This devastating disease takes strength not only in people who smoke but also in poor people that eat polluted food and use heating sources, and in those exposed naturally to toxic compounds present in indoor and outdoor environments. Lung cancer patients and their families wait actions from the science that give not only answer to their demands but also a light of hope at the moment of receiveing the diagnosis. This book meets the experience of several researchers who dedicate many hours a day to find not only the cure of lung cancer but also the way to convert the pathology of this chronic disease. In 12 chapters, the lectures will give information related to the relationship of lung cancer and smoking habit, the crucial role of the image technology for diagnosis of lung cancer, and a molecular vision of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer. The authors with a clinic and/or lab vision and with a great spirit to collaborate with the science and with each past, present, and future patient and their families have dedicated many hours to write each chapter. Probably, the final answer to find the cure of lung cancer is not in this book. However, the lectures will give scientific information that will contribute in the near future improvement to the life quality of the patients.

Book excerpt: This work, Lung Cancer, Volume 2: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Methods and Reviews, in the Methods in Molecular Medicine series presents an overview of the current status of those methods useful in the diagnosis and tre- ment of lung cancer—both as it exists in the clinic and as it is being revoluti- ized in the laboratory. The book is intended to serve as a resource for researchers wishing to increase their knowledge of current and cutting edge technologies, in order that their investigations into neoplasms of the lung may benefit from this enriched diversity of techniques and approaches. Owing to the complex nature of the disease and the variety of methods available to analyze and attack it, no volume attempting to define diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to lung cancer can ever be complete. The sheer number of investigators involved in lung cancer research guarantees that some aspect will be inadvertently excluded. However, I hope that the range of techniques included herein will serve to open up new avenues of investigation for both the novice and experienced researcher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lung cancer is a disease with pandemic public health implications as it is now the leading cause of cancer mortality throughout the world. This book results from two recent International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Workshops on lung cancer prevention. It strikes a balance between considering public health approaches to tobacco control and population-based screening, advances in clinical evaluation of chemoprevention approaches, and the biology of lung carcinogenesis. Indeed, while the science of smoking cessation is evolving as new pharmacological tools are moving into clinical evaluation, the current impact of molecular diagnostics is profound. The rapidly-evolving diagnostic technologies are revolutionizing basic scientific investigation of cancer, and this trend is expected to soon spill over into the clinical practice of medicine. The evolution of economical diagnostic platforms to allow for direct bronchial epithelial evaluation in high-risk populations promises to improve the diagnostic lead-time for this disease. The hope is that enough progress will occur to permit lung cancer detection in advance of clinical cancer so that the disease can be addressed early on, while it is still confined to the site of origin. Chemoprevention, which is designed to intervene in the early phase of carcinogenesis prior to any subjective clinical manifestation of a cancer, is also generating greater research interest. Moreover, the benefit of aerosolized administration of chemoprevention agents over conventional oral administration has strong appeal and may result in the reduction of the incidence of cancer when combined with new diagnostic technologies.

Book excerpt: Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death world-wide with the majority of patients suffering from advanced unresectable or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. Despite the advances in palliative chemotherapy, the survival rate for patients with this advanced disease treated with chemotherapy remains poor. In this book, the authors present topical research in the study of lung cancer treatments including epidermal growth factor tyrosine kinase inhibitors, in the management of advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer; lung cancer brachytherapy; volumetric modulated arc therapy and future individualised therapy for lung cancer in post-genomic era.

Book excerpt: Are You Receiving the Best Treatment for Lung Cancer? If you’ve been diagnosed with lung cancer, you’re probably frightened. And, you probably have many questions. You’re wondering about prognosis and treatment. What will the treatments be like? Will you have side effects? But...are you asking whether or not you’re receiving the best treatment possible? According to Walter Scott, M.D., it’s an important question to ask. Why? Because, despite advances in lung cancer treatment over the past few years, many lung cancer patients have not received the best treatment possible. Accordingly, Dr. Scott stresses the importance of patients educating themselves about the disease and its treatment so they can seek the best therapies available. In Lung Cancer--A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment, Dr. Scott discusses the most promising therapies for lung cancer, including the multimodality approach--a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Among the other topics he covers: * Tests for early detection of lung cancer * Staging the cancer and why it is so important * Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy . . . how they kill cancer cells * Alternative treatments . . . can they help? * The importance of clinical trials * Coping with emotions such as "smoker’s guilt” A Valuable Resource for Patients and Families

Book excerpt: Defining the Lung Cancer Problem 1 Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the world. It kills almost as many Americans as cancers of the breast, prostate, colon, rectum, pancreas, and 2 kidney combined, and accounts for 28.6% of all US cancer deaths. With an increase in the 5-year relative survival rate from 13% to only 16% in the more than 2 30 years from 1974 to the present, it will take us another 840 years to eradicate lung cancer deaths if we do not improve the current rate of progress. As discussed in this text, lung cancer prevention has received substantial att- tion. The decrease in smoking in recent decades has helped, but smoking is not the only problem. Lung cancer in people who have never smoked is currently the 5th 3 leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Several factors contribute to the lethality of lung cancer, including the rapidity of tumor growth, advanced stage at diagnosis (due to nonspecificity of early sy- toms and the uncertain efficacy of screening), early development of metastases, and resistance to therapy. Several chapters in this book discuss new molecular targets that may be potentially exploitable in the future, as well as discussing our track record to date in exploiting them.
