Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Stability Design of Steel Frames provides a summary of the behavior, analysis and design of structural steel members and frames with flexibly-jointed connections. The book presents the theory and design of structural stability and includes extensions of computer-based analyses for individual members in space with imperfections. It also shows how connection flexibility influences the behavior and design of steel frames and how designers must consider this in a limit-state analysis and design procedure. The clearly written text and extensive bibliography make this a practical book for advanced students, researchers and professionals in civil and structural engineering, as well as a useful supplement to traditional books on the theory and design of structural stability.

Book excerpt: Tubular Structures XVI contains the latest scientific and engineering developments in the field of tubular steel structures, as presented at the 16th International Symposium on Tubular Structures (ISTS16, Melbourne, Australia, 4-6 December 2017). The International Symposium on Tubular Structures (ISTS) has a long-standing reputation for being the principal showcase for manufactured tubing and the prime international forum for presentation and discussion of research, developments and applications in this field. Various key and emerging subjects in the field of hollow structural sections are covered, such as: special applications and case studies, static and fatigue behaviour of connections/joints, concrete-filled and composite tubular members and offshore structures, earthquake and dynamic resistance, specification and standard developments, material properties and section forming, stainless and high-strength steel structures, fire, impact and blast response. Research and development issues presented in this topical book are applicable to buildings, bridges, offshore structures, cranes, trusses and towers. Tubular Structures XVI is thus a pertinent reference source for architects, civil and mechanical engineers, designers, steel fabricators and contractors, manufacturers of hollow sections or related construction products, trade associations involved with tubing, owners or developers of tubular structures, steel specification committees, academics and research students all around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation, held in Cape Town in April 2001, this book contains the Proceedings, in two volumes. There are over 170 papers written by Authors from around 40 countries worldwide. The contributions include 6 Keynote Papers and 12 Special Invited Papers. In line with the aims of the SEMC 2001 International Conference, and as may be seen from the List of Contents, the papers cover a wide range of topics under a variety of themes. There is a healthy balance between papers of a theoretical nature, concerned with various aspects of structural mechanics and computational issues, and those of a more practical nature, addressing issues of design, safety and construction. As the contributions in these Proceedings show, new and more efficient methods of structural analysis and numerical computation are being explored all the time, while exciting structural materials such as glass have recently come onto the scene. Research interest in the repair and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure continues to grow, particularly in Europe and North America, while the challenges to protect human life and property against the effects of fire, earthquakes and other hazards are being addressed through the development of more appropriate design methods for buildings, bridges and other engineering structures.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive resource on the finite element method in structural steel connection design through verification with AISC 360 provisions Steel Connection Design by Inelastic Analysis covers the use of the finite element method in structural steel connection design. Verification with AISC 360 provisions is presented, focusing on the Component-Based Finite Element Method (CBFEM), a novel approach that provides the global behavior and verification of resistance for the design of structural steel connections. This method is essential for fast and practical design and evaluation of connections with different levels of geometry and complexity. Detailed modeling and verification examples with references to AISC and other relevant publications are included throughout the text, along with roughly 250 illustrations to aid in reader comprehension. Readers of this text will benefit from understanding at least the basics of structural design, ideally through civil, structural, or mechanical engineering programs of study. Written by a team of six highly qualified authors, Steel Connection Design by Inelastic Analysis includes information on: T-stub connections, single plate shear connections, bracket plate connections, beam over column connections, and end-plate moment connections Bolted wide flange splice connections, temporary splice connections, and chevron brace connection in a braced frame Brace connections at beam-column connection in a braced frame and double angle simple beam-to-column connections Semi-rigid beam-to-column connections, covering code design calculations and comparisons, IDEA StatiCa analysis, and ABAQUS analysis Steel Connection Design by Inelastic Analysis is an authoritative reference on the subject for structural engineers, Engineers of Record (EORs), fabrications specialists, and connection designers involved in the structural design of steel connections in the United States or any territory using AISC 360 as the primary design code.

Book excerpt: Thin-plated structures are used extensively in building construction, automobile, aircraft, shipbuilding and other industries because of a number of favourable factors such as high strength-weight ratio, development of new materials and processes and the availability of efficient analytical methods. This class of structure is made by joining thin plates together at their edges and they rely for their rigidity and strength upon the tremendous stiffness and load-carrying capacity of the flat plates from which they are made. Many of the problems encountered in these structures arise because of the effects of local buckling. The knowledge of various facets of this phenomenon has increased dramatically since the 1960s. Problem areas which were hitherto either too complex for rigorous analysis or whose subtleties were not fully realized have in these years been subjected to intensive study. Great advances have been made in the areas of inelastic buckling. The growth in use of lightweight strong materials, such as fibre-reinforced plastics has also been a contributory factor towards the need for advances in the knowledge of the far post-buckling range. The conference is a sequel to the international conference organised by the University of Strathclyde in December 1996 and this international gathering will provide the opportunity for discussion of recent developments and trends in design of thin-walled structures.
