Book excerpt: James Dodson always felt closest to his father while they were on the links. So it seemed only appropriate when his father learned he had two months to live that they would set off on the golf journey of their dreams to play the most famous courses in the world. Final Rounds takes us to the historic courses of Royal Lytham and Royal Birkdale, to the windswept undulations of Carnoustie, where Hogan played peerlessly in '53, and the legendary St. Andrews, whose hallowed course reveals something of the eternal secret of the game's mysterious allure over pros and hackers alike. Throughout their poignant journey, the Dodsons humorously reminisce and reaffirm their love for each other, as the younger Dodson finds out what it means to have his father also be his best friend. Final Rounds is a book never to be forgotten, a book about fathers and sons, long-held secrets, and the lessons a middle-aged man can still learn from his dad about life, love, and family. Final Rounds is a tribute to a very special game and the fathers and sons who make it so.

Here are literary classics by such golf-loving writers as P. G. Wodehouse, Ring Lardner, and John Updike, mixed with surprises like an appearance by Ian Fleming’s James Bond and a little crime on the links from mystery master Ian Rankin. Humorists and sportswriters ranging from E. C. Bentley to Dan Jenkins and Rick Reilly weigh in as well, alongside a tale of romance on the greens from F. Scott Fitzgerald, a little-known gem by famous golf architect A. W. Tillinghast, and a story by Rex Lardner (Ring’s nephew) that just may be the single funniest thing ever written about golf. The resulting anthology is as enticing, provocative, and entertaining as the game of golf itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most golfers approach the tee with a complex mental package: worries and judgments about their swing, the other person's swing, the course, the weather, looking good, looking bad. They think about what's wrong instead of what's possible, and this is what Extraordinary Golf teaches: the art of the possible. Drawing on his experience teaching both amateurs and professionals for more than fifteen years, in his clinics around the country, in his Golf in the Kingdom seminars at the Esalen Institute, and at his own School for Extraordinary Golf in California, Shoemaker shows how extraordinary golf can be coached, learned, and practiced, with results not only in people's scores but in their sheer pleasure in the game. Combining a host of practical exercises with an entirely new point of view, he demonstrates how to focus not on the voices in your head but on the reality of golf: the club, the ball, your body, the course - the elements that actually make up your game. He shows how to approach shots creatively, instead of mechanically; how to read greens simply by staying awake; how to develop a powerful and consistent swing by rediscovering trust for your instincts; and how to improve yourself in competition by determining what you're competing for. He also gives simple guidelines on how to coach yourself, your spouse, and your children successfully.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvey Penick's life in golf began when he started caddying at the Austin, (Texas), Country Club at age eight. Eighty-one years later he is still there, still dispensing wisdom to pros and beginners alike. His stature in the golf world is reflected in the remarkable array of champions he's worked with, both men and women, including U.S. Open champion and golf's leading money winner Tom Kite, Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, and LPGA Hall of Famers Mickey Wright, Betsy Rawls, and Kathy Whitworth. It is not for nothing that the Teacher of the Year Award given by the Golf Teachers Association is called the Harvey Penick Award. Now, after sixty years of keeping notes on the things he's seen and learned and on the golfing greats he's taught, Penick is finally letting his Little Red Book (named for the red notebook he's always kept) be seen by the golf world. His simple, direct, practical wisdom pares away all the hypertechnical jargon that's grown up around the golf swing, and lets all golfers, whatever their level, play their best. He avoids negative words; when Tom Kite asked him if he should "choke down" on the club for a particular shot, Harvey told him to "grip down" instead, to keep the word "choke" from entering his mind. He advises golfers to have dinner with people who are good putters; their confidence may rub off, and it's certainly better than listening to bad putters complain. And he shows why, if you've got a bad grip, the last thing you want is a good swing. Throughout, Penick's love of golf and, more importantly, his love of teaching shine through. He gets as much pleasure from watching a beginner get the ball in the air for the first time as he does when one of his students wins the U.S. Open. Harvey Penick's Little Red Book is an instant classic, a book to rank with Ben Hogan's Modern Fundamentals of Golf and Tommy Armour's How to Play Your Best Golf All the Time.

It has been said by many that it is a microcosm of life itself—a beautiful game which tests the mind, body, and spirit. As a testament to that, there has been no shortage of inspired writing on the topic, as golf has long caught the interest and imagination of some of the world’s finest and most celebrated writers. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Reilly pokes more holes in Trump's claims than there are sand traps on all of his courses combined. It is by turns amusing and alarming."-- The New Yorker "Golf is the spine of this shocking, wildly humorous book, but humanity is its flesh and spirit." -- Chicago Sun-Times "Every one of Trump's most disgusting qualities surfaces in golf." -- The Ringer An outrageous indictment of Donald Trump's appalling behavior when it comes to golf -- on and off the green -- and what it reveals about his character. Donald Trump loves golf. He loves to play it, buy it, build it, and operate it. He owns 14 courses around the world and runs another five, all of which he insists are the best on the planet. He also claims he's a 3 handicap, almost never loses, and has won an astonishing 18 club championships. How much of all that is true? Almost none of it, acclaimed sportswriter Rick Reilly reveals in this unsparing look at Trump in the world of golf. Based on Reilly's own experiences with Trump as well as interviews with over 100 golf pros, amateurs, developers, and caddies, Commander in Cheat is a startling and at times hilarious indictment of Trump and his golf game. You'll learn how Trump cheats (sometimes with the help of his caddies and Secret Service agents), lies about his scores (the "Trump Bump"), tells whoppers about the rank of his courses and their worth (declaring that every one of them is worth $50 million), and tramples the etiquette of the game (driving on greens doesn't help). Trump doesn't brag so much, though, about the golf contractors he stiffs, the course neighbors he intimidates, or the way his golf decisions wind up infecting his political ones. For Trump, it's always about winning. To do it, he uses the tricks he picked up from the hustlers at the public course where he learned the game as a college kid, and then polished as one of the most bombastic businessmen of our time. As Reilly writes, "Golf is like bicycle shorts. It reveals a lot about a man." Commander in Cheat "paints a side-splitting portrait of a congenital cheater" (Esquire), revealing all kinds of unsightly truths Trump has been hiding.

Book excerpt: One of the funniest, most beloved, and most often quoted entertainers in the world tells his tale of Life and Golf--and of somehow surviving both. With his brilliant creation, groundskeeper Carl Spackler, and the outrageous success of the film Caddyshack firmly etched into the American consciousness, Bill Murray and golf have become synonymous. Filled with Murray's trademark deadpan and dead-on humor, Cinderella Story chronicles his love affair with golf from the life lessons he learned as a caddy--"how to smoke, curse, play cards. But more important, when to"--to his escapades on the Pro-Am golf circuit at the Augusta National and as a fan at the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the Western Open. An up-by-the-bootstraps tale of a man, his muse, and our society's fascination with a little white ball, Cinderella Story is one pilgrim's bemused path through the doglegs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contested the second weekend in April each year since 1934, the Masters is the world’s most prestigious golf tournament and most-watched tournament on television. Tickets are in such demand that even the waiting list is closed, and players value the title above all others. In Making the Masters, award-winning golf writer David Barrett focuses his attention on how the Masters was conceived, how it got off the ground in 1934, and how it fully established itself in 1935. The key figure in the tournament’s creation and success was Bobby Jones, who was a living legend after winning the Grand Slam in 1930 and immediately retiring at the age of twenty-eight. He went on to found Augusta National and sought a high-profile tournament for his new course. But nearly as important was Clifford Roberts, a banker friend of Jones who not only embraced Jones’s vision but became his right-hand man in working to bring that vision to reality. Barrett explores how Jones and Roberts built the Masters from scratch, creating a golf institution embellished by the often surprising details of what that entailed as they were trying to establish a golf club and golf tournament in tough economic times. It also vividly chronicles the events of the 1934 and 1935 Masters, with Gene Sarazen’s spectacular victory in 1935 providing the climax. Set against the backdrop of golf, and America, in the 1930s, the book provides an informative and entertaining read for fans of the Masters and students of golf history.

This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Stories from the Long Links is a collection of 25]1 golf related tales for those that love golf but can't always play. Some stories are inspired by real life events, daily activities, and golf endeavors while other stories are extremely outlandish, funny, scary, motivational, surprising, and unusual; but all are enjoyable to any golfer. Chapter 1 sample The Early Bird AFTER DINNER, while at the club, Rodger overheard a couple of members arguing about tee times. "I much prefer the late afternoon to tee off," one club member said. "The day is starting to wind down and it makes for a more relaxed round. And if your golf is timed properly, you can finish at the precise moment that dinner is set." "I'm sorry to disagree, but you have it all wrong," another member stated. "The absolute best time to tee off is first thing in the morning. I don't mean to say you should be one of the first couple of groups to tee off but, rather, I mean be the first person to play, before the course has been touched by a single soul. There is an energy in the air. Some in the Far East say it has to do with solar flares or something cosmic as the Earth itself begins to wake up. Codswallop, if you ask me, but there is a difference in attitude while playing that early in the day." "Yes, I agree. It's called lack of sleep," the first responded. "To look out over the many fairways, still wet from the morning dew without a single footprint on them is something beautiful to observe. I've also found that it improves my game!" At that last comment Rodger perked up. He was always looking for ways to decrease his handicap and had been unable to move it more than a fraction of a stroke in a very long time. "You're joking," the first member said to the second. "I am not. The last time I played first for the day I hit more fairways and made more putts. It was as if I couldn't miss, like my ball was a groundhog running from its shadow to his den, which was in the bottom of the cup." At this point, Rodger could be seen staring at a nearby plant, with his glass halfway to his lips, motionless for the longest time. Had someone paid any attention to him, they surely would have thought him to have had a stroke. "But I like my evening rounds, and the mornings come too early for me. With that, I will gladly give up a few strokes for a good night's sleep," the first said as both chuckled and moved towards the parlor. Still in a catatonic state, Rodger began to calculate how he could start his rounds earlier. This idea was all he could think about throughout the night. The next day, Rodger rang the pro shop at a second past opening. "Good morning. Can I arrange a tee time for you?" the voice on the phone asked. "Yes," said Rodger. "What is your earliest availability tomorrow morning?" "Our first opening is nine forty-five." "That won't do at all. How about the next day?" "We have a nine o'clock opening." "That's still too late. What is the earliest time you allow someone to tee off?" "That would be eight o'clock, sir." "When do you have an eight o'clock tee time vacant?" "Next Thursday." "I'll take it," Rodger stated and hung up the phone. For over a week, Rodger dreamed of that early morning round and of dropping a stroke, maybe three, from his total. Finally, the day came. He checked in at the clubhouse with haste and hurried off, driver in hand. Upon arrival at the first tee, anticipating that glorious untouched Eden, he stopped on the first tee box and surveyed the fairway. Footprints were seen all around the teeing area and down the fairway. Barely visible were trails on the putting green. "Drat," Rodger said. "Some scoundrel played earlier. Well, I may as well golf some as I'm here." And so he did. Playing in a foul mood, he scored one over his handicap. "Absurd," he said to himself after adding his scorecard on the 18th. (continued)
