Book excerpt: The investigation of the origin and formation of microstructures and the effect that microstructure has on the properties of materials are important issues in materials science and technology. Geometrical analysis is often the key to understanding the formation of microstructures and the resulting material properties. The authors make use of mathematical morphology, spatial statistics, image processing, stereology and stochastic geometry to analyze microstructures arising in materials science. * Quantitative microstructure analysis is one of the most successful experimental techniques in materials science * Uses examples to demonstrate the techniques * Program code included enables the reader to apply the numerous algorithms * Accessible to material scientists with limited statistical knowledge Primarily aimed at applied materials scientists, the book will also appeal to those working and researching in earth sciences, material technology, mineralogy, petrography, image analysis, cytology and biology.

Book excerpt: As the shift from the Metal Age progresses, materials engineers and materials scientists seek new analytical and design methods to create stronger and more reliable materials. Based on extensive research and developmental work done at the author’s multi-disciplinary material laboratory, this graduate-level and professional reference addresses the relationship between fracture mechanisms (macroscale) and the microscopic, with the goal of explaining macroscopic fracture behavior based on a microscopic fracture mechanism. A careful fusion of mechanics and materials science, this text and monograph systematically considers an array of materials, from metals through ceramics and polymers, and demonstrates lab-tested strategies to develop desirable high-temperature materials for technological applications.

Book excerpt: This volume contains 132 selected papers presented at the Symposium which will be held on November 22-25, 1983 in Beijing and is the first of international symposia on fracture mechanics held in China. In this volume one may find the contributions of many internationally well known scientists and engineers is the field of fracture mechanics. Among the 132 papers from 12 countries and regions, 16 are invited lectures which were specially chosen to cover major trends in fracture mechanics and were prepared by specialists actively engaged on the respective subjects. All papers are grouped under the 6 headings, that is, 1. Elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics; 2. Applications of fracture mechanics; 3. Test methods; 4. Fatigue; 5. Fracture models and micro-mechanisms and 6. Fracture of non-metals. 70 papers are from Chinese contributors. It is the first time that Chinese scientists and engineers working on this field presented their studies to the outside world in such a large number and wide range of topics. Anyone interested in fracture mechanics may find in this volume the recent advances in this field. Anyone interested in the development in China may find in this volume the state of the art of fracture mechanics studies in China. This proceedings may serve also as a reference book for engineers, applied mathematicians, metallurgists, physicists and other scientists, as well as graduate students and undergraduate students. There are approximately 1,100 pages.

It discusses the types of cast iron and the general purpose of cast irons. It also presents the history of the iron founding industry. Some of the topics covered in the book are the description of liquid metal state; preparation of liquid metal; process of melting; description of cupola melting and electric melting methods; control of composition of liquid metal during preparation; description of primary cast iron solidification structures; and thermal analysis of metals to determine its quality. Solidification science and the fundamentals of heat treatment are also discussed. An in-depth analysis of the hot quenching techniques is provided. The graphitization potential of liquid iron is well presented. A chapter is devoted to microstructural features of cast iron. The book can provide useful information to iron smiths, welders, students, and researchers.

Scott provides a detailed introduction to the structure and morphology of ancient and historic metallic materials. Much of the scientific research on this important topic has been inaccessible, scattered throughout the international literature, or unpublished; this volume, although not exhaustive in its coverage, fills an important need by assembling much of this information in a single source. Jointly published by the GCI and the J. Paul Getty Museum, the book deals with many practical matters relating to the mounting, preparation, etching, polishing, and microscopy of metallic samples and includes an account of the way in which phase diagrams can be used to assist in structural interpretation. The text is supplemented by an extensive number of microstructural studies carried out in the laboratory on ancient and historic metals. The student beginning the study of metallic materials and the conservation scientist who wishes to carry out structural studies of metallic objects of art will find this publication quite useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the hysteresis and damping of, and damage to, composites. It analyzes the following areas: damage mechanisms affecting the hysteresis of composites, mechanical hysteresis of ceramic-matrix composites, hysteresis behavior of fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs), relationship between the internal damage and hysteresis loops of CMCs, and mechanical hysteresis loops and the fiber/matrix interface frictional coefficient of SiC/CAS and C/SiC composites. A damping study on aluminum-multiwalled carbon nanotube-based nanocomposite materials is discussed to increase the damping property for applications like engine heads, pistons, cylinder blocks, and other aerospace components. The effect of ceramic/graphite addition to the dry sliding wear behavior of copper-based hybrid composites has been assessed at three different normal loads of 9.81, 19.62, and 29.34 N. The authors hope this book will help material scientists and engineering designers to understand and master the hysteresis of composites.
