Book excerpt: Illustrations: Numerous B/w Illustrations Description: Ananda K. Coomaraswamy's Early Indian Architecture is a study of the subject based mainly on the information as available in early Pali literature and as represented in the reliefs of Bharhut, Sanchi and Amaravati. The work is divided into two parts: Part I deals with cities and city-gates, etc. while Part II is on the Bodhi-gharas i.e. representations of the Bodhi-tree with or without a temple structure. Coomaraswamy has assembled the data systematically and in the process brought out details not only from literature but also from sculptural representations. He has confined himself not only to the early texts and material but also has made use of information from later examples, particularly forts, etc. The details about the lay-out of early cities, alongwith their different components, architectural terms as available in early texts and illustrations with copious notes on each have made this work invaluable for those interested in serious study of the subject. This monograph is a must for students of archaeology including art and architecture.

The architecture of India reflects both the cultural diversity of the subcontinent and its rich political and historical inheritance. In this guide, the various strands of this rich architectural history, from the dawn of civilization to modern times, are beautifully presented in word and picture. Readers are taken on a fascinating tour of Indus Valley civilization, early Vedic traditions, Hindu, Jain, Mughal, regional, colonial and post-independence architectural styles. Themes such as water architecture and the architecture of science also figure prominently, giving many westerners their first glimpse of these styles. The informative text, complemented by 400 photographs, watercolors, maps and plans, provide compelling evidence of India's influence on building design throughout history.

Book excerpt: Eloquent Spaces adopts the twin analytic of meaning and community to write a fresh history of building in early India. It presents a new perspective on the principles and practices of early Indian architecture. Defining it broadly over a range of space uses, the book argues for architecture as a form of cultural production as well as public consumption. Ten chapters by leading archaeologists, architects, historians and philosophers, examining different architectural sites and landscapes, including Sanchi, Moodabidri, Srinagar, Chidambaram, Patan, Konark, Basgo and Puri, demonstrate the need to look beyond the built form to its spirit, beyond aesthetics to cognition, and thereby to integrating architecture with its myriad living contexts. The volume captures some of the semantic diversity inherent in premodern Indian traditions of civic building, both sacred and secular, which were, however, unified in their insistence on enacting meaning and a transcendent validity over and above utility and beauty of form. The book is a quest for a culturally rooted architecture as an alternative to the growing crisis of disembededness that informs modern praxis. This volume will be of interest to scholars and practitioners of architecture, ancient Indian history, philosophy, art history and cultural studies.

It is the place where our reflected sentient being (the First Bird) is trying to probe into to recover the hidden sun. The allegory is evident in the parable of the Cave once preached by the Upanishads and later by the Greek philosopher Plato. The probe is to push forward the First Bird to surge higher in the resplendent celestial blue under the full radiance of the Solar world, which is the Second, resulting in an explosion of an infinite all-pervading Divinity. Till the union and the rapture is attained, there are the two Birds – one, the psychic being, which is within us and the other one, which is the direct portion of the Divine. The direct portion is constantly trying to guide and work within us, so that evolution goes on and on. In the words of Sri Aurobindo, it is the Çhaitya Purusha, the direct portion of the Divine in the human, which is working incessantly till the rapture is activated. Ancient roots are evident in the ancient Swetaswatara Upanishad hailed by the primordial Sage Kapila and coded originally in a later text called the Bhagabat Purana, The Çhaitya Purusha is also the being that is behind the Chitta, Sri Aurobindo says. Millenniums later, the inspired Architects in the most ancient of all Buddhist ages had carved out the sacred idea in form of rock-cut expressions called the Chaitya hall. As the Mahayana Sutra of the foremost Shurangama at the Crown of the Great Buddha says: …the way of practicing the Samadhi is not singular and its actual method of cultivation depends upon the functioning of mind and mental concomitants (Citta-Chaitya pravritti) of each being and their interconnectedness (Mahat)… It is in the recovery or a re-tracing of the two as a DIVINITY that is originally ONE, an individual's journey called evolution and a collective journey called civilization itself are sustained. It is also from the deeper embedded patterns of this journey the gems of the system's foundation can be quarried.

As a results of India's global discourse with other regions around the world, there have been many influences that have been assimilated into its architecture, producing unique, varied and lively results. This fantastic volume walks the reader through India's history, both architecturally and culturally, exploring its different styles of buildings and providing interesting insights into their origin and evolution. “Indian Architecture” is highly recommended for those with an interest in architecture and Indian history alike. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new introduction on architecture.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coomaraswamy's contribution to the history of Architecture in India was limited but profound. In particular, his probing analysis of texts and sculpted reliefs in order to reconstruct the extraordinary wooden architecture of early India was an act of great scholarship. That three ofCoomaraswamy's essays were published in a journal, Eastern Art, that ceased publication after only three issues, and that an important fourth essay on 'Huts and Related Temple Types' survived only in manuscript have made access to Coomaraswamy's work in this area difficult to students and scholars. This volume for the first time brings together these four major essays along with Coomaraswamy's analysis of 'Indian Architectural Terms'. An introductory essay by Michael W Meister on 'The Language and Process of Early Indian Architecture' connects Coomaraswamy's foundational essays with morerecent scholarship on the origination of India's vast tradition of temple architecture. An Afterword, with Joseph Rykwert on 'Adam's House and Hermit Huts' presents a conversation with a major western architectural historian.
