Book excerpt: Abstract: "Provision of end-to-end QoS guarantees on communication necessitates appropriate support in the end systems (i.e., hosts) and network routers that form the communication fabric. Typically, the support is in the form of suitable extensions to the communication subsystem and the underlying operating system for specification and maintenance of QoS guarantees. This paper focuses on the architectural and implementation challenges involved in realizing QoS-sensitive host communication subsystems on contemporary microkernel operating systems with limited real-time support. We motivate and describe the components constituting our integrated service architecture that together ensure QoS-sensitive handling of network traffic at both sending and receiving hosts. We separate the policies from mechanisms in each component, demonstrating a communication framework that can implement alternative QoS models by applying appropriate policies. We also report the results of a detailed execution profile of the system to characterize communication costs for the purposes of admission control. An experimental evaluation in a controlled configuration demonstrates the efficacy with which QoS guarantees are maintained, despite limitations imposed by the underlying operating system."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The support of sufficient Quality-of-Service (QoS) for applications residing in a distributed environment and running on top of high performance networks is a demanding issue. Currently, the areas to provide this support adequately include communication protocols, operating systems support, and offered network services. A configurable approach of communication protocols offers the needed protocol flexibility to react accordingly on various different requirements. Communication protocols and operating systems have to be parametrized using internal configuration parameters, such as window sizes, retry counters, or scheduling mechanisms, that rely closely on requested application-oriented or network- dependent QoS, such as bandwidth or delay. Moreover, these internal parameters have to be recalculated from time to time due to network changes (such as congestion or line break-down) or due to application- specific alterations (such as enhanced bandwidth requirements or increased reliability) to adjust a temporary or semi-permanent 'out-of-tune' service behavior. Therefore, a rule-based evaluation and QoS updating framework for configuration parameters in a networking environment has been developed. The resulting 'rulework' can be used within highly dynamic environments in a communication subsystem that offers the possibility to specify for every QoS parameter both a bounding interval of values and an average value. As an example, the framework has been integrated in the Function-based Communication Subsystem (F-CSS). Especially, an enhanced application service interface is offered, allowing for the specification of various QoS-parameters that are used to configure a sufficient application-tailored communication protocol."

Book excerpt: Towards collaborative business ecosystems Last decade was fertile in the emerging of new collaboration mechanisms and forms of dynamic virtual organizations, leading to the concept of dynamic business ecosystem, which is supported (or induced ?) by the progress of the ubiquitous I pervasive computing and networking. The new technologies, collaborative business models, and organizational forms supported by networking tools "invade" all traditional businesses and organizations what requires thinking in terms of whole systems, i. e. seeing each business as part of a wider economic ecosystem and environment. It is also becoming evident that the agile formation of very dynamic virtual organizations depends on the existence of a proper longer-term "embedding" or "nesting" environment (e. g. regional industry cluster), in order to guarantee certain basic requirements such as trust building ("Trusting your partner" is a gradual and long process); common interoperability, ontology, and distributed collaboration infrastructures; agreed business practices (requiring substantial engineering Ire-engineering efforts); a sense of community ("we vs. the others"), and some sense of stability (when is a dynamic state or a stationary state useful). The more frequent situation is the case in which this "nesting" environment is formed by organizations located in a common region, although geography is not a major facet when cooperation is supported by computer networks.

Indeed, there is no area in the social and economic world which is unaffected by the recent advances. In response to these changes scientists from numerous disciplines teamed up in 1997 to lay a foundation for a common theory of networks. The objective was to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind social, economic, technical and other kinds of networks in order to develop a unified theory of networks. Such a theory would then guide public and private decisions concerning the planning, operations and controlling of all kinds of networks. The contributions in this book represent the first steps toward this ambitious goal.

This workshop follows three very successful workshops held in Ziirich (1989), Palo Alto (1990) and Stockholm (1993) respectively. We received a large number of papers in response to our call for contributions. This year, forty papers were received of which sixteen were presented as full papers and four were presented as poster papers. Although we received many excellent papers the program committee decided to keep the number of full presentations low in order to accommodate more discussion in keeping with the format of a workshop. Many people have contributed to the success of this workshop including the members of the program committee who, with the additional reviewers, helped make the selection of the papers. We are thankful to all the authors of the papers that were submitted. We also thank several organizations which have contributed financially to this workshop, specially NSERC, ASI, CICSR, UBC, MPR Teltech and Newbridge Networks.
