The first is to present a survey of the theoretical background of the dynamic interaction between a non-viscid, compressible fluid and an elastic structure is presented. Section one presents a short survey of the application of the finite element method (FEM) to the area of fluid-structure-interaction (FSI). Section two describes the mathematical foundation of the structure and fluid with special emphasis on the fluid. The main steps in establishing the finite element (FE) equations for the fluid structure coupling are discussed in section three. The second purpose is to demonstrate the application of MSC/NASTRAN to the solution of FSI problems. Some specific topics, such as fluid structure analogy, acoustic absorption, and acoustic contribution analysis are described in section four. Section five deals with the organization of the acoustic procedure flowchart. Section six includes the most important information that a user needs for applying the acoustic procedure to practical FSI problems. Beginning with some rules concerning the FE modeling of the coupled system, the NASTRAN USER DECKs for the different steps are described. The goal of section seven is to demonstrate the use of the acoustic procedure with some examples. This demonstration includes an analytic verification of selected FE results. The analytical description considers only some aspects of FSI and is not intended to be mathematically complete. Finally, section 8 presents an application of the acoustic procedure to vehicle interior acoustic analysis with selected results. Book excerpt: Fluid-Structure Interaction: An Introduction to FiniteElement Coupling fulfils the need for an introductive approachto the general concepts of Finite and Boundary Element Methods forFSI, from the mathematical formulation to the physicalinterpretation of numerical simulations. Based on theauthor’s experience in developing numerical codes forindustrial applications in shipbuilding and in teaching FSI to bothpracticing engineers and within academia, it provides acomprehensive and self–contained guide that is geared towardboth students and practitioners of mechanical engineering. Composedof six chapters, Fluid–Structure Interaction: An Introduction to FiniteElement Coupling progresses logically from formulations andapplications involving structure and fluid dynamics, fluid andstructure interactions and opens to reduced order-modelling forvibro-acoustic coupling. The author describes simple yetfundamental illustrative examples in detail, using analyticaland/or semi–analytical formulation & designed both toillustrate each numerical method and also to highlight a physicalaspect of FSI. All proposed examples are simple enough to becomputed by the reader using standard computational tools such asMATLAB, making the book a unique tool for self–learning andunderstanding the basics of the techniques for FSI, or can serve asverification and validation test cases of industrial FEM/BEM codesrendering the book valuable for code verification and validationpurposes.

Book excerpt: As Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Heat Transfer (CHT) evolve and become increasingly important in standard engineering design and analysis practice, users require a solid understanding of mechanics and numerical methods to make optimal use of available software. The Finite Element Method in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics, Third Edition illustrates what a user must know to ensure the optimal application of computational procedures—particularly the Finite Element Method (FEM)—to important problems associated with heat conduction, incompressible viscous flows, and convection heat transfer. This book follows the tradition of the bestselling previous editions, noted for their concise explanation and powerful presentation of useful methodology tailored for use in simulating CFD and CHT. The authors update research developments while retaining the previous editions’ key material and popular style in regard to text organization, equation numbering, references, and symbols. This updated third edition features new or extended coverage of: Coupled problems and parallel processing Mathematical preliminaries and low-speed compressible flows Mode superposition methods and a more detailed account of radiation solution methods Variational multi-scale methods (VMM) and least-squares finite element models (LSFEM) Application of the finite element method to non-isothermal flows Formulation of low-speed, compressible flows With its presentation of realistic, applied examples of FEM in thermal and fluid design analysis, this proven masterwork is an invaluable tool for mastering basic methodology, competently using existing simulation software, and developing simpler special-purpose computer codes. It remains one of the very best resources for understanding numerical methods used in the study of fluid mechanics and heat transfer phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibration of Periodic Structures introduces the fundamentals of the periodic structure theory. The book shows how knowledge of stop and pass bands can be utilized to develop a method for finding natural frequency distribution in a finite periodic structure. Basic concepts are then extended to wave propagation in infinitely long periodically supported beams and plates and the distribution of natural frequencies of a similar structure of finite length. The method is then extended to vibration of skin-stringer structures and the structural-acoustic properties of a section of an aircraft fuselage. This book is ideal for practicing engineers in various industries involved in the analysis of vibration of structures with periodic properties and prediction of supersonic flutter characteristics of said structures. Shows how the periodic structure theory can be combined with the finite element method to model a section of an airplane fuselage to study its structural-acoustic characteristics Features developing methods for predicting the dynamics of periodic structures in a cost-effective manner Guides the reader in predicting and reducing response of periodically stiffened structures to random excitations

Book excerpt: The numerical simulation of fluid mechanics and heat transfer problems is now a standard part of engineering practice. The widespread availability of capable computing hardware has led to an increased demand for computer simulations of products and processes during their engineering design and manufacturing phases. The range of fluid mechanics and heat transfer applications of finite element analysis has become quite remarkable, with complex, realistic simulations being carried out on a routine basis. The award-winning first edition of The Finite Element Method in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics brought this powerful methodology to those interested in applying it to the significant class of problems dealing with heat conduction, incompressible viscous flows, and convection heat transfer. The Second Edition of this bestselling text continues to provide the academic community and industry with up-to-date, authoritative information on the use of the finite element method in the study of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Extensively revised and thoroughly updated, new and expanded material includes discussions on difficult boundary conditions, contact and bulk nodes, change of phase, weighted-integral statements and weak forms, chemically reactive systems, stabilized methods, free surface problems, and much more. The Finite Element Method in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics offers students a pragmatic treatment that views numerical computation as a means to an end and does not dwell on theory or proof. Mastering its contents brings a firm understanding of the basic methodology, competence in using existing simulation software, and the ability to develop some simpler, special purpose computer codes.

Book excerpt: The Control Volume Finite Element Method (CVFEM) is a hybrid numerical method, combining the physics intuition of Control Volume Methods with the geometric flexibility of Finite Element Methods. The concept of this monograph is to introduce a common framework for the CVFEM solution so that it can be applied to both fluid flow and solid mechanics problems. To emphasize the essential ingredients, discussion focuses on the application to problems in two-dimensional domains which are discretized with linear-triangular meshes. This allows for a straightforward provision of the key information required to fully construct working CVFEM solutions of basic fluid flow and solid mechanics problems.
