Book excerpt: This monograph is intended as a concise and self-contained guide to practitioners and graduate students for applying approaches in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to real-world problems that require a quantification of viscous incompressible flows. In various projects related to NASA missions, the authors have gained CFD expertise over many years by developing and utilizing tools especially related to viscous incompressible flows. They are looking at CFD from an engineering perspective, which is especially useful when working on real-world applications. From that point of view, CFD requires two major elements, namely methods/algorithm and engineering/physical modeling. As for the methods, CFD research has been performed with great successes. In terms of modeling/simulation, mission applications require a deeper understanding of CFD and flow physics, which has only been debated in technical conferences and to a limited scope. This monograph fills the gap by offering in-depth examples for students and engineers to get useful information on CFD for their activities. The procedural details are given with respect to particular tasks from the authors’ field of research, for example simulations of liquid propellant rocket engine subsystems, turbo-pumps and the blood circulations in the human brain as well as the design of artificial heart devices. However, those examples serve as illustrations of computational and physical challenges relevant to many other fields. Unlike other books on incompressible flow simulations, no abstract mathematics are used in this book. Assuming some basic CFD knowledge, readers can easily transfer the insights gained from specific CFD applications in engineering to their area of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow is started suddenly with a constant velocity and is parallel with the plate. This simple flow configuration is used to compare the accuracy and the speed of various numerical methods and to examine the effect of the far field boundary conditions and the variable mesh size on the flow. The governing Navier-Stokes equations are expressed in terms of vorticity and stream function. The (parabolic) vorticity equation is approximated by two finite difference methods. The (elliptic) stream function equation is approximated by two relaxation schemes. The details of the flow field around the flat plate are computed for Reynolds number equal to 4 and 993. One of the interesting results is that the velocity at the outer edge of the boundary layer exceeds that of the free stream and the maximum velocity overshoot is 9.5% at Re = 4 and 5.4% at Re - 993. The implicit alternating direction method is two to three times faster than the explicit method. (Author).

Book excerpt: The GAMM-Commi ttee for Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics (GAMM-Fachausschuss für Numerische Methoden in der Strömungsmechanik) has sponsored the organization of a GAMM Workshop dedicated to the numerical simulation of three dimensional incompressible unsteady viscous laminar flows to test Navier-Stokes solvers. The Workshop was held in Paris from June 12th to June 14th, 1991 at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts et Metiers. Two test problems were set up. The first one is the flow in a driven-lid parallelepipedic cavity at Re = 3200 . The second problem is a flow around a prolate spheroid at incidence. These problems are challenging as fully transient solutions are expected to show up. The difficulties for meaningful calculations come from both space and temporal discretizations which have to be sufficiently accurate to resol ve detailed structures like Taylor-Görtler-like vortices and the appropriate time development. Several research teams from academia and industry tackled the tests using different formulations (veloci ty-pressure, vortici ty velocity), different numerical methods (finite differences, finite volumes, finite elements), various solution algorithms (splitting, coupled ...), various solvers (direct, iterative, semi-iterative) with preconditioners or other numerical speed-up procedures. The results show some scatter and achieve different levels of efficiency. The Workshop was attended by about 25 scientists and drove much interaction between the participants. The contributions in these proceedings are presented in alphabetical order according to the first author, first for the cavi ty problem and then for the prolate spheroid problem. No definite conclusions about benchmark solutions can be drawn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite Element Methods for Viscous Incompressible Flows examines mathematical aspects of finite element methods for the approximate solution of incompressible flow problems. The principal goal is to present some of the important mathematical results that are relevant to practical computations. In so doing, useful algorithms are also discussed. Although rigorous results are stated, no detailed proofs are supplied; rather, the intention is to present these results so that they can serve as a guide for the selection and, in certain respects, the implementation of algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical technique of overrelaxation is used here to speed the convergence of a numerical method for solving viscous, incompressible fluid flow problems. The method, called MAC, involves approximating the complete two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with analogous finite-difference equations. The MAC method was developed by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory of the University of California and is described in detail in "The MAC Method," by J. Eddie Welch, Francis H. Harlow, John P. Shannon, and Bart J. Daly (LA-3425). The most time-consuming part of this method involves iterating on a finite-difference form of Poisson's equation; hence overrelaxation is applied to this iteration process. Overrelaxation theory is presented and is applied to the above method to show that overrelaxation does speed convergence, Examples of fluid problem solutions are presented both with and without the use of overrelaxation, showing the amount of computer time saved. In addition, computer plots of several typical solutions are included to show the diversity of the above method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about spectral methods for partial differential equations: when to use them, how to implement them, and what can be learned from their of spectral methods has evolved rigorous theory. The computational side vigorously since the early 1970s, especially in computationally intensive of the more spectacular applications are applications in fluid dynamics. Some of the power of these discussed here, first in general terms as examples of the methods have been methods and later in great detail after the specifics covered. This book pays special attention to those algorithmic details which are essential to successful implementation of spectral methods. The focus is on algorithms for fluid dynamical problems in transition, turbulence, and aero dynamics. This book does not address specific applications in meteorology, partly because of the lack of experience of the authors in this field and partly because of the coverage provided by Haltiner and Williams (1980). The success of spectral methods in practical computations has led to an increasing interest in their theoretical aspects, especially since the mid-1970s. Although the theory does not yet cover the complete spectrum of applications, the analytical techniques which have been developed in recent years have facilitated the examination of an increasing number of problems of practical interest. In this book we present a unified theory of the mathematical analysis of spectral methods and apply it to many of the algorithms in current use.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general method of numerical calculation of compressible flows is outlined in which such flows are divided into irrotational and solenoidal parts. The general equations are reduced to the Boussinesq approximation for consideration of the B©Øenard problem. The B©Øenard problem, both in method of solution and result, is used to analyse a number of crucial aspects of finite difference calculation. In particular, the nonlinear formulations in current use are developed and related in a systematic way; and, in addition, some higher order methods are derived. Examples of the time-dependent behavior of the thermal convection problem are examined for physical interpretation in terms of gross property measurements and character of instantaneous solutions with the hope that the experience so gained will be valuable to extensions of the numerical method to more general problems.
