Book excerpt: What could be more appealing than taking a small branch from a tree in your garden and, with a few simple tools, making a wooden spoon to use in your kitchen or give to a friend? Carving this way is a very accessible hobby. The tools are reasonably priced, the raw material is everywhere (yes, it grows on trees!) and there is no need for a dedicated workspace. This book is an introduction to a set of knife and axe cuts that will help you use spoon carving tools effectively and safely. The teaching method is unusual in that it initially focuses on the skills needed to use the tools, rather than what you are making.

Book excerpt: At the time I purchased my first spoon from Dan Dustin, in the early 1970s, I had no knowledge of wooden spoons, their history, or the work of any other spoon carvers. That simple inexpensive purchase set me forth on a wonderful continuing journey of almost forty years. Shortly afterwards I met Barry Gordon and Norm Sartorius at regional craft shows and began to purchase their work. Since that time I have acquired well over 500 contemporary spoons, including now more than 375 nine inch teaspoons. Carvers from around the world created almost all of those small treasures specifically for that collection. A Gathering of Spoons (Linden, 2012) describes that project in detail and contains photographs of the first 283 9" spoons. This short treatise includes photographs of some 9," and other, spoons added since that earlier book. -Norman Stevens

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean comes incredible stories of science, history, finance, mythology, the arts, medicine, and more, as told by the Periodic Table. Why did Gandhi hate iodine (I, 53)? How did radium (Ra, 88) nearly ruin Marie Curie's reputation? And why is gallium (Ga, 31) the go-to element for laboratory pranksters?* The Periodic Table is a crowning scientific achievement, but it's also a treasure trove of adventure, betrayal, and obsession. These fascinating tales follow every element on the table as they play out their parts in human history, and in the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. THE DISAPPEARING SPOON masterfully fuses science with the classic lore of invention, investigation, and discovery--from the Big Bang through the end of time. *Though solid at room temperature, gallium is a moldable metal that melts at 84 degrees Fahrenheit. A classic science prank is to mold gallium spoons, serve them with tea, and watch guests recoil as their utensils disappear.

Book excerpt: Inspired by a true story, White River Red: A Novel vividly portrays the tumults and triumphs of a rough, generous soul who touched countless lives with her kindness and courage. In 1906, fifteen-year-old Forrestina Bradley runs away from her stifling life of ease and joins the circus as a tightrope walker. After a tragedy forces her to leave the circus, she embarks on a life of nomadic adventure, running a carnival rat-game and becoming involved in an illegal dance hall and moonshine business near the banks of the White River in Arkansas during Prohibition. Along the way, she meets and loves three men—Max, Jack, and George—who each break her heart in vastly different ways. It’s a good thing that Forrestina is tough enough to survive the men in her life. Tough enough to become a legend. In 1972, Betty, a young reporter desperate to break into the boys’ club of journalism, offers to interview the now-elderly Forrestina. What she discovers in Forrestina’s story is a lesson of strength, resilience, friendship, and faith. She learns that though defying normal is often painful, for some brave souls it’s the only way to truly live.

Book excerpt: British traders and Ojibwe hunters. Cree women and their metis daughters. Explorers and anthropologists and Aboriginal guides and informants. These people, their relationships, and their complex identities were not featured in histories until the 1970s, when scholars from multiple disciplines brought new perspectives and approaches to bear on the past. Gathering Places presents some of the most innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to metis, fur trade, and First Nations history being practised today. Whether they are discussing dietary practices on the Plateau, the meanings of totemic signatures, or issues of representation in public history, the authors present novel explorations of evidence that extend beyond earlier histories centred on the archive. By drawing on archaeological, material, oral, and ethnographic evidence and by exploring personal approaches to history and scholarship, these essays mark a significant departure from the old paradigm of history writing and will serve as models for recovering Aboriginal and cross-cultural experiences and perspectives.
