Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Geography of the British Empire Y object in writing this little book has been to present a general survey of the British empire as a whole, with the historical conditions, at least so far as they depend on geography, which have contributed to produce the present state of things. The historical geography of these islands of course goes very far back; in the rest of the empire the history, so far as it is English at all, is comparatively modern. In doing this I have tried to bring into special relief the unique character of the empire, both politically and geographically; for from this uniqueness a most impor tant inference logically follows: no historical precedents exist to guide us as to its probable future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commercial Geography of the British Empire In preparing the following pages, an endeavour has been made to supply information useful alike to the student and the general reader. The ramifications of the subject are too extensive to be adequately treated within the limits of one small volume, and much of the matter, therefore, is intended to be simply suggestive. There is scarcely any limit to the means of supplementing the information given. Such publications as The Statesman's Year Book, Whitaker's Almanac, and the Board of Trade Journal are invaluable in affording reliable statistics. The various colonial year books, and the periodical reports issued by the Colonial Office, contain much that is interesting and instructive; but the earnest student must remember that the daily press almost unfailingly marks the never-ceasing changes that constantly affect the markets of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic Geography of the British Empire The importance of the economic aspect of geo graphical science, demanding not only a record of the various features and phenomena of the earth's surface, but also an understanding of their relation to one another and more especially of their control of human life and activity, is now fully recognised, and this book attempts to work out on these lines the geography of those parts of the world occupied or controlled by the British people. For this purpose the British Empire affords a field of study almost as Wide as the world itself, for it presents physical features, climates, plants, animals and peoples of every type. The widely different modes of life and even the mental outlook of the Canadian farmer, the Australian squatter, the South African miner, the Indian ryot, the South Sea islander and the town-dweller of the mother country are Very largely the result of their geographical environment; and the causes and pos sible solutions of many Imperial problems cannot be clearly understood Without a knowledge 'of the geographical conditions underlying them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Empire: A Sketch of the Geography, Growth, Natural and Political Features of the United Kingdom, Its Colonies and Dependencies Since this suggestion was made many excellent works have appeared, tending to make Geography an attractive study, by combining it largely with natural science and the history of man. The present volume is one more attempt to render instruction in this direction food for the mind, and not mere stufiing for the memory: its aim being to give true ideas with respect to the country we live in and the relations of England with her colonies and dependencies, unbiassed by mere conventional opinion or exaggerated national sentiment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Empire Beyond the Seas: An Introduction to World Geography The world at the present time is divided into a large number of separate states which vary greatly in size and importance. At one end of the scale we have small blocks of land, such as the tiny principality of Monaco, and at the other great empires and common wealths. Among these states four stand out by reason of their Size and their large population. These are, in order of size, the British Empire, the Russian Empire, France with its colonies and dependencies, and the republic of China. The accompanying diagram shows the relative areas and populations of these four great states (fig. I). From this diagram We see that the British Empire has by far the largest extension, the Russian coming next to it in this respect. On the other hand, China, with an area slightly less than that of France and its colonies, has a population which exceeds that of the British Empire. Thus China is the most densely peopled of the great states. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
