Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General History of Europe (350-1900) The authors of this General History of Europe venture to hope that their book will explain itself. The only matter concerning which they feel obliged to state their position in a prefatory word is the important point of the correlation of text-book and literature. They firmly believe that the use of any single and unaided text-a practice still common in our schools-is a misfortune and a calamity, and for that reason they desire to put themselves on record in the most definite terms against that ancient abuse. Their text consequently is conceived by them as a mere framework which the literature accompanying each chapter is intended to clothe and elaborate. This literature the authors have carefully selected with the needs of the beginner in their minds; they do not wish to weary and confuse him with a great mass of material; they desire merely to conduct him a stage or two upon the path of historical studies, but they are eager that that path should be the right path. The teacher is therefore very earnestly, enjoined to encourage in the pupil wide reading, and the habit of comparison and criticism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from East and West Through Fifteen Centuries, Vol. 1 of 4: Being a General History From B. C. 44 to A. D. 1453 And although in a comparatively short history general features rather than details must necessarily be chie y attempted, yet one compensating advantage is gained which is a very real one. For in such a history a general perspective is obtained, which is not possible when the events in the various countries of Western Europe, those in what was once the eastern half of the Roman Empire, and those in England,1 have all to be studied in different books. It is difficult to give the history of so long a period in a condensed way without making it dull and uninteresting. I have endeavoured to avoid this result (at the risk of a charge of unevenness) by going from time to time into detail regarding particular episodes while these occasional glimpses into the circumstances and life of the time enable the reader to picture the same in the case of other episodes which of necessity have been more brie y narrated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General History and State of Europe, Vol. 2 My method of studying history was calculated for my own use, and not for the public, whom I never intended to trouble with my thoughts on this subject. At length a lady, the ornament of her age and sex, whose extensive genius embraced every subject, had a mind to learn history along with me, though she had conceived as great a dislike to it at first as Father Mallebranche, because, like him, she had great abilities for geometry and metaphysics. "What signifies it," said she, "to a Frenchwoman like me, who live here in a rural retirement, to know that Egil succeeded King Haquin in the kingdom of Sweden or that Ottoman was the son of Ortogrul? With pleasure I have read the Greek and Roman histories; because they exhibited pictures to my mind drawn at full length, which fixed my attention. But I have not been yet able to go through any one large history of our modern nations: for I hardly see any thing in them but confusion, a multitude of trivial events, without any order or connection; a thousand battles no way decisive, and in which I did not even so much as learn the weapons they made use of to destroy one another. I therefore renounced so dry and unprofitable a study, which overloads, without improving the mind." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World History The scope, character, and purpose of this textbook perhaps require some clarification here. It covers the entire historic field, together with a chapter on prehistoric times; it presents a survey of human progress, rather than a chronological outline of events; it is intended for that large body of students who, for various reasons, do not take more than one year of history in the high school. They ought to gain from such a course, however brief, some conception of social development and some realization Of man's upward march from the Stone Age until the present time. Nothing but general or universal history will give them that conception, that realization. And only a history of the world will enable them to appreciate the contributions made by peoples widely separated in space and time to what is steadily becoming the common civilization of mankind. About two thirds of the book are devoted to the last three centuries. This period furnishes the immediate historical background Of the life of to-day: it is therefore the period ordinarily most interesting and profitable to the student. The chapters dealing with it are reproduced, with some abbrevia tion, from my Modern European History. The other chapters are based on my Early European History, but they contain much that is new, both in the text and also by way of maps and illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Geography of Europe, Vol. 1 of 2 It is now several years since this book was begun. It has been delayed by a crowd of causes, by a temporary loss of strength, by enforced absence from England, by other occupations and interruptions of various kinds. I mention this only because of the effect which I fear it has had on the book itself. It has been impossible to make it, what a book should, if possible, be, the result of one continuous effort. The mere fact that the kindness of the publishers allowed the early part to be printed some years back has, I fear, led to some repetition and even contradiction. A certain change of plan was found unavoidable. It proved impossible to go through the whole volume according to the method of the earlier chapters. Instead of treating Europe as a whole, I found it needful to divide it into several large geographical groups. The result is that each of the later chapters has had to go over again some small amount of ground which had been already gone over in the earlier chapters. In some cases later lights have led to some changes of view or expression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Europe, Ancient and Medieval: Earliest Man, the Orient, Greece and Rome General European history is one of the most perplexing sub jects to deal with in the high school. It seems absolutely essen tial that boys and girls should have some knowledge of the whole past of mankind without that they can have no real understand ing of the world in which they live, for the simple reason that the present can only be explained by the past. The older historical manuals were, in the main, short accounts of past events; but it is really past conditions and past institutions and past ideas that are best worth knowing about. The older books tended, more over, to give too much attention to the remote past and too little information in regard to recent history, so that there was little chance of the pupil's realizing the vital bearing of the past on the present. The aim of these two volumes is to avoid the defects of the older books, first, by frankly subordinating the mere happenings of the past to a clear statement of the conditions under which men lived for long periods, of the ideas which they held, and of the man ner in which conditions and ideas have undergone great changes in man's slow rise from his original savage estate; secondly, by devoting about half of the work, namely, Volume II, to the past hundred and fifty years, which concern us most immediately. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General History of the World, Vol. 3 Popular Reaction against the Spirit of Conquest repro sented by Napoleon - The revolution of 1688 in England remained wholly English, so it did not leave its own island. The French Revolution was cosmopolitan. The members of the French National Assembly, not merely solicitous of the ancient liberties of the country, had the larger idea of rights common to all men united in society. Thus they placed the Declaration of Rights as a preamble to the Constitution of 1791. They thought of humanity no less than of France. This largeness of view constituted the grandeur and also the misery of the French Revolution. As a result the new order of things emerged from the past only with frightful throes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General History of the World, Vol. 2 Below the warlike society of the lords was the toiling society of the villeins and serfs. The freemen had dis appeared. The villeins, or free tenants, and the serfs cultivated the land for the lord under the shadow of the feudal keep around which they clustered, and which sometimes defended but more often Oppressed them. The villein had only to pay his fixed rents like a farmer and to perform the least onerous forced labor. He could not be detached from the land which had been assigned him to cultivate, but he had the right to hold it as his own. As for the serfs, The sire, says Pierre de Fontaine, can take all that they have, can hold their bodies in prison whenever he pleases, and is forced to answer therefor only to God alone. In spite of this the condition of the serf was better than that of the slave in antiquity. He was regarded as a man. He had a family. The Church, which declared him a son of Adam, made him, before God at least, the equal of the proud est lords.
