Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes and Heroines of Fiction Roughly speaking, the year 1500 forms the line of cleavage between this volume and its predecessor bearing the subtitle, Modem Prose and Poetry. But no merely arbitrary date can fur nish a philosophical and consistent division between a volume so subtitled and a companion volume like the present, dealing not only with the characters of classic and oriental myth (these date from the unknown past), but also with heroes of the folk-lore, legend and tradition of all times and of that non-literary literature known as the ballad and the chapbook. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroines That Every Child Should Know: Tales for Young People of the World's Heroines of All Ages The Book of Heroes should never be separated from the Book of Heroines; they are the two parts of that story of courage, service and achievement which is the most interesting and inspiring chapter in the history of human kind in this wonderful world of ours. When ever and wherever there has appeared a hero, a heroine hasalmost always worked with or for him; for heroic and noble deeds are rarely done Without some kind of cooper ation. Now and then, it is true, single acts of daring stand out alone; but, as a rule, the hero gains his end because other men or women stand beside him in times of great peril. William the Silent could not have made his heroic defence of the Low Countries against the armies of Spain if men of heroic temper and women of indomitable courage had not been about him in those terrible years; Washington could not have converted a body of farmers into an organized and disciplined army if he had not been aided by the skill of drill masters like Steuben; nor could Lieutenant Peary make brilliant dashes for the North Pole if other men did not join him in his perilous expeditions. The hero is generally a leader of heroes, as a great general is a leader of soldiers who carry out his plans in hourly jeopardy of limb and life. She wore a gown of rich velvet, and a cloak of royal ermine hung from her shoulders. Upon her head was a net of gold set with pearls, and many jewels glittered at her throat. She was the Lady Elizabeth, Princess of England. As she joined the group of young girls awaiting her, she noticed a strange horse tied beside the King's at the foot of the terrace. "Whose steed is that?" she asked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes Every Child Should Know: Tales for Young People of All the World's Heroes in All Ages They had worked and thought and dreamed only a little time before they began to explain the marvelous earth on which they found themselves and the strange things that happened in it; the vastness and beauty of the fields, woods, sky and sea, the force of the wind, the com ing and going of the day and night, the warmth of sum mer when everything grew, and the cold of winter when everything died, the rush of the storm and the terrible brightness of the lightning. They had no idea of what we call law or force; they could not think of anything being moved or any noise being made unless there was some one like themselves to move things and make sounds; and so they made stories of gods and giants and heroes and nymphs and fawns; and the myths, which are poetic explanations of the world and of the life of men in it, came into being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes and Greathearts and Their Animal Friends Or shall their heroes be the men and women who have stood for the right and who have enriched the world by noble deeds and exalted lives. Almost every child has within him a nobility of soul which recognizes these qualities in others, and which will respond to the influence and example of a great life. Fortunate, indeed, is the youth to whom such an appeal to his better nature is made during his early years while the mind is plastic and impressionable. The purpose of this book is to direct attention to some of those great souls who have been amongst the leaders in the great conflict for truth and justice - to show the gentle and kindly side of their natures by their love and attachment to the ani mals under their care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bride's Hero Both volumes are here in my writing-desk. I was looking them over a little before beginning this. I never called my book a diary; one hears so much fun being made of girls who keep diaries. But then, most girls have some one to whom they can go and tell their troubles, or the fun they have, or to ask advice. I have nobody at all, for any one who knows Aunt Dora would know I could n't say things I really care for in my heart to her. My first volume I called Letters to my Darling Mother. I wonder what Aunt Dora would say if she saw that inscription? She would think something was very wrong with my head. Oh, how glad I am she '11 never know about my books! How glad I am that I shan't really have to hear her say anything about them! For it's hopeless arguing with Aunt Dora. You begin a subject, and she snaps you up with a snubby sort of answer that finishes the matter and you at the same time, making you feel a Worm. Only, of course, she hardly ever does it to Marguerite, or to new acquaintances; only to people she is tired of, and impatient with, like me. I used to feel, somehow, as if my mother might come back and read those letters of mine to her, maybe while I was asleep. I used always to imagine myself asking her advice about things, and then I 'd dream that she told me what I ought to do, or comforted me when I was miserable. I never had time to know my mother very well, or she me, in this world because she died before I was three. But sometimes, m flashes, it seems as if I an remember her. I distinctly see a beautiful young face, close to mine, bending over me when I 'm in bed. It is a small oval face, without much color, and it has a sweet, curved mouth, the upper lip shaped like a how. The eyes are gray, the color of slate, with golden brown spots round the pupils; and they look at me from under long, dark lashes that curl up softly. I can see her little, delicate nose, with sensitive nostrils, and her brown hair parted in the middle, and spraying into what I like to call love locks over her forehead. It 's a pretty word, and one finds it in poetry or old fashioned stories about sweet heroines of other times; so it seems to suit my mother, for I think of her as being rather old-fashioned, or, anyhow, not hard and brilliant like the mothers of a great many girls I know especially not at all like Aunt Dora, who says I am old-fashioned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heroines of History Admitting therefore the generally-allowed influence of woman, but restricting our observations to the one particular object of this work, Heroism, we remark that the latter, partaking largely of Fortitude, has ever been considered peculiarly a feminine quality, and that though biography, like a vast picture made up of a myriad varied faces, pleases one taste by some fea tures, and another by those wholly opposite, yet the element of encouragement or reproof is in each; indeed, even where no sympathy appears, discrimina tion may discover beauties which, by the affections, convince the reason. 'hence, too, it is the most profitable kind of history, because it presents the individual as influenced by and controlling circum stances, rather than exhibits these last in their dry detail 5 and the knowledge derived from it, is there fore of the greatest importance to the young, who Copy character' readily, and are often blinded to imperfection by the false lustre of ambition and glory.
