Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Duck Looking for Hunters" is Capt Dale Amend's first person true experience story as a Bird Dog FAC in Vietnam in 1965-66. The Forward Air Controller (FAC) flew alone in an unarmed airplane about as heavy as a Toyota Corolla and traveled about as fast, 75 knots. The FAC directed all air strikes in South Vietnam. He frequently operated just over the treetops. The losses of airplanes and pilots were large. Bird Dog FACs had a high profile job, full of drama and danger. The central theme of the book is the FAC business of controlling air strikes, but the scope of the book is broad. It includes Green Berets, bets over catching rats, Christian missionaries --- the Real Warriors, black market and prostitution, the ineptness of the Vietnamese military, the Worst Officer, the Best FAC, Christmas and Easter music recorded and sent back home, heroes and traitors, culture of the native Montagnards, happy homecoming and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although his typewriter has been silent for nearly fifty years, Gordon MacQuarrie’s words continue to inspire generations of hunting and fishing enthusiasts. Through his “Stories of the Old Duck Hunters,” most of which are still in print, MacQuarrie captured the intangible, emotional qualities of the outdoor life in a way that made him unique among his peers. As a result, his audience and his legend continue to grow. Gordon MacQuarrie: The Story of an Old Duck Hunter is the first full-length biography of this literary legend. It explores the relationships he nurtured and treasured; records his coming of age during Theodore Roosevelt’s Conservation Movement; documents his rise to national prominence as the first full-time, professional outdoor writer in America; and follows his life as journalist, storyteller, husband, father, outdoorsman, and conservationist. Complete with rarely seen photographs and a comprehensive timeline of his writings, this book is a fitting companion to MacQuarrie’s own Stories of the Old Duck Hunters anthologies.

Book excerpt: "I adore Duck and Tiny Horse. Funny, silly and totally original." - Josh Widdicombe Spaghetti Hunters is a brilliantly funny and wonderfully silly picture book, featuring a duck, a tiny horse and quest for spaghetti, from the award-winning Morag Hood – creator of The Steves, I Am Bat. Duck has lost his spaghetti, and Tiny Horse has a plan to save the day. But what exactly do you bring to a Spaghetti Hunt? A spade, a fishing rod, a jar of peanut butter, cutlery and some binoculars, obviously. Searching far and wide, Tiny Horse catches worms, a ball of string, even a snake – but no spaghetti. Disaster! Until Duck consults a recipe book and armed with flour, eggs and a pasta maker, sets about making his own spaghetti. This infectiously comic story encourages reading and home-cooking, teaching children about where food really comes from.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duck hunting has changed greatly since the days of unlimited duck kills, as the limit of fifty ducks a day established in 1902 has fallen to the present three. A legitimate hunter now, Dale Hamm learned the art of market hunting—taking waterfowl out of season and selling them to restaurants—from his father during the l920s. During the l930s and l940s, he kept his family alive by market hunting. At the peak of his career, Hamm poached every private hunting club along the Illinois River from Havana to Beardstown. After market hunting died out, Hamm became a legendary and almost respected—albeit controversial—character on the Illinois backwaters. He was eventually invited to hunt on the same clubs from which he had once been chased at the point of a shotgun. He hunted with judges, sheriffs, and the head of undercover operations for the Illinois Department of Conservation, all of whom knew of his reputation. He passed on to these hunting partners a lifetime of outdoor knowledge gained from slogging through mud, falling through ice, hunting ducks at three o’clock in the morning, dodging game wardens, and running the world’s only floating tavern. "I always said if anyone ever cut open one of us Hamms, all they’d find was duck or fish," Hamm once said of his family. Now in his eighties, Hamm still carries a pellet from a shotgun in his chin to remind him of a shotgun blast that ricocheted off the water and into his face. Bakke notes that it is appropriate that a man who spent his life with a shotgun in his hands should carry a bit of buckshot wherever he goes. Everyone who ever met Dale Hamm has a story about him. His own story is that of a one-of-a-kind character who, in his later years, used his considerable outdoor savvy to conserve the natural resources he once savaged. "His time and kind are gone," Bakke notes, "and there will never be another like him." This book will be of interest to anyone who has ever been hunting—or who enjoys reading about colorful people and times that exist no more.

Book excerpt: It's a book about duck hunting, first and foremost, that spans three flyways, and takes you into the blind with everyday, working stiff waterfowlers who like it best when its cold, wet, and muddy. Hunts run the gamut of North American duck country-coastal marsh, flooded timber, rice fields, high lonesome prairie, and sprawling mountain valleys flanked by snowcapped peaks. Many hunts on public land accessible to all. There are hunts on private land in duck clubs that for many are a staple of the waterfowling tradition. From my late teens into my fortissimo, the stories herein tel the tale of American duck hunters who purché this passion in their own inique way. If you're a duck hunter, you've been there, done this, and know what its all about. Duck hunters everywhere are unique for the absurd lengths they will go to be where the duck are. The theme runs through this collection of short stories. There are tales of youthful folly, exploration, family, old friends, new friends, good dogs, wild ducks, wild country, muddy water, and wide horizons. No matter where one goes, the drama of the hunt often plays out the same transcending regional differences while capturing the nuances of culture in a pursuit that has long defined the history of hunting in North America.
