Book excerpt: This study presents several extensions of the most familiar models for count data, the Poisson and negative binomial models. We develop an encompassing model for two well-known variants of the negative binomial model (the NB1 and NB2 forms). We then analyze some alternative approaches to the standard log gamma model for introducing heterogeneity into the loglinear conditional means for these models. The lognormal model provides a versatile alternative specification that is more flexible (and more natural) than the log gamma form, and provides a platform for several "two part" extensions, including zero inflation, hurdle, and sample selection models. (We briefly present some alternative approaches to modeling heterogeneity.) We also resolve some features in Hausman, Hall and Griliches (1984, Economic models for count data with an application to the patents-R & D relationship, Econometrica 52, 909-938) widely used panel data treatments for the Poisson and negative binomial models that appear to conflict with more familiar models of fixed and random effects. Finally, we consider a bivariate Poisson model that is also based on the lognormal heterogeneity model. Two recent applications have used this model. We suggest that the correlation estimated in their model frameworks is an ambiguous measure of the correlation of the variables of interest, and may substantially overstate it. We conclude with a detailed application of the proposed methods using the data employed in one of the two aforementioned bivariate Poisson studies

In the ZIP model, the Poisson mean and the mixing weight are often assumed to depend on covariates through regression technique. In other words, the effect of covariates on Poisson mean or the mixing weight is specified using a proper link function coupled with a linear predictor which is simply a linear combination of unknown regression coefficients and covariates. However, in practice, this predictor may not be linear in regression parameters but curvilinear or nonlinear. Under such situation, a more general and flexible approach should be considered. One popular method in the literature is Zero-Inflated Generalized Additive Models (ZIGAM) which extends the zero-inflated models to incorporate the use of Generalized Additive Models (GAM). These models can accommodate the nonlinear predictor in the link function. For ZIGAM, it is also of interest to conduct inferences for the mixing weight, particularly evaluating whether the mixing weight equals to zero. Many methodologies have been proposed to examine this question, but all of them are developed under classical zero-inflated models rather than ZIGAM. In this report, we propose a generalized score test to evaluate whether the mixing weight is equal to zero under the framework of ZIGAM with Poisson model. Technically, the proposed score test is developed based on a novel transformation for the mixing weight coupled with proportional constraints on ZIGAM, where it assumes that the smooth components of covariates in both the Poisson mean and the mixing weight have proportional relationships. An intensive simulation study indicates that the proposed score test outperforms the other existing tests when the mixing weight and the Poisson mean truly involve a nonlinear predictor. The recreational fisheries data from the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) survey conducted by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are used to illustrate the proposed methodology.

Book excerpt: This paper focuses on an extension of zero-inflated generalized Poisson (ZIGP) regression models for count data. We discuss generalized Poisson (GP) models where dispersion is modelled by an additional model parameter. Moreover, zero-inflated models in which overdispersion is assumed to be caused by an excessive number of zeros are discussed. In addition to ZIGP regression introduced by Famoye and Singh (2003), we now allow for regression on the overdispersion and zero-inflation parameters. Consequently, we propose tools for an exploratory data analysis on the dispersion and zero-inflation level. An application dealing with outsourcing of patent filing processes will be used to compare these nonnested models. The model parameters are fitted by maximum likelihood. Asymptotic normality of the ML estimates in this non-exponential setting is proven. Standard errors are estimated using the asymptotic normality of the estimates. Appropriate exploratory data analysis tools are developed. Also, a model comparison using AIC statistics and Vuong tests (see Vuong (1989)) is carried out. For the given data, our extended ZIGP regression model will prove to be superior over GP and ZIP models and even ZIGP models with constant overall dispersion and zero-inflation parameters demonstrating the usefulness of our proposed extensions. -- maximum likelihood estimator ; overdispersion ; patent outsourcing ; Vuong test ; zero-inflated generalized Poisson regression ; zero-inflation
