Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were the Appalachian Mountains formed? Are the barrier islands moving? Is there gold in the Carolinas? The answers to these questions and many more appear in this reader-friendly guide to the geology of North Carolina and South Carolina. Exploring the Geology of the Carolinas pairs a brief geological history of the region with 31 field trips to easily accessible, often familiar sites in both states where readers can observe firsthand the evidence of geologic change found in rocks, river basins, mountains, waterfalls, and coastal land formations. Geologist Kevin Stewart and science writer Mary-Russell Roberson begin by explaining techniques geologists use to "read" rocks, the science of plate tectonics, and the formation of the Carolinas. The field trips that follow are arranged geographically by region, from the Blue Ridge to the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain. Richly illustrated and accompanied by a helpful glossary of geologic terms, this field guide is a handy and informative carry-along for hikers, tourists, teachers, and families--anyone interested in the science behind the sights at their favorite Carolina spots. Includes field trips to: Grandfather Mountain, N.C. Linville Falls, N.C. Caesars Head State Park, S.C. Reed Gold Mine, N.C. Pilot Mountain State Park, N.C. Raven Rock State Park, N.C. Sugarloaf Mountain, S.C. Santee State Park, S.C. Jockey's Ridge State Park, N.C. Carolina Beach State Park, N.C. and 21 more sites in the Carolinas! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Explanatory Text for Geologic Map of North Carolina Counties into Virginia. The rocks of the two belts are very similar and consist of red, brown, purple and gray claystone, Shale, sandstone, conglomerate and fanglomerate, and some coal. The eastern one half of the State is underlain by sedimentary deposits that range from Upper Cretaceous to Recent in age. These sediments are commonly referred to as the Coastal Plain deposits and consist largely of unconsolidated sediments that include gravels, sands, clays, limestone and marls. The deposits of the Coastal Plain form a wedge-shaped block of sediments that increases in thickness from a feather edge along its western border to approximately feet at Cape Hatteras. The sedi ments rest unconformably on crystalline rocks of Precambrian age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural, Geological, and Descriptive Sketches of Lower North Carolina, and the Similar Adjacent Lands Sir: - The proposition of Mr. Edmund Ruffin, the distinguished Agriculturalist and Author, to furnish a. communication upon the agriculture of the eastern counties of this State, will, I hope, be accepted by your Excellency. It will please me especially, if this communication can be published in such a form, that it may be regarded as a report for the Agricultural and Geological Survey now in progress. The field of investigation in North Carolina is extremely wide, in consequence of a diversity of interest, climate and soil. Aid, therefore, from any quarter is important, especially when proffered by a gentleman of Mr. Ruffin's abilities. The principles of agriculture are the same everywhere in all countries, - but their application often require special modifications. It is so in this State. The use of our native fertilizers for example, in the various kinds of marls, call for special rules of application. These are to be found out only by close observation and much experience. An immense saving in money depends upon their proper application, as to time, from composition and the condition of the soil to which they are to be applied. The subject has been, and is still, receiving all the attention I am able to bestow upon it. We have no fear that we shall receive too much light upon the subject. Agriculture is slow in its advances, and hence, every communication which is calculated to give it an impulse, deserves the patronage of the State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological Report of the Midland Counties of North Carolina The fluctuations in mining property, however, have in jured its reputation in several notable instances. This has arisen from speculations. Many mines have been purchased with that view alone. They have been in the hands of stock companies; and it was more consonant to the feelings of parties to make money by the forced rise or fall of stocks, than by legitimate mining business. But this is now assum ing a more permanent character, and the time is not distant when it will become one of the main sources of the wealth of the State. The recorded observations embodied in this Report have been made by those who have been engaged in this survey. We have, it is true, received information from others; but at the same time it has been made a principle to see for our selves, and to base every important inference, or doctrine upon independent Observations.
