or read book The Complete Illustrated Book of Development Definitions written by Harvey S. Moskowitz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest edition of The Illustrated Book of Development Definitions breaks new ground. It addresses traditional and new planning problems: natural and industrial disasters such as hurricanes and oil spills; new housing types and living accommodations; changes in urban design and practice like new urbanism; sustainability; pedestrian and bicycle friendly environments; and more. Joining Harvey S. Moskowitz and Carl G. Lindbloom, authors of the first three editions, are two prominent, nationally known planners: David Listokin and Richard Preiss. Attorney Dwight H. Merriam adds legal annotations to almost all 2,276 definitions. These citations from court decisions bridge the gap between land use theory and real world application, bringing a new dimension to this edition. More than 20,000 copies of previous editions were sold over four decades to professionals and government representatives, such as members of planning and zoning boards and municipal governing bodies. This first revision in ten years updates what is widely acknowledged as an essential, standard reference for planners.
