Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Flora of Western Middle California The first systematic treatise upon the plants of California was pre sented in the Botany of California, the first volume of which appeared in 1876, the second being published four years later. In these two volumes we have the first general account of the California ora. The work was based primarily upon a study of the plant collections of the California Geological Survey made by W. H. Brewer from 1860 to 1865 and later by H. N. Bolander, and also upon the rather considerable collections of the Pacific Railroad Surveys from 1851 to 1857. This material was supplemented by collections, some small, some considerable, made by resident collectors. The manuscript of the Polypetalae was produced by the combined labors of W. H. Brewer and Sereno Watson; the Gamopetalae were done by Asa Gray, while the second volume from the Apetalae to the Crypta gams was elaborated by Watson with the assistance of specialists in various groups. These ranges have been considered by some to be the southern continuation of the Sierra. Nevadas, while others speak of them as a part of the Coast Ranges, but that they belong to neither Of these becomes evident when it is remembered that they were formed in much later geo logical times and that they are separated both from the Sierras and the coast mountains by Soledad Pass, the highest point of which has an altitude of only 2678 feet. The most impor tant of these southern mountains is the San Bernardino Range which lies in a general east-and-west direction in the southwest ern part of San Bernardino County and culminates in Grayback Mountain at feet altitude. While it is essen tial that one doing critical work should laboriously search through scattered literature, the average student, and especially the novice, will find such a course impossible. In an endeavor to supply this need, the author has writ ten this book. Not that he feels that the flora is so well known that such a work will prove adequate for years to come, but rather to bring together what knowledge now exists concerning the systematic side of our most interest ing plant life. That many mistakes must unavoidably occur, and that many plants are yet to be added, is clearly apprehended. The exact area included in this volume is the coast slope of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This terri tory comprises a large portion of the great southern California valley, as well as the following mountain ranges, in each of which is named the culminating point: Sierra Santa Monica (castro Peak 3946 Sierra San Fernando (san Fernando Peak 3793 Sierra San Gabriel (mt. Gleason 6493 ft., San Gabriel Peak 6172 ft., Mt. San Antonio 10080 Sierra Santa Ana (santiago Peak 5675 ft). A number of the more conspicuous and common plants of southern California not known to occur within our boundaries are included, however, so that the student will find that a great majority of the plants to be met with on the coast slope south of Point Conception are described.
