Book excerpt: This book provides insights into the true nature of financial and economic data, and is a practical guide on how to analyze a variety of data sources. The focus of the book is on finance and economics, but it also illustrates the use of quantitative analysis and data science in many different areas. Lastly, the book includes practical information on how to store and process data and provides a framework for data driven reasoning about the world. The book begins with entertaining tales from Graham Giller's career in finance, starting with speculating in UK government bonds at the Oxford Post Office, accidentally creating a global instant messaging system that went 'viral' before anybody knew what that meant, on being the person who forgot to hit 'enter' to run a hundred-million dollar statistical arbitrage system, what he decoded from his brief time spent with Jim Simons, and giving Michael Bloomberg a tutorial on Granger Causality. The majority of the content is a narrative of analytic work done on financial, economics, and alternative data, structured around both Dr Giller's professional career and some of the things that just interested him. The goal is to stimulate interest in predictive methods, to give accurate characterizations of the true properties of financial, economic and alternative data, and to share what Richard Feynman described as 'The Pleasure of Finding Things Out.'

Book excerpt: An efficient method is described for the numerical evaluation by a high speed digital computer of: the integral of an uncorrelated elliptical Gaussian distribution over a circle centered at the mean of the distribution, V(K, c); the integral of a circular Gaussian distribution over a circle offset from the mean of the distribution, P(R, d). The methods are programmed for both the NORC and the IBM 7090. They yield 6 decimal digit accuracy with an average computation time of 10 milliseconds per case on NORC and 6 milliseconds on the 7090. Two extensive inverse tables are included. One gives the radius K as a function V and c, and the other gives the radius R as a function of P and d.

Book excerpt: Number theory, spectral geometry, and fractal geometry are interlinked in this in-depth study of the vibrations of fractal strings, that is, one-dimensional drums with fractal boundary. Throughout Geometry, Complex Dimensions and Zeta Functions, Second Edition, new results are examined and a new definition of fractality as the presence of nonreal complex dimensions with positive real parts is presented. The new final chapter discusses several new topics and results obtained since the publication of the first edition.

Book excerpt: Number theory, spectral geometry, and fractal geometry are interlinked in this study of the vibrations of fractal strings, that is, one-dimensional drums with fractal boundary. The Riemann hypothesis is given a natural geometric reformulation in context of vibrating fractal strings, and the book offers explicit formulas extended to apply to the geometric, spectral and dynamic zeta functions associated with a fractal.

Book excerpt: This reference/text desribes the basic elements of the integral, finite, and discrete transforms - emphasizing their use for solving boundary and initial value problems as well as facilitating the representations of signals and systems.;Proceeding to the final solution in the same setting of Fourier analysis without interruption, Integral and Discrete Transforms with Applications and Error Analysis: presents the background of the FFT and explains how to choose the appropriate transform for solving a boundary value problem; discusses modelling of the basic partial differential equations, as well as the solutions in terms of the main special functions; considers the Laplace, Fourier, and Hankel transforms and their variations, offering a more logical continuation of the operational method; covers integral, discrete, and finite transforms and trigonometric Fourier and general orthogonal series expansion, providing an application to signal analysis and boundary-value problems; and examines the practical approximation of computing the resulting Fourier series or integral representation of the final solution and treats the errors incurred.;Containing many detailed examples and numerous end-of-chapter exercises of varying difficulty for each section with answers, Integral and Discrete Transforms with Applications and Error Analysis is a thorough reference for analysts; industrial and applied mathematicians; electrical, electronics, and other engineers; and physicists and an informative text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines.

A difficult problem is to describe the relationship between the shape (geo metry) of the drum and its sound (its spectrum). In this book, we restrict ourselves to the one-dimensional case of fractal strings, and their higher dimensional analogues, fractal sprays. We develop a theory of complex di mensions of a fractal string, and we study how these complex dimensions relate the geometry with the spectrum of the fractal string. We refer the reader to [Berrl-2, Lapl-4, LapPol-3, LapMal-2, HeLapl-2] and the ref erences therein for further physical and mathematical motivations of this work. (Also see, in particular, Sections 7. 1, 10. 3 and 10. 4, along with Ap pendix B.) In Chapter 1, we introduce the basic object of our research, fractal strings (see [Lapl-3, LapPol-3, LapMal-2, HeLapl-2]). A 'standard fractal string' is a bounded open subset of the real line. Such a set is a disjoint union of open intervals, the lengths of which form a sequence which we assume to be infinite. Important information about the geometry of . c is contained in its geometric zeta function (c(8) = L lj. j=l 2 Introduction We assume throughout that this function has a suitable meromorphic ex tension. The central notion of this book, the complex dimensions of a fractal string . c, is defined as the poles of the meromorphic extension of (c.
