The objective of this study is to evaluate the response of bone, fracture plate, screws and callus at different stages of healing to various applied loads. A three-dimensional, half-symmetric finite element model was developed. The stress and strain states in the assembly were investigated for pure compression, pure tension, twisting moment and combination of compressive and shear forces, which generate a bending moment, simulating getting up from a chair, carrying a suitcase and turning a screw driver. Two types of commonly used fracture plates were compared: 316 stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The results of this research showed that there is less stress shielding of the bone with the titanium alloy plate and screws than with the stainless steel ones. The maximum equivalent von-Mises stress was found to be less in compression and tension than in bending and twisting. The majority of load transfer within the assembly occurred in the screws. For large bending and twisting moments stresses can be higher than the strength of the stainless steel plate. Excessive loading should thus be avoided to prevent possible failure. The research further found that the relative motion between bone and fracture plate was largest during tensile loading.

Book excerpt: Digital models based on data from medical images have recently become widespread in the field of biomechanics. This book summarizes medical imaging techniques and processing procedures, both of which are necessary for creating bone models with finite element methods. Chapter 1 introduces the main principles and the application of the most commonly used medical imaging techniques. Chapter 2 describes the major methods and steps of medical image analysis and processing. Chapter 3 presents a brief review of recent studies on reconstructed finite element bone models, based on medical images. Finally, Chapter 4 reveals the digital results obtained for the main bone sites that have been targeted by finite element modeling in recent years.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Medicine - Biomedical Engineering, grade: 1.0, Technical University of Munich (LS Statik), course: Master of Science of Computational Mechanics, 94 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The process of adaptive bone remodeling can be described mathematically and simulated in a computer model, integrated with the finite element method. The main focus of this thesis is the implementation of a bone remodeling algorithm in MATLAB and ANSYS on the basis of FEM. The strain energy density is used as mechanical stimulus. The cortical and trabecular bone are described as continuous materials with variable density. This thesis can be divided into four main parts. The first part is due to the material properties of cortical and trabecular bone. The second part is about the remodeling theory and gives an historical review of the developed numerical approaches up to now. The implementation of the remodeling algorithm in ANSYS and MATLAB as well as its validation is topic of part three. In last main part, the algorithm is applied to a 2D FE-model of a human proximal femur.

Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive mechanobiological insights into bone, including the microstructure of cancellous bone and its realistic loading in the human body. This approach considers different types of loads, i.e. static and dynamic, and the response under uniaxial and multiaxial loading conditions. The book also reviews additional factors influencing biomechanical properties, e.g. fluid transport. In closing, the mechanobiological approach is discussed in the context of the finite element method.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis and ADINA contains the proceedings of the Fourth ADINA Conference held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on June 15-17, 1983. Separating the papers presented in the conference as chapters, this book first elucidates the use of ADINA for analysis of mines with explosive fills. Subsequent chapters explore the use of ADINA in soil mechanics; nonlinear shell analysis; analysis of bond between prestressed steel and concrete; determination and simulation of stable crack growth; offshore structures analysis; modeling of traveling-loads and time-dependent masses; and comparison of two slideline methods. Other notable applications of ADINA are also shown.

Book excerpt: Often bone fractures are joined by inserting metal plates and screws to hold the fragmented bone under compression. However, after the fractured bone is healed removing the screws leaves holes in the bone which takes months to fill up and heal completely. The goal of this research is to investigate those voids specifically in a finite element model of a femur. The holes were found to experience high stress that can easily lead to crack propagations during everyday activities. Finite element models of femurs were modeled after two common fracture fixation systems, specifically just after the plates, rods and screws are removed. To observe the stress levels bones are likely to experience, common mechanical tests that are relevant to or associated with common daily activities were performed. While the 3-point bending tests did not yield significant results, the compression and torsion tests produced high stress areas near the screw holes. In certain cases, the von Mises' stress reached 3.66 x 106 N/mm2. Our finite element modeling seeks to establish groundwork for future explorations on the holes created by fracture fixation hardware. In the future, this work will lead to redesigning of fixation systems with reduced stress concentration around the holes. Therefore, the initiation of new cracks around these holes will be limited during everyday activity.
