Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical study of how China was represented on the historical London stage in selected examples from the late seventeenth century to the early twentieth century—which corresponds with the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), China’s last monarchy. The examples show that during this historical period, the stage representations of the country were influenced in turn by Jesuit writings on China, Britain’s expanding material interest in China, the presence of British imperial power in Asia, and the establishment of diasporic Chinese communities abroad. While finding that many of these works may be read as gendered and feminized, Chang emphasizes that the Jesuits’ depiction of China as a country of high culture and in perennial conflict with the Tartars gradually lost prominence in dramatic imaginations to depictions of China’s material and visual attractions. Central to the book’s argument is that the stage representations of China were inherently intercultural and open to new influences, manifested by the evolving combinations of Chinese and English (British) traits. Through the dramatization of the Chinese Other, the representations questioned, satirized, and put in sharp relief the ontological and epistemological bases of the English (British) Self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a creative medium, ancient Greek tragedy has had an extraordinarily wide influence: many of the surviving plays are still part of the theatrical repertoire, and texts like Agamemnon, Antigone, and Medea have had a profound effect on Western culture. This Companion is not a conventional introductory textbook but an attempt, by seven distinguished scholars, to present the familiar corpus in the context of modern reading, criticism, and performance of Greek tragedy. There are three main emphases: on tragedy as an institution in the civic life of ancient Athens, on a range of different critical interpretations arising from fresh readings of the texts, and on changing patterns of reception, adaptation, and performance from antiquity to the present. Each chapter can be read independently, but each is linked with the others, and most examples are drawn from the same selection of plays.

Book excerpt: The Rhetoric of Sensibility in Eighteenth-Century Culture explores the burgeoning eighteenth-century fascination with the human body as an eloquent, expressive object. This wide-ranging study examines the role of the body within a number of cultural arenas - particularly oratory, the theatre and the novel - and charts the efforts of projectors and reformers who sought to exploit the textual potential of the body for the public assertion of modern politeness. Paul Goring shows how diverse writers and performers including David Garrick, James Fordyce, Samuel Richardson, Sarah Fielding and Laurence Sterne were involved in the construction of new ideals of physical eloquence - bourgeois, sentimental ideals which stood in contrast to more patrician, classical bodily modes. Through innovative readings of fiction and contemporary manuals on acting and public speaking, Goring reveals the ways in which the human body was treated as an instrument for the display of sensibility and polite values.

Book excerpt: Fifteen outstanding scholars of theater, music, art, and literature explore the interrelations of eighteenth-century British theater and the various art forms that it incorporated into itself. The essays examine the theater's increasing reliance on set designers, costumers, musicians and composers, poets, dramatists, and librettists, focusing on the ways in which this dependence fundamentally changed the theater. It presents an insightful explanation of how emotion might emerge deep inside the systems, and emotional behaviour could be seen as a consequence of their internal management. The final approach attempts to account for a range of events associated with emotion, from functional and behavioural features to aspects related to the dynamics and the development of feeling. The book provides a theoretical foundation for engineering and designing computational emotion as a framework for developing future adaptive systems. It includes a painstaking analysis of the rationales for the features of the final approach, including aspects from the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Psychology, the Cognitive Sciences and Model-based Systems. Synthesizing knowledge from a variety of disciplines, it ultimately presents a model conceptualization following the perspectives of Engineering and the Cognitive Sciences.
