Book excerpt: Chauncey de Leon Canfield (1843-1909) first published "The diary of a forty-niner" in 1906, and 1,200 of the 2,000 copies in that edition were burned. Joseph Gaer's Bibliography of California literature, 20 describes this book as written in the form of a diary, but fictional.' The diary of a forty-niner (1920) reprints Canfield's 1906 publication. It purports to be the diary of Alfred T. Jackson, of Litchfield County, Connecticut, during his days as a gold prospector, 1850-1852. Jackson offers firsthand accounts of Nevada City and neighboring Rock Creek; descriptions of Grass Valley, North and South Yuba Valleys, and the Sierra Mountains; details of gold mining with accounts of pioneer overland crossings, and foreign mineworkers (including Chinese). Entries concerning Jackson's personal life include details of his courtship of a French woman in the camps.

Book excerpt: The massive, multilayered city of Neopolis, built shortly after World War II, was designed as a home for the expanding population of science-heroes, heroines and villains that had ballooned into existence in the previous decade. In 1985 the city accepted jurisdiction by a police force covering many alternate Earths, headquartered on the world known as Grand Central. Our own outpost of this network, Precinct Ten (known affectionately as Top 10), recruits its members from Neopolis and its environs, working much like Earth's other police precincts, with one major exception: Like the citizens of the city, the officers of Top 10 have the abilities needed to deal with Neopolis's exotic denizens. Rookie cop Robyn Slinger, alter ego "Toybox," hits the streets for the first time along with a colorful crew of fellow officers, each having the required training to deal with science-villains and super-crimes, as well as the common misdemeanors of city life. You'll never look at powers, or police work, the same way again! From Alan Moore, the writer of WATCHMEN and V FOR VENDETTA, and artists Gene Ha (JUSTICE LEAGUE) and Zander Cannon (Transformers), the Eisner award-winning series TOP 10 is collected here in its entirety!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a serious book examining the original sounds and meanings of languages right back to the Stone Age - up until now believed to be impossible. But it can also be seen as tracing the overwhelming sexual orientation of human thinking for the last six hundred thousand years or more - when we were only hominids, squatting round the camp fires at the mouths of our caves - to keep the sabre toothed tigers out. It was here that our original bare bottomed language committees first got to grips with meanings and their audible representation. The committees were convened as a result of the taming of fire, the high tech of the day. It was a cosy environment in a cold and hostile world, and the unaccustomed warmth led to an outburst of amorous inclinations, and the need to express them in words. Ka they thought echoic of the strike of flint on flint, and so striking, and so the tenderising of raw meat for which they had already been making "e;hand axes"e; for at least half a million years. It is from ka-ka for tenderising with a hand axe that our cooking comes! The flame did it for you. Flint knapping left a lot of "e;debetage"e; or waste flakes, whence ka-ka also came to mean waste - including today human waste. Metaphor led to odd bedfellows. All this evidence is decoded from an exhaustive forty year research into over a hundred languages, many of them dead ones, where like flies in amber our original Lithic (Stone Age) language roots are still embedded. There is nothing salacious in the tale. It simply tells it as it is and was, and it is not going to go away. This short version is abstracted from a major work of over 600 pages, and there is nothing in it which the ordinary man in the street (and his sister) can not easily follow. It ranks quite highly in the order of useless information, but it has its indirect usage. If you understand how all our languages have actually come about - the product of human whimsy - you will be that much less likely to believe some of the sillier alternative views put forward by ideologically inclined placemen. Lastly, how has Lithic Language been cracked? The answer lies in "e;semantic triangulation"e;. Believe it or not, all our languages today (over 6000) bear traces of the original meanings given to the sounds as we first learned to articulate them, and it is possible to work backwards using the current meanings in numerous languages to home in on the original source meanings which are common to the current ones. Then we can see if they make sense as a first guess by our Stone Age (hominid) forebears of what they thought of as the "e;natural"e; meanings of the sounds. They didn't do thinking very much. That is how they all guessed the same, or nearly the same. So we are probably on the right track: language was all spun by human whimsy, (over a few hundred millennia), from only a baker's dozen original articulated sounds. The English language alone reached a million words last year.

This is the book that can tell you how to spell, pronounce, and define over 5,000 terms relative to the American West. Want to know what a “breachy” cow is? Describes some teenagers we know… Spend hours perusing the dictionary at random, or read straight through to give you a flavor of the West from its beginnings to contemporary days. Laced with photographs and maps, the Dictionary of the American West will make you sound like an expert on all things Western, even if you don’t know your dingus from a dinner plate. Compiled of words brought into English from Native Americans, emigrants, Mormons, Hispanics, migrant workers, loggers, and fur trappers, the dictionary opens up history and culture in an enchanting way. From “Aarigaa!” to “zopilote,” the Dictionary of the American West is a “valuable book, a treasure for any literate American’s library.” (Tony Hillerman)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel Gobat traces the untold story of the rise and fall of the first U.S. overseas empire to William Walker, a believer in the nation’s manifest destiny to spread its blessings not only westward but abroad as well. In the 1850s Walker and a small group of U.S. expansionists migrated to Nicaragua determined to forge a tropical “empire of liberty.” His quest to free Central American masses from allegedly despotic elites initially enjoyed strong local support from liberal Nicaraguans who hoped U.S.-style democracy and progress would spread across the land. As Walker’s group of “filibusters” proceeded to help Nicaraguans battle the ruling conservatives, their seizure of power electrified the U.S. public and attracted some 12,000 colonists, including moral reformers. But what began with promises of liberation devolved into a reign of terror. After two years, Walker was driven out. Nicaraguans’ initial embrace of Walker complicates assumptions about U.S. imperialism. Empire by Invitation refuses to place Walker among American slaveholders who sought to extend human bondage southward. Instead, Walker and his followers, most of whom were Northerners, must be understood as liberals and democracy promoters. Their ambition was to establish a democratic state by force. Much like their successors in liberal-internationalist and neoconservative foreign policy circles a century later in Washington, D.C., Walker and his fellow imperialists inspired a global anti-U.S. backlash. Fear of a “northern colossus” precipitated a hemispheric alliance against the United States and gave birth to the idea of Latin America.

Through a lens unique to her, she observes her surroundings with the quiet intensity that only a poet understands. In a second collection of poems, Ritzer reflects on diverse topics that include the familiarity and trust that comes with a lasting love, times of indecision or strife, the darker side of the human mind, two friends who drifted apart, the insights gathered from the blessing of growing old, the dawn that creeps in again after a long night, the lessons learned during a card game, and much more. Poetically Speaking is a volume of free verse that lyrically explores many subjects and emotions as a woman vividly reflects on her personal experiences, others around her, and life itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work results from years of studying God's Word and observation of the current trends in Christianity. The problem with Christianity today is that it has forgotten that the battle is not with those without, but with the foolishness, sin, and unbelief in the believer. The forty-nine truths contained herein appear to be the most neglected in this age. Considering that God's Word is not open to personal interpretation, each Scripture quotation is left to individual understanding through the visitation of the Holy Spirit. Although some explanation is given, my intent is to guide the reader toward understanding; and not to impose upon them my own understanding. It is perhaps ironic that many Christians professing Jesus to be their Lord and Master may spend eternity in a place they would not desire. God's Word states that a follower of Jesus that does not keep his sayings will not inherit the kingdom of heaven. The truths discussed herein are the sayings of Jesus, not mine. The Pentecost follows these forty-nine truths. It is a day that is in the future. It will be a happy day for many, but the road thereto is troubled with much tribulation.
