The semi-submersible Sedco 706 drilling platform on the Grand Banks was selected for the trials. It has four radar systems on board, two X-band and two S-band, plus low-noise receivers for increased sensitivity. During the data collection phase, recordings of radar video signals were made for various icebergs, ships, and drilling rigs. Raw video signals from each radar were digitized sequentially and stored on tape for subsequent analysis. Data collected have proven useful in identifying the effect of critical environmental conditions such as ducting and subrefraction, as well as providing valuable information on sea clutter.

The data collected is able to provide information on icebergs in sea clutter, emphasizing small icebergs, and to demonstrate the advantages of signal processing to maximize detection capability. The data have been used to validate a radar model that can predict radar performance under a variety of operational and environmental conditions by modifying the input parameters.

Three of the systems were real-aperture side-looking radar and two were synthetic aperture radar. Previous research in radar detection of icebergs is first reviewed. Section II details the experiment planning and the data collection and reporting methods used. Section III analyzes and interprets the data collected. Estimates are given for average detectability of icebergs of various sizes, both in significant wave heights below 2.9 metres and with comparison to available surface and aerial photographic information. Factors affecting detectability are discussed.

This paper describes an algorithm used to extract the nondirectional wave-height spectrum from the backscatter return of a stationary ship- or rig-mounted radar employing an omnidirectional antenna for both transmission and reception. To test the effectiveness of the algorithm, its estimates are compared to those of a WAVE-TRACK buoy using data collected onboard CFAV Quest during 1988.
